Caswell Plating sells a kit that is similar to cadmium plating but without the hazards of actual cadmium. I've never used any of their products, but from what I've read, all of them are top quality. Just my two cents worth. Good luck and thank you for taking on this badly needed task.

Notice the dual license plates?

People that worked in D.C. and lived in outlying areas, such as Maryland, Virginia, etc. were required to display the license plates from their state of residence and D.C.

If Bob Bergstadt has originals, I would go with one of those. I put a script original on my car in 2000. I replaced the bad repo one that was on the car when I bought it. Never had another problem.
They're also held together with screws making them serviceable.
