If I remember correctly, there was a vendor at Hershey a few years ago that specialized in ring gears for older cars and tractors. Does anyone know of this guy? I am looking for a ring gear for an old British car, a 1951 Standard Vanguard. Any leads would be appreciated
Most manual trans flywheels can have the ring gear flipped over, giving a new surface.
Before someone asks: No you cannot do that on a T. Actually you can, if you want the starter to constantly jam, so in reality, "no you do not want to do that".
Not sure if he attends Hershey, but I suspect Al Suehring can help:

Hello Dave: This is the guy for ring gears.

Someone told me they fit a Ferguson tractors ring gear but I doubt it. Gaskets maybe. Ask a ferguson expert to confirm that?
Thanks guy's, I'll contact Al. I am investigating the possibility of a Ferguson TEA 20, which used the same motor. However from what I see so far, the number of teeth is different. Also investigating a ring gear for a Triumph TR-2 which was built by the same company and used the same basic engine.
Dave, the triumphs used a replaceable ring gear on the flywheel that is the same through the tr-6, although there were several different starters used. The tr -2 through the 1958 tr 3A used a closed nose starter that the drive moved rearward and engaged the flywheel from the front. The bell housing was different from the later style. The starter drive gave problems due to the rubber clutch slipping. The later tr-3A up through the tr-4A used an open starter drive on a longer shaft that pulled in from the rear of the flywheel, and gave very few problems. The bell housing was different because there was a longer relief cast in it behind the flywheel to make room for the longer drive. The six cylinder cars ran the longer type drive but the starter motor was smaller diameter. There are replacement starters out there for both the early and later style starters, that are based on the tried and tru mitsubishie type starter. These have the drive going to the rear, like the early style starter. If yours is a rear pull in type, that used the rear of the flywheel gear. The new type would use the front.
