The discussion on the use of coolant - what is the proper range for the Model T?

And how hot is too hot?

They usually run from about 180 to 200 F. Boiling over is too hot. With modern oil and modern coolant, 200 to 215 F is no problem for the engine, as long as the system is full of coolant and working properly. Any atmospheric cooling system will boil at lower temperatures at higher altitudes.

Just putting this out there if anyone is interested. I plan on being there Friday with some odds and ends. Maybe a HCCT, a couple different rod alignment checkers, some pullers and excess tools. Maybe a set of wire wheels and hubs.

The journey:

Last fall I joined this forum.

Shortly after I found a local model T club and joined, along with my 12 year old son.

I was immediately welcomed and impressed by the people as well as the car. (the club has work days regularly at least 1 -2 per month)

I wasn't completely prepared to get a car... but I was inspired to begin...

It would probably be cheaper to pay someone to do it, but I don't want to do it unless it's costs more money than needed....

I will need to match the current carmine red pinstripe on the cab...

The kit comes with basic colors and I am sweating matching the color...

I have seen a couple wheels re-spoked but didn't get involved enough to learn the process.

My passenger rear had three loose spokes and when I jacked up the car it turned into more than a couple.

I ended up depleting the supply of U shims I had access to (8) and the wheel tightened up just fine.

It now has a bit of side to side wobble.

Willy. Be sure to realize that a Ruckstell is a mid range drive and not an overdrive. That's a lot of $$$. bobt

Leave the hubcap off the rear wheels to remind you to check the tension on the axle nuts once you have done a few trips/miles. Things settle in after a bit of use. You may get another slot or two.

Does a muratic acid and water solution for rust removal eat away at brass or bronze fittings or bushings?
I know that a sodium bicarbonate solutions and a battery charger eats away at brass fittings.

Muriatic acid is not worth the effort or the hassle. You have to be careful to neutralize it after and storing the stuff anywhere in a closed building (even in a tightly closed container) will wreak havoc on any bare metalic parts or surfaces- AKA rust or corrode them. Just a heads up.

Hi Everyone,
I'm looking to install a RICARDO PAT NOV 13 1923 HEAD & would like to send it out to have it surfaced .010 to get a better gasket seal but I'm
concerned about piston clearance. The current area over the piston is .423 so I would end up with .413 with a gasket crush of .050 to .060.
I have found info on line of the stock compression...

Put a ball of modeling clay on top of each piston then put the head on and crank it over and remove the head and see how much you squish the clay. You can buy the clay at the dollar ($1.35) store. bobt

Helping someone identify the year on a center door. The engine is a ‘22, but it has a metal firewall. It is my understanding the metal firewall didn’t come along until mid ‘23. I assume a 22 center door would have a wood firewall? Is it possible that someone rebuilding this years ago put a metal one where there was wood, or is this likely a ‘23?...

As Steve mentioned it could be possible that the wood firewall was replaced sometime in the early 20’s and even later. If you had a low cowl wood firewall a dealer might have had a steel one or even went to a salvage yard to put one in your car. In the low cowl transition years it probably happed more than we think. My Model T (1916 with a 1921 starter engine) came to me wired with positive ground. I would like to change it to negative ground (just because that's the way Ford did it).
Advice please: Can I simply polarize the generator by putting B+ to the field, reverse the battery cables, and go? Will the cutout work with no change? Should I replace the...

Pat .... It would be physically better to remove the battery and then reinstall with the negative terminal closest to the frame rail, reconnect cables to battery, install battery, hold downs and enjoy your ride.

I’m going to try a chapter thread this year. We need to remember this is a club site and chapter activities are important. By sharing what we do maybe other chapters can get some fresh ideas.

So, we meet the first Thursday of the month. Since it was January 2nd it was lightly attended. We had 18 people where we usually have in the 25-30 range....

It’s been almost a month since I posted. We got everything done early in April. So far this month we had our monthly meeting and Saturday we had a Shop Day and switched out the engine in a 19 touring. It went pretty smooth considering how many cooks were in the kitchen.

I recently acquired a large group of ancient (1910's to 1930's) negatives from the Kansas City Southern Railroad. These were once part of the railroad's files and are generally photos of railroad structures and the like. The Ford Model T manages to show up in some of the photos, so I thought I would share them here.

My car used to track just fine, but after the rebuild, the steering is fairly squirrely. The springs have been re-arched, new perches, new spindle bolts, new shackles, pretty much everything has been replaced.

The spindles are now showing about 2 degrees of inclination. I loosened the wishbone at the engine pan, and the front axle immediately...

Part of my rocky mtn brakes came off and vanished into the ether the other day. I don’t need a whole new set, but some of the parts that went missing on my country drive. Where can I get just some replacement parts?

Im getting ready to respoke a set of wheels for our 25. The old spokes are removed, and im looking to order new ones.
I want to make sure that this is not a ford felloe, but a hayes, needing the slightly longer spokes.
Im holding an old spoke up to a new spoke in my 22's wheels, which has the slightly longer spoke.
I'm 80% sure they are hayes,...

All of our 21 wheels have the straight up outer edge on the felloes. i have never seen that on a 23 rim here. where Kelsey in Canada seem to have been the major/only supplier.
Interestingly, 21 Hayes wire wheels have an outer edge of the felloe rolled to the outside, making the relief for the lug foot even more interesting.
