Today was supposed to be the big day.....assembly of my rebuilt 1918 block to the crankcase, a major event since I've been working on this engine for close to a year now.
In another post, I detailed how my nice new "store bought" timing cover gasket didn't fit so I cut another. This morning I gooped up the gasket, installed my modern oil seal and began to install the cover on the engine. I had just started the bolts when I realized there was a huge open space behind the oil filler. What the? Suddenly it dawned on me that my cover was for a generator equipped engine...which mine is not. No wonder the gasket was wrong! I pulled everything apart, muttered a few words about my own stupidity and kicked back with a cup of coffee. It's time to slow down a bit and enjoy this hobby instead of rushing so much that silly mistakes are made. I'll place a "want to buy" ad in the classifieds for a new timing cover, then push my assembly date out after a well deserved rest.
I remember the words of my instructor in the aircraft engine class I took back in the late sixties...."Proper planning prevents piss poor production".
Happy New Year everyone!
George, things happen! If we had a photo of the parts in question we might have seen that. Over the years so many blocks/engines have been swapped, numbers changed that we assume something that might not be. Hope you have the correct cover? It's a hobby, don't stress over it!

Thanks Mark, and you're right....there should be no stress, just fun. I discovered crack in the original cover, so I grabbed a replacement from my stash. Didn't even see the difference until I tried to install it. No problem though.......I placed an ad on the classifieds and I'm sure someone will have what I need.
Sent you an email George, I have both styles ready to go.

My buddy's grandfather said "you get in too big a hurry and you'll end up staying all night".
Just stay the course !!
I don’t want to self incriminate myself, but we have all done way too much stupid stuff. We are older and wiser so now....., we laugh together not at each other!
All the Best!
