I posted last week in the classified section that today was my DMV appointment for licensing my 16 coupelet. So I got early prepped Isabel and took off forty five minutes early just in case I had issues. DMV is six miles east of me. Made it to the DMV with no issues parked Isabel and proudly walked in with my paperwork.

I walked up to the DMV attendant and she said "Name please for your appointment?" I told her my name and she says "Sorry sir, I don't see you on the list, do you have your confirmation number?" I said no, she double checked again.

I said thank you ma'm have a great day and walked out dejected. Came home and checked the DMV appt. system and nothing found.

At least I got to drive Isabel for twelve miles with no issues. I guess I didn't press the confirm button after I picked my time :-(.

New appt. made with a confirmation email for next week.

Philip, let me guess, and you were the only person in there? The Social Security Office I went to, they would not see me until I took a number. I was the only person in there.

If you have any more problems, (no VIN number) Get in touch with Martyn Vowell. He knows a place.

At least they rejected you and not your paperwork. Better luck next time. Keep us posted.

I had that exact same thing happen at the SS office. Only one there and they made me take a number. I thought I was in a SNL skit or something. Dumbest thing I ever saw.

You have to take a number at the Indiana DMV, but it's so they can keep track of how long you wait and how long it takes for them to take care of your business.

I can remember about 50 years ago, you'd have to wait in line for maybe and hour or so.

I like it better now.

(I can't believe I stuck up for them. Normally, I'm bad mouthing the bureaucrats.)

Phil, Here's a name and number of a Car Gal who used to work for the DMV. She has been to our T club meetings and offered help and also her service to get thru Cal DMV. I'd give her a call and go over your paper work and everything with her before you talk to anyone at the DMV if you have anything special with your registration.

Audrey Welsch @ 562-546- THREE Five 00.

She's Very helpful and knowledgeable about how to navigate the Cal system.

If you are a AAA member they can help also, that's how I got my car done when I brought it out to SoKal.

Phiip,
I don't know you, and I don't want to insult you, but why are you insisting on doing this the way many of us who have been there before many times telling you that you are heading for problems. Give Audrey a call, if only to confirm either what we are telling you is true or that you can do it your way.
To give you one example; a friend bought a restored model A from another state, complete with all the paperwork. When he took it to have the ID numbers verified, the CHP officer decided that the number stamping looked funny and proceeded to grind it down to look for "the original number." The car was almost confiscated and we had to go to court (I was the expert witness since I was professionally restoring cars at the time. The judge was disgusted with the officer, that was obvious, and he told he was wasting the court's time. I took over two months and I don't know how many dollars to straighten that out. All because the owner insisted on "doing it their way" instead of using a licensed verifier who knows old cars (which I suggested beforehand, but he insisted,"Oh there won't be a problem, I have all the paperwork.").
Even I, who has been there, done that, used a registration service to get the title and license for Barney, my '25 runabout. Well worth the $200, as the title came in the mail and no hassles!
Please reconsider, we don't want to hear another horror story here!

Philip, try Newhall DMV. There is a Model T guy there on staff. He knows your VIN number is the engine number and will put it through on that. Of course they'll send you over to the CHP (you have to make an appointment for them too), just drive your car over there, let them look at it, see your engine number and if it's clear enough to read they'll accept it after looking it up in their computer to see if it was stolen or not. I asked the officer who inspected mine about that 16 digit number the other guy at the DMV in Arleta wanted to stick on the car and he told me it was not necessary for an antique car, the 16 digit number tells them where it was made, the manufacturers horsepower rating, the date made and bunch of other stuff that isn't applicable on a Model T Ford.

If you've got no papers on your car like I didn't I told them it was a farm vehicle, they didn't register farm vehicles in Oklahoma in the 20's, so there was nothing other than a bill of sale that was lost long ago. The DMV in Newhall made up new documentation for my car and even scrubbed off the previous owner from my YOM plates I had and registered my car to them, under my name. But be sure to make an appointment and also bring your car in there for them to inspect, don't worry what they're going to do is try and match anything you've got to the list they've got...which will amount to the number of doors on your car...my car is registered as a 3 door convertible. I told them it wasn't a convertible, because it has no windows, convertible is short for convertible sedan...my car is a Touring Car. Well that's not on their list, so I settled for convertible, even though I didn't have a top at the time (I think just about every DMV worker was out looking at my car when I went over there, asking question and wanting rides round the parking lot, or just to sit in it.

