I just removed, cleaned, and re-greased the front axle bearings on the roadster. I don't know when it has been done on this T I've been on 2 tours with since purchase. Yes, I know. I should have done it earlier. I used Royal Purple grease for the first time.

Re: Ruckstell 3:25 Ring Gear, Bill Everett
I believe, as Bob said, you would need the 12 tooth pinion and a recessed ring gear made for the 3:1 high speed gears. Then you would need to add space under the ring gear to raise it to the proper clearance with the 12 tooth pinion. When I did it, I had to add a 1/16 inch, or .0625 shim. Stacking s...

Rather than tacking this onto the other LED thread, I just have a question. I've joined a number of folks by adding TCW-3 two-stroke oil to gas in my T's, as well as my moderns. It's designed to burn and is a top cylinder lube, decreasing piston ring friction and lubing the valve stems. Re: wanted - 1925 engine block or complete engine
Scott, let me check my stash of engines at my shed. I'll need to check the SN's. I'm not that far east of you. MAYBE there's a 25 in the group.

Re: inner rear axle bearings
I was able to find another Hyatt in my stash today that is .497-.498. one end is .001 smaller. I'll use it and try to de-rust the other Hyatt for possible future use. I hate throwing away the more worn one, so will keep it and consider shim stock behind the race if I use it. The solid one.....who kn...

inner rear axle bearings
I'm replacing a broken right axle in my Ruxtell with new axles. I found the right outer sleeve was cracked, and the housing had a cracked/grooved portion at the far outer edge that either occurred at the time of the break or preceded it. Both axles were replaced 15+ years ago and the broken one had ...

Re: replacing a connecting rod.
In follow up, I was able to remove the #3 rod through the inspection port fairly easily. I put a bolt through the wrist pin and rotated the piston so that the bolt contacted the block to avoid twisting the rod, and removed the wrist pin bolt. I slid the wrist pin partially out with a long L shaped a...

Re: Question about rods
Interesting discussion. I'm in the middle of replacing a rod I wrecked in my 23. I ordered a re-babbited rod bored to my crankshaft and just got it today. It's an aftermarket "light" rod but weighs 569 grams compared to my Ford script rod at 486 grams (without bolts or nuts). After discussion with m...

Re: replacing a connecting rod.
Thank you, gentlemen, for your comments. I may try to pull the rod through the bottom. If it doesn't work, I'll pull the head. The crank looks pristine, measuring 1.235, so it must have had a regrind when overhauled 15 years ago. Since all the other rods look good, I assumed the problem was my not p...

replacing a connecting rod.
I got careless (stupid) when adjusting my rods, putting oil in the caps but neglecting to fill the rod dips before starting. At about 30 seconds a loud knocking occurred. Pulling the inspection pan revealed #3 rod was loose and had damaged babbit. The journal looks pristine, and the other rods are t...

Re: Ruckstell ring/pinion clearance.
The only place I believe I could place a .065 shim is to make one to fit between the notch plate and inner differential housing, but then my shifter fork MAY not move the sliding clutch gear enough for a positive shift. Other spots appear to affect the sliding gear mesh with the notch plate and thru...

Re: Ruckstell ring/pinion clearance.
I very much appreciate the above comments. The ring gear and pinion align well, and the system turns easily. I just trial fitted both a .015 and a .010 shim (0.025 total) and now have .048 so it appears the lateral movement relates directly to the shim thickness. I am hesitant to stack four 0.015 sh...

I admit I'm a shade tree mechanic (with no air conditioning in my garage). I'm replacing the standard ring gear with no relief on the back with a 39 tooth gear with a relief and a 12 tooth pinion to get a 3.25:1 gear ratio. The previous owner had neglected to replace the right side inner Hiatt beari...

Dennis, we're headed for our cabin in the Black Hills this afternoon. Custer is a great place. You can make floorboards from a 2 ft by 4 ft 5/8" plywood chunk. Re: Looking For Drive Pins For Pasco 60 Spoke Wire Wheels
John, I lost a wheel and hub last year on the Spokane tour because I didn't check and the prier owner hadn't peened the nuts on the inside of the left rear brake hub. (across a field and lay down in the weeds 1/4 mile away.) I made the replacements using grade 5 bolts of the correct length, tapped a...

Make sure that when you replaced the timer wires that they didn't get crossed. I've seen experienced T mechanics make that mistake. The firing order is 1-2-4-3. Slowly turn the engine over with the battery on and check what plugs fire.

Sorry, no pics so I must not have done it. First I replaced 3 outer spokes on one of my Pasco wheels. I removed the band and a local welder welded in a patch piece that is ne...

I think I lost a little low end torque with the high volume intake but the biggest loss was with the exhaust change. Due to a loose lower crank pulley, I removed the radiator and fan on my '20 roadster. The cotter had broken holding the pulley pin and the pulley was loose. Since I had a leak from the front anyway, I cleaned the block face with diesel fuel followed by brake cleaner and made a "belt and suspenders" ...
