I use two set screws to keep the hub straight with the axle, and I tighten them, and use a lock nut. You do not want the hubs sliding, in, and out, as cornering, and ruts will do.
All that I have put in, no problems.

Re: Oil dippers on rod cap question
Holes in the cap, or web, and a Dipper will do no good, unless the rod has a X Groove System. The holes in the web should be 3/16, and drilled on both sides of the web. The cap should be drilled with 3/16 hole, and not over 1/4. With out the X Groove, oil can not enter the bearing. It would be like ...

Re: Babbitt Material
Herm, thanks for the input. I will stick with grade 2. My book on rebuilding model A’s claims that Ford went to a cheaper lead base babbit because they thought the more robust, larger crankshaft did not require the more expensive grade. Maybe that is why the Ford name is on some lower grade babbit ...

Re: Radius on big end bearings
Herm, thank you, that is good information. Is the gold rod photo in your post as poured? Do you have a side-on photo? It's hard to compare it with the static-pour rod being from two different angles. I can see you had leakage with the static-pour rod. I used a combination of aluminium welding wire ...

Re: Babbitt Material
Just because babbitt has Ford in the babbitt, does not mean it came from the Ford Factory, it may be 86-7-7, but it didn't come from Ford. The babbitt in the Ford Garages, that we got with Wilson tools, that was Ford Babbitt, all had Ford Imprinted in the bar, and written out, Just like the Model T,...

Re: Jack Rabbit or Turbo 400?
I pulled my 23 engine several years ago to replace transmission output shaft and the slipping transmission that I had put turbo 400 plates into. The turbo plates looked good, but about 1/3 of the Ford steel plates were cracked. I suspect due to heat from the slipping transmission. I replaced the pl...

Bottom line, is that with Jack Rabbit, you MUST put in a spring that meets or exceeds original pressure at original deflection. Neutral will be improved with either choice. Just don't expect that they will hold up or be MORE robust than a stock clutch." End Quote. It is NOT the Jack Rabbit Clutch th...

R. G's heads are flat on the inside, are all the same depth, from one end to the other. They will " PING ".
The Z head is built like the Waukesha, and Hebbie High Power.

We either would take the two down by removing metal from the two heaviest, or adding weight, by wire welding, filling the two holes, to the two lightest. Easy.

It's funny how opinions go. I've never used anything. I just tap them in, and leave it at that! There are different years of engines that, when laying the seal in the front cover, the seal has a lot of slop, about .010 to much. When the cover is to big, we have always laid the seal on a anvil, clos...

We don't like to weld on a crank, but what is done is done. The bolts that come with the weights, we do not use, as we had a set come loose once. Re: Spindle Bolt oil groove?
Some repro bolts are hardened, and then ground, they have oil grooves, or use to.
The cheap ones were ground, and then hardened, have no oil grooves, but the bolts then are all warped, and they are NOT useable, at all, as they are junk.

We have always just drilled the center hole in the spindle, between the bushings, and put a small pound in grease zerk in it , and you can fill the cavity between the top, and bottom bushings, and will push gun grease out both top and bottom of the bushings. It lasts a whole lot longer then oil. We ...