And George, AAA cannot register a car in California, that has never been registered in this state before, you can renew a registration and maybe change a registration at one but you can't register one there that has never been registered. The only place you can register any car in Califunny is the bloody DMV, and you need to find one understands Model T's.

Oh and one other thing, due to the tax salutation now in Califunny, never mention how much you paid for the car, don't even tell them you put it together from parts (that is if you did) and never tell them that the engine (if isn't) original to you car...my engine is 1924 in a 1922 car, then don't need to know that. If you've got as bill of sale or know the guy who made it for you, if it is or over $2000, have make a new one for $1300 or $1500 you'll pay less vehicle tax on your car, if you go in there and tell them you paid $5000 or more, you're going to be paying tax on that car equal to buying a new bloody car and not an antique, my tax and registration was $144 with my YOM's (which means the price I paid for buying my YOM's was more than it cost me to register the entire car). :-)

To Martin Vowell - Massachusetts decides what the car is worth; the bill of sale is irrelevant. They forced me to pay a tax on more then $1,000 over the price that I actually did pay for my '27.
Florida was no problem when I moved. You call the police to verify the numbers, the constable comes right to your residence and will verify the numbers on the spot. He did five cars and my trailer - he even provided the forms, and there was no charge for the service. He wasn't fazed by the T engine number.

It's pretty generous of some states to send an officer to your car to inspect it. If I register a new car here I have to transport it to the police station at the county seat. They will inspect it only during a few hours on two days a week. Except for that, registration here has always been pretty easy.

We have a problem in California at this time because we allow non U.S. citizens to obtain drivers licenses the U.S won't approve them for interstate ID. So we need a new license called "Real ID" to board airplanes for interstate travel. We need to show SS number and birth certificate or U.S. passport to obtain this new identification. This needs to be done at the DMV before 2020. So there are long lines at the DMV to get this new ID. That is why appointments are needed at this time.

I know what you mean about ordering on the computer. I have that trouble when I want to buy something on line. I either check out wrong and cancel my order, or log in again to see if the order was placed and end up ordering twice!

Life is always changing, isn't it!
Norm

I knew what State you live in even before I opened up your posting. Ca. DMV is a nightmare you must learn to control. They can be managed but it's getting harder all the time. Using a professional service to help in dealing with them is good advice. AAA can't help with undocumented vehicles or anything else but the simplest transactions.

Everything needed in getting a Title here in Texas is up to the individual needing it. You either have to take your car
to the DMV or maybe driving it if possible.
It's best to get as much done before you take it to the DMV and not for them to do it all.

Well, Texas, and other states are NOT Califunny. If you were to drive your vehicle to the DMV before it was fully documented and plated, you would (in their eyes) be committing a Great Crime and would have to pay dearly--you could trailer it there--BUT, I would never do that; each clerk is different, each office is different, in spite of "standardized" training, likewise, at least in this area, I would NOT take it to the DMV for verification. The officer that does that in this area is a known south end of a north facing horse and takes delight in torturing people. In the case I dealt with, the judge was pretty much disgusted with him, but the officer continued to try to block my friend from getting his car registered--in spite of the judge's directions.
If you could get that SAME clerk in Newhall as Martynn used, you will probably be OK.
You seemed to imply that you have an old title from you family. Transactions within immediate family, especially inherited ones, are handled a bit differently--for the better!

Martynn, When I took my car over ,it had a clean title from Missourah and plates. .They took the title, checked the VIN under my floor boards and said I was good. Issued temp title ,issued new plates, checked Ins. and I was on my way. Official title came in the mail 6 weeks later.

Philip, YOU are the exact person that needs to call and talk to Audrey Welsh at the number I posted earlier. If she had helped Marty he would not have had his T listed as a Convertible as well.

By comparison, transferring the title for my 1917 touring in Michigan was a non-event. They didn't ask to see the car, didn't quibble about the seven digit VIN number, nothing. It is listed as a convertible but I can live with that. My Willys Army Jeep is listed as a two-door, despite the fact there are no doors.
$15 to transfer the title and 6% sales tax on the selling price and I was out the door. Took maybe ten minutes.

My brother gave me a 79 Bronco years back. It had been rolled and repaired, title was salvage from the insurance company totaling it and the guy bought it back, then sold it to my brother. They were friends and just kept renewing the tag.
I had to get a "salvage vehicle inspection" done at the State Highway Patrol office 2 counties over. I talked my boss at the time into letting me borrow a dealer tag to drive it there. Had to schedule an appointment and all they did was check serial numbers and look for stolen parts...done.
