Re: A look at original late 1911/early 1912 front doors

The notches on the front end of the fore-door are there for relief for the special bolts nuts that are used to mount the side lamp brackets.

Re: WHY DO T CRANKS BREAK BEHIND #1 ROD?

John,
You are one up on me. This is my second. I have no desire to tie with you!

There are two types of Model T drivers:
1) Those who have broken a crankshaft.
2) Those who will brake a crankshaft.

Re: What have you done to your Model T in September?

John-
Broken cranks are a mystery. I think the #1 reason is a bent pan that contributes to metal fatigue. When I put this engine together the short block was done. I straightened the pan, put the transmission on and have had nearly 30 years of trouble free touring.

Steve- Thanks for sharing. That fore-door appears to be Beaudette. The nailed-on trim tells me it was made sometime before body B-22927. Later Beaudette bodies had a rolled-in bead. The hole in the top left is likely where a carriage bolt was used to attach a bracket. The hole on the right is where ...

Richard,
If you have access to a roller that has a removable end, you could slip the bracket in and run it back and forth between bends.

Maybe turn a wood block down on your lathe, bolt the bracket on and hammer into place maybe use your hot wrench too 🔥

You need a two contact plug for that socket, like this:

https://www.modeltford.com/item/6592X.aspx

It is hard to tell from your photos, but they look like very wide single contact plugs, which would make a short on the double contact socket, thus letting out the magic smoke.

1911 Model T Touring - Fred Lau restoration

I am listing for a friend who has a magnificent 1911 Model T that was restored by the late Fred Lau of Portland, Oregon. Red Fred 11.JPG Some of Fred’s cars were featured in Bruce McCalley’s books From Here to Obscurity, and Model T The Car That Changed the World. It has a show quality restoration a...

Nice work.
I've never had a car with a starter. I hope with the starter button so far forward won't be an issue. I wonder if it could be recessed to avoid unwanted engagement?

Re: Tire chains?

I made my chains 40+ years ago. I modified two sets of chains using pieces on one to lengthen the other. I have no idea what size I used. I was just a kid! 20230304_070218.jpg I usually use rubber straps for tension, but use these yellow modern chain tighteners last week. 20230223_100432.jpg My chai...

Are you looking for top irons, or top sockets?
I've got some 1914 type top irons.
I'll send you some pictures.

National Coil question

A friend of mine has a 1908 REO one cylinder and it has this National coil on it. REO coil 1.jpg I would like to do some diagnostic testing on it. Does anyone have any wiring diagrams for one of these? I'm going to guess the large contact in the center would be for the spark and is missing a big ins...

George, I say if your item:
1) was not lost and actually arrived
2) was not damaged
3) was not stolen off your porch after it was delivered,

It was a win - win - win.

Re: What have you done with your Model T in January

Moved my 1919 from the shop garage to the house garage so my son could put his modern iron in the shop for repairs.
It was cold, about 30*, but nice and sunny so Ruby and I took a quick spin around the neighborhood.

Tom, I bought a hand crank winch that has a strap from Harbor Freight. A couple of advantages: No wiring required. No metal cable to mar the trailer. No remote to loose or potentially have a dead battery. No restriction on cranking time.

Scott- Neither. I have a friend who has an attachment for his flaring tool that makes a bulge at the end. We used that and it worked great. Scott what "sharp bends" for the passenger side? There were no sharp bends for 1911.
What year are you working on?

Here is an image of (I believe) Kim Dobbins' 1910 passenger side:

Scott- Larry and I have been talking about converting 1/4" or 5/16" T barbs. Tom,
I'm thinking that picture #18 where they are fixing the left front flat tire, is the same car second from the bottom. The both have windshield rods and no top. Clearly the second from the bottom is a 1911 based upon the rear axle.
Thanks for the pictures!

Re: Breasworks “extreme” radiator?

I love the Brassworks flat tube radiator on my 1911. It even keeps the car cool in a slow paced parade on a hot day. Although the tubes are flat, it has the appearance of an original. I have a re-cored radiator on my 1919 (45 years ago) and it also keeps the car cool, but was done at a local shop an...

Gregory- For US production, the 1911-1912 cars were dark blue. Some dark blue spilled over into 1913 and even some in 1914. However, much of the 1913 and the vast majority of 1914 cars were black. However, Canadian cars were dark blue far longer than US production. Is your car Canadian? If so, I bel...

They kind of resemble clutch finger screws. Opposite of the slot end is a spring loaded ball. Model A perhaps?

William,
You could swap out the firewall with a standard 1914 full width and height firewall and then attach the windshield with a couple of vertical supports like were used on the open runabout from 1911.
1911 open runabout Byrne.jpg
I would think electrical conduit would work fine.

Re: Modern tank for acetylene lights

The problem with using an acetylene MC tank for Model T headlamps is it will not provide adequate acetylene supply for the lamps to be safely used continuously. You can only use an MC tank for brief demonstration purposes. I have to put on my safety guy hat here: "To minimize the withdrawal of liqu...
