Hi Guys

Myself and a work mate will travel to Hershey today from Philadelphia. The AACA is on the list, is there any other great places to see or people to meet?

Many thanks and kind regards
Ockert van der berg

Ockert,

Don't know if they would be open to it...but you could try calling on Swalm's as you pass by. They are 45 min from Hershey,, but along the way (sort of) from Philadelphia.

Swalm's is one of the top tier engine rebuilders for T's and A's, my last understanding is they are sold out for a year or so, and their work is always fantastic. They are also in Pennsylvania Dutch country where its a bit of a fun drive (A people that shun modern things and still use horses for motive power)

Ora and his wife are great friendly people...might be worth a try just to see his shop and methods since you come from afar.

I'm sorry I couldn't help you/catch up with you on your current visit. I still work during days...the T's are put away on skates and under cover for the winter in a dark garage come evenings. You witnessed our Philadelphia area winter last night, yes?

Should you go thru Strasburg, there is also the Pennsylvania Rail Road museum. Not the state, the company! The Pennsylvania system was at one time the largest railroad in the USA.

Also a great ice cream place in Strasburg itself.

I strongly recommend the Udvar-Hazy Center, which is part of the Smithsonian museums. It is near the Dulles airport. The collection is all under one roof and includes the Discovery space shuttle, Enola Gay, SR-71, Concorde amongst many, many other planes, helicopters, engines, rockets, etc. It can’t be missed.

Any of the Smithsonian museums, obviously, though be aware that as a whole their collection of cars isn't extremely impressive. Air & Space is great. Out at Dulles Airport Udvar Hazy is outstanding for its size and the large craft housed there. The National Building Museum is off the beaten path near Judicial Square, but is impressive just for the building it is in and often has changing exhibits on architecture. The Bureau of Printing and Engraving is unfortunately closed on weekends this time of year. Lincoln history buffs will want to see Ford's Theater and the small museums associates with it. You won't be able to do enough. Enjoy!

When we are on vacation , I am all ways looking for unique and good places to eat .A great restaurant in Washington is actually across the river in Alexandria . IT was ( so they say ) George Washington's favorite place to eat . The name is Gadsbys Tavern 708 N Royal St .PH 703 548 1288 . You my need reservation , but it is worth the trouble . The place is much as it was in Washington's day . the menu is the same as it was as will . I had George's favorite meal roast duck .The staff are in period costume .Good lock . Near by are Mount Vernon , Williamsburg and The cradle of America Jamestown .
