And it's fixed... Woo-Hoo! Thank you Admin Jeff! The fried component was a MOSFET (metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor), basically a switching device, connected to the generator terminal. Re: Looking for 8-1/2° taper reamer...

Thank you Jeff. I've seen Dan's advert, and while the degree of taper is not listed I suspected they would suffice. Unfortunately, it looks like Dan's are sets only, and close to $500 US a pop. I don't need the bottom tap, just the reamer. Surely this is not a situation where the inserts are an oddb...

Looking for 8-1/2° taper reamer...

Lang's markets front axle repair kits with a tapered upper insert. They state an 8-1/2° taper reamer is required. Internet searches for these reamers have come up dry (and/or I'm not searching right). Where is such a tool generally available? Thank you. T axle repair kit.png T axle repair parts.png

Darel, for everyone's benefit, please dig a little deeper into this mysterious hubcap. I suggest peeling back the cut-or-broken brass at this point (blue arrow) and looking underneath... My guess is that you will find the other side of the brass is threaded, just like any other hubcap, and the outsi...

Re: cast brass Ford T hubcap

Jeff beat me to it whilst I was annotating the photo below. The four yellow arrows point to what are most probably threads on the inner ring, much as one would expect to find on a front hub. Assuming the inner piece is indeed threaded, why would one need to also weld or solder it into place? The ora...

Winter drive Nov 13

A few of us went out for our monthly "Winter Be Damned" run this afternoon around Strathcona County SE of Edmonton. Lovely day for a drive, sunny and just below freezing. No mechanical issues and we even sorted a problem with the '11 Touring and returned home running better than when we left. 50+ mi...

Unusual rear hub failure

Unusual to me, anyway. 1924 Speedster, pulling away from a stop sign and GRAUNCH. Car coasted to a stop about eight blocks from home. Almost pushing distance. The cause was clear after pulling it apart the next day, but it has me wondering... did Ford make some of these hubs in two pieces? That's an...

Not breaking any new ground here, but since the speedster diff was illuminated and clean, the photos show a couple of modifications that make maintenance, and the eventual sale of the car, a bit easier: brass pipe thread drain plug, and brass "bronze thrust' ID tag. 24T diff drain & tag.jpeg 24T...

Rear spring spreader made from clamps and 2-bys

I needed the rear spring eyes spread an additional 1-1/4" to line up the shackle pins. This setup worked like a charm. Particularly helpful IMO were the 2x3 under the two shackle eyes, and the vertical 2-bys that held the spring and the 2x3 in alignment. Alternating half-turns on the centre C-clamps...

A couple things I have found that make the installation of these wood blocks and fasteners easier: Use a pry bar of some sort to move the pan ear and frame apart a fraction of an inch. This makes it far easier to tap the blocks into position. Some years ago I ditched the cotter pins and castle nuts ...

Dave, our high yesterday was +3C (+37F). Thanks to the sun there was some melting, particularly on roads and sidewalks. Some snow melt would have evaporated but most refroze last night. This is warmer than usual for late February but we’ve had some unusual temperature swings this winter.
