ANYONE HAVE TROUBLE WITH THE .040 GASKETS HOLDING THE COVER UP SO THE ALIGNMENT TOLL WON'T FIT ? I have tried other gasket mtl and it takes about .015 before it will line up. this fitting is with now crank or cam seal in place. I cant see where this should be a problem since I am only going to use it on the short piece of the pan under the cover. Does this sound ok to you old timers ? THANKS TO ALL FOR THE HELP IN ADVANCE
It sure would help if you would mention the year T you are working on!
Chris, are you doing this with the pan in place, with the engine in the car? Two things hold the cover up, the crankshaft seal and the gasket. I fit the cam seal after the cover is on.
The gasket has never been a problem for me, but fitting the cover with the white A model rope seal does make things more difficult.I like to leave the seal a little bit long so it has to be compressed when the cover is bolted down. I bolt the cover DOWN first to compress the seal, before trying to bolt it back to the block. Try the alignment tool with just the two bolts either side of the crankshaft, before fitting the others.
Hope this helps.

Larry sorry for the omission I ,M WORKING ON A 1919 tt truck.
It does not matter what year the car is as the timing gear cover should be flush with the bottom of the block where the pan bolts on. That goes for all cars. I have found the cover typically has to be tapped down slightly to get the alignment tool in. Run the bolts in just snug to keep the cover from moving back up and tap it down with a mallet until the tool fits in the timer recess and rotates without dragging on the sides of the recess then tighten everything up and recheck. If you are using a rope seal that might be causing your problem.

I typically use the rope seal and need to use some clamps to compress it and pull the cover into the proper position.
