Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2018: New Snow and smiles per mile

We got our first real snow last night. I drove the Coupe to coffee with the guys. 34° gave an easy start with the car already on the jack. Two upholsterers were using the dumpster and I stopped to say Hi. One was new and hadn't had a Car ride so I took him for a spin. He said his Grandfather had a 1911 Touring in Massachusetts. Joe Gallir....something maybe. Some may know him. The stop for gas brought a young guy out to look. His boss sent him out to find out what year the T was, so he said. Several folks were brushing snow from their windshields. It stays on the slanted ones I guess. Some smiled and some didn't. Kids on their way to school smiled and waved. A guy pushing a snowblower with a cigarette dandling looked up. It was another wonderful trip in the T.
The down side was black on my hands from the damp steering wheel and finding the trunk lock under the snow.
The jack sinks into the mud some so I put a board under it. It also will freeze in place sometimes.
I have been criticized for allowing my Coupe sit outdoors year round but the shiny paint on one fender and hood illustrate how the dry climate is somewhat forgiving.
Enjoy Winter any way you can when it gets here.
Rich

Richard I had to look twice at that rear wheel with no wood spokes. Sounds like fun! I played in the snow all morning but it was fighting a house fire. Nobody hurt. I want to get my coupe on the road. After TT is done.

Dallas, Coupes have their advantages. The big rear window is close and has great visibility over the little trunk. Suicide doors on the earlier ones give good access to things. I forget what year yours is.

I see Bill Harper (above) also has a '24 Coupe. I always liked those. When I started gathering closed car parts that is what I thought would be fun. Then Tudor bodies came along and I built a '25. Closed cars are nice. I drug the family around Winters in the Speedster. It made us tough but I'm happy to drive "in doors" now.

One more. FWIW the white paint on the spare Riverside was applied in the mid '60s. An attempt for the "all white" look. I use a truck jack as it is a little more stable. The cars have never gone off the jacks and I don't block the wheels outdoors as the ground keeps them from rolling. It would however be a good idea to do so. If your brake it not adjusted correctly the tire will spit some dirt unless you are very quick. Or scuff the tires on cement.
Enjoying the '20s common practice is always an adventure.
Rich

It is Gary. Today we left for breakfast before sunup. The outdoors is tough on lights and wiring but ours worked well.

The ambiance of the ride only updated by modern cars on pavement and Joy on her cell phone with the grandkids and their spelling words.

Again, Life is Good.

Richard,
Black on your hands from the steering wheel ?
We used to use wax on the steering wheel 50 years
ago when I had a model A. It seemed to work well and lasted a while
I haven't used it on the TT yet. There is much more work before I need to turn the steering wheel.

Thanks. The black only comes off when it is moist. If the trunk is dripping water on the jack handle the black will mostly rinse off then. Things always work out.
We didn't use the Coupe to get a Christmas tree today. Here it was in '14.

Richard

I'm beginning to think you live in a 1924 "bubble". Apparently the Theory of Relativity is not relative in your universe. I'm pretty sure that thing is not capable of exceeding the speed of light. :-)

I would think you leave a trail of injured people in your slow wake as they snap their heads in disbelief. Is health insurance more in Idaho than other parts of the world because of you??

I really get a kick out of your photos...

Scott, the bubble began when I was 14 and was 1930. It has gotten progressively earlier since that time. My driving is limited and usually in a T. When I drove my wife's modern car the other day I lifted the turn signal for right before starting it. Folks do enjoy seeing the cars out but the rusty Coupe gets a special kind of attention.
Others may have noticed but some days there is more magic than others. Maybe something in the air or the way the sun is shining brings out more looks and waves that other times.
I'm glad to hear the photos are enjoyed too.
Rich

Thank you Wayne. That is nice to hear. The magic is out there but sometimes we don't see it. It seems to look good on the computer screen.

The Coupe saves winter wear and tear on our Tudor. We drove the latter several winters but the salt etc worried us.
Our Christmas Dinner yesterday required more room for gifts and paraphernalia so we drove the Tudor.
The roads were clear enough this morning to drive it to breakfast. We have warmed up to 13° at night so the cars start easier this week.

Sun is out, it's a tropical 30F this afternoon, side curtains gotta be as comfortable as a closed car (?) - roads are dry, no excuse not to give Lizzie some exercise. Hannah (my dog) is always ready to take a ride. Ma says it's too cold for her.

A couple of other occurrences I might mention came to mind. Leaving the car outdoors in snowy weather invites ice to form over the trunk lock hole. With the gas tank in the trunk this ice needs to be scraped away to check or fill the tank. If water has found it's way into the lock the key will not go in. My first solution was to heat the key and melt the ice. Now I've found that pouring a bit of warm antifreeze down the hole works even better. I keep a spare hubcap and pliers handy for this.
The jack used to hold the car up can freeze to the ground. While it is difficult to kick over in place when the car is let down I can drive forward a bit and get a good kick at it. Leaving it there doesn't work as the car will not return to exactly the same spot.
It was near 0° last night and no buzz came from the coils this morning. The timer is suspect as after a dozen revolutions from the starter the engine fired a few times. This created some heat and the car eventually started. I'm guessing either some frozen moisture or stiff oil prevents good contact of the roller.
The doors stick shut and take some persuading to open on the Coupe when it is this cold. Perhaps more moisture in the wood.
Still the T's get me through the winter months as I don't indulge in the many other winter activities.

There is lots of fun out there if we stop to see it.
Thanks for the name Spencer. I knew someone would know him.
I read about some folks who "went rabbit hunting they’d put the dogs on their laps and put their hunting coats over the hounds for warmth" from one of the forum members.
There are many stories that could be shared here that I would enjoy.
HAPPY NEW YEAR almost
Rich

No new snow but lots of smiles today. The Touring hasn't been out in the snow this winter yet so we took it to our club's BRRRRunch this morning. I jacked up one wheel without blocking the front tire. This is the first time one has come off the jack. The engine killed immediately but the rotating tire left quite a skid mark. I don't see this as a hazard but will block a wheel from now on.
Bundled up I knocked the horn off it's mount again. I have been patient watching folk squeeze the bulb but can't blame them from it breaking today. Other than the garage door running off the track it was a perfect journey. The salt on the roads was mostly dry.
We only had 3 cars and 14 members there but an auction today was competition for our breakfast. So fun and only 27° F.
Rich
