Re: Starter locked up

I understand there were some reproduction Bendix drives years back that had an issue with the Acme thread or the pin & spring on the counterweight that would prevent the spring from disengaging the gear - maybe ???

My long time, now retired radiator guy made new tanks with Model T inlet & outlets for my Racer using the Whippet radiator - turned out pretty nice if I say so myself !

Re: Pesky oil leaks

I chased an oil leak down near both lower corners of the hogshead - turns out someone previously had used too long of bolts on the field coil mounting holes down on both bottom block holes and just "cracked" through the casting - copious amount of Brakleen then black RTV and bye-bye oil leak !

I make a practice of re-shaping the bowl bottom gasket area with a deep socket to make it flat again.

Re: Going Down Hill with a Ruckstell

Chad - think about your statement "On steep hills with ignition off alternate between the 3 pedals to allow oil in" - consider what is happening to the inside of the planetary gear action while you're doing that ? Re: 1915 Timing Gear Cover

I believe the felt seal is only adequate until it reaches the saturation point - thus the drain hole in the nose of the crankcase - I've installed both & prefer the rope although I believe the rope is "tougher" on the crankshaft nose.

Re: Play within the steering column

This is one task that really helps having another person hold & steady the column. I do them cold & have made bucking forms. As other have eluded to - the gear case needs to be quite tight in the housing.
