Caption states: winner of the Empire City 100 Mile Race, H.J. Koehler, driver of the Buick. October 27, 1906.
Seeing this, I immediately thought of Rich Eagle, who restored an ‘06 Buick. I’ll bet he can tell us more about the car. IMG_1044.jpeg

FWIW, what we are seeing in the old photo are the front cylinder and rockers and above that the oiler. To the right of the oiler is the timer.

The red thing in this photo is a cover for the flywheel and at left the planetary transmission. The brass carburetor is a Schebler. Ther are 3 pedals like a Model T but in different order.

They’re expecting traffic jams after as everybody that came from wherever departs for home. They are also warning of people stopping right on the highways...

Burger, are you saying the car behind Buster is a Packard ?
The Cole headlights are similar to Packard, however, the Packard lamps were not hexagonal - similarly shaped, the top of the rims were formed ro repeat the shape of the radiator, a hallmark Packard kept to the end of production.

They nudged it back some, re-tamped the dirt and put the screw in the pole. Boom done.

Another Off-Topic posting reminded me of a story my dad used to tell. A friend of his had a pre-War Ford. A flathead V8. Sometime after the war, the engine had a valve head break off. The piston and bore were destroyed. Cars were not easy to come by after the war, as most of you know. What to do... On his wood lathe, my dad turned a hunk of wood...

Reminds me of my uncle who had a Model A. He blew up one piston and the rod was just going up and down in the cylinder. This caused the wrist pin to dig a hole in the cylinder wall and finally the engine gave out. I bought it from him for 15 dollars and used the good parts, transmission, rear end and radiator for my Model A. The body was cut up...

This is a brilliant jack to use because you dont need to get down on the floor.
Set the approx height by inserting pin in a hole then slide the jack under the axle, push down on lever until wheel if off the ground and it locks itself down.
To lower the car push the jack handle to the floor, grip the lock lever then lift the handle as the car...

While visiting my hometown of Rupert, Idaho last weekend, (Sept. 15th & 16th.) I was conveniently present for the Steam and Power show at the Minidoka County Historical Society. :)
In addition to the show, the new Power Museum building was open as well. The Russel steam tractor, recently restored by Mike Christensen and sons was under live steam...

Finally I have stopped working on this one. After 170 hours it is not getting any better. I will turn it to the wall for a few months and then decide if I like it.

You may recall that Herb offered this terrific photo a while back:

Thank you Herb. That was very interesting. Now I know more about steam engines. Interestingly, (at least to me) is that Woburn Mass. We have been there. One of the founders of the city was Ezekiel Richardson who was a descendant of Rebecca Towne Nurse, who was hanged in the Salem Witch trials. He was also an ancestor of my wife Dolores.

Hi, further along with the Weaver 4 ton jack. The lift arm had a totally smashed Zerk fitting on it that I drilled out. The hole measures 1/4 inch with a micrometer but my 1/4 inch Zerk replacement is too loose to fit the hole. What should I do? Would filling with JB weld and drilling it then screwing another Zerk in work?

Hole measures 1/4 . Drill out & tap to fit 1/8 pipe thread. Common zerk.

My EMAIL Address. Just bought one of those bronze front wishbone clamp that enables an under-axle wishbone to augment the early and dangerous above axle wishbone. Cost $105 ! But tbay said my email is obligatory. Why ? So they can sell it or send me unwanted ‘specials’?

Regret the delayed response. Nothing significant occurred in Florida. Simply a lot of puffy, dark clouds moving.

The tire on his work wagon looked like this
DSC_0280.JPG
He said none of the local stores had a tire that matched exactly, but he could either get one through amazon and wait 2 weeks (coming from China) or replace all 4 at a cost of $100+. He asked if I had any ideas... I said grab me a couple of pieces of that scrap plywood. This is what I came...

When I was 5 to 7 yrs old, I had a wagon which was built by my grandfather. The wheels were wood with sheet metal wrapped around the diameter which served as a tire. The wagon didn't ride very well, but i didn't know it at a young age,

Pat, I should know the name of that tune! Great jam. Thanks Eric!
I grew up listening to old-time music jam sessions at home a couple times a year. Aunt and uncle along with relatives sometimes, mom on the spoons... Don't disturb the microphone recording it! Aunt Kay had a better voice than Suzy Boggess.
GR, it's too darn fast for square dancing....

I picked up a January 1959 Popular Mechanics magazine at the Lemay Marymount car show and auction today.
Thought this quiz was interesting.
I’ll confirm the correct answer (according to the magazines page 268) if anyone figures it out.

Well, they were correct, it's not a Ford top !
But they sure missed the boat identifying the car !
I hope they did a better job on the fish eggs.

I was impressed by the 1906 Compound car at Harrah's many years ago. It's engine operated one of its cylinders from the force produced by exhaust gases from the two explosive cylinders. The result was a reduction in noise and saving power . That amazed and amused me.

Just wondering how everyone along the west coast is doing with this storm. So far, no big problems here in Alpine which is about 30 miles inland from San Diego. Just a very gentle rain but steady for about 15 hours. Some gusty winds but not as strong as our annual Santa Anas. However east of here toward the desert areas they have been having some...

North Carolina is used to a lot of rain and structures are built to handle it, usually. However in the desert areas the entire year rainfall average might be 3 inches, so they have dips in the road where it crosses low places and very few bridges. Then when it rains, they get full of water and cars get stuck. Sometimes the pavement washes out and...
