Re: inner seal rear axle removal

Don't make this mistake I made. After reading a few posts and taking out the roller bearing and the liner from my rear axle I saw what I thought was the remnant of an inner seal. It was covered in grease. Pulling with a hook on the end of sturdy wire didn't budge it. I made a tool out of 1/8" flat s...

Re: Over size valve stems/reamer

In response to two questions, I purchased my .327 valves and the reamer shown in the 2 pictures from Snyder's.

Re: Over size valve stems/reamer

Attached are a couple of pictures showing my 1919 engine getting reamed. The standard .312 valves wobbled around in the guides. The engine machine shop owner who was helping me said the wobble was too much. So I decided to install .327 valves, which required reaming. I asked the machine shop owner d...

Re: Steam holes?

Humblej I am eating humble pie. Indeed the light I could see coming through two holes in the crankcase was coming through holes where the bottom of the valves and tops of the lifters are, which is nowhere near the top of the block where the steam holes are. Whew! Someone would need a long drill bit ...

Steam holes?

I am working on getting my 1919 center door sedan running after it was put in a barn in 1948. Below is a picture of my block all cleaned up. I understand that the 5 small holes are "steam holes" to allow steam in the water jacket to escape. I have the pan off underneath and I was looking at the very...

Re: 1914 Engine Questions

My 1919 Model T engine has the same type of lifters shown in this post. I just put new valves in and 5 of the stems sit on the lifters, inside the ridge around the edge of the lifters. Those 5 valves do not sit in the valve seats. I can slide a narrow strip of paper all round the valve. As pictured ...

Re: Can I test starter with head off ... crank spring

The engine is not stuck. Underneath is beautiful and well oiled. The cylinders and and intakes and exhaust ports were caked with baked on carbon. I had already cleaned all that off and now the top of the engine is beautiful too. Since the starter does not work, and if I can't get it overhauled soon,...

Re: Can I test starter with head off

In addition to the other things I did to prepare for the starter test, I took the timer off. I did this because I had previously removed the generator, and without the brace that goes from the generator mount to the timer and holds the timer in place it was just sitting there loosely. I didn’t have ...

Re: Can I test starter with head off

Thank you! I have already done what you said to do in 1), including hand cranking. I'll jack up a wheel as you suggested. I'll wait to see if anyone else replies before I try the starter.

Can I test starter with head off

I back at getting a 1919 Center Door running after 77 years in storage. It has the generator and starter options. At present the head is off, valves out, coilboxes overhauled and also out, carburetor overhauled and out, no battery in, generator out for testing and switch/ammeter out to fix the fact ...

Re: Operation of combination ignition and lights dash switch

Yes Robert Kiefaber, I stand corrected ... the car is a center door sedan. I have done all the things Robert Kling mentioned and more. When the car was put in the barn in 1948 my uncle stored it properly and when I got it I could turn the engine with the crank. The nuts have been removed from the he...

Re: Operation of combination ignition and lights dash switch

Wow all these replies already. Thanks!! This car will run again, after over 70 years of inactivity. I have not started it yet. Much cleaning. Hickory nuts in the head. Etc. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again. John

Operation of combination ignition and lights dash switch

My 1919 Tudor has the keyed switch that appears to be quite standard. The back of the switch says CLUM. The key in the front says Ford. The switch face has DIM OFF ON in large letters around the top and, in smaller letters, BAT on the left and MAG on the right side. I have an original 1919 Ford Manu...

Re: Model T on a 2-post lift

Thank you very much for the suggestion to use 4x4 beams to support a Model T on the axles using a 2 post lift. Without the beams, the arms on my hoist could not reach the axels because the wheels were in the way. I did not have laminated 4x4s and I did not want to use solid ones in case there was a ...
