My great-grandmother was born in 1866 and died in 1962. She lived with my grandparents and I saw her frequently. I don't think she ever referred to the car as anything but "the machine."

Jim, as a quick side note, you can make accents on a Windows-based computer by holding down the Alt key and typing 130. That way, you get - for example - Irénée du Pont. (I'm sure you can do it on a Mac as well, but I don't know how.)
