Get a helper
Jack up the rear and put it up on jack stands
Remove the plugs (to eliminate compression forces)

Has the magneto ever worked in this car?

I would test the magneto before going too far.

It is possible to have a shorted magneto post so that is a quick test.
The last one I found was a tiny bit of wire caught in the spring, never found out where it came from.
I have seen several mag posts that do not connect well in certain spring positions...

What a great car. Wish I had an extra $23.5K laying around. While the top boot may be repro, at least IT is CORRECT in that it has what I refer to as the infamous flaps on either side. So many repro's do not, I even paid the extra $125 to Classtique to have it put on my '13's top boot. Labor intensive I guess! But it looks great and is correct....

After reading all the responses and thinking back at what I had done, I went out to my shop and carefully unbolted the shifter and pulled it out slowly while trying to see where the fork was in relation to the collar groove. Sure enough! The fork was on the right side of the collar groove. No wonder I only had one gear. Works now...

I agree everyone needs to be careful. I do not do any pay system besides Cash or Check.

Harvey, it is a good idea to re-torque the axle nut after driving the car a bit. I always leave the hubcap off after pulling a wheel to reminds me to do the re-torque.

Why not buy a rebuild kit? Do it yourself, and you will get a feel for what this hobby is all about. For myself, I bought one of Reagans plastic kits.

Early runabouts had a square tank. Look at the picture of the open runabout from the Ford agency on Broadway in NY. The build specs on my ‘10 Touring shows that it was delivered to that Ford agency in March of 1910.

Both sides of the engine covers / hood are there and straight. I'm not the best photographer in the world, and the lighting is a little weird. And not exactly clean either - I think the lighting is showing the layer of dust that I should clean off. I attached a better view.

The next time you are in the Twin Cities, go to Tandy Leather at 8901 Penn Ave in Bloomington. In addition to their regular leather stock, they also sell miscellaneous pieces of scrap leather in various sizes and thickness.

You can dye the leather with Fiebing's Black Leather Dye. It's getting harder to find at local shoe repair places...
