Several Questions: About Hub Caps and Springs

(1) How do you remove the hub caps on wire wheels? I have applied penetrating oil and am waiting a day or so.
(2) Do you paint the entire individual spring leaf (prime and top coats) and then apply the slip coat or do you apply the slip coat to the bare metal contact surface?

Note. If you do not paint the leafs and elect to paint them with slip paint, be sure to paint both sides of the unexposed areas of each leaf instead of just the bottoms. Jim Patrick

I don't think it was associated with the switch. Sitting in the garage running on battery, there was no voltage on the mag post. If it's the switch, I've got more than one problem.

Around here they are lined up at gas pumps.

Pilot stations have plenty of gas and diesel, they have a large terminal in Knoxville and a large fleet of trucks and there is a Colonial terminal here, gas is flowing but it only goes about five mph so it will take about two weeks to fill the system.

The later version was a better cover probably because it was made from one piece of metal by looking at it. Ford must have had a parts supplier or maybe it was Ford who developed a process where the starter cover could be extruded from one piece of metal. I’m guessing but it would seem that way. I’ll bet it took less time to make and Ford would...

I don't have a key, and the part of the latch that would move with the key, is missing. Is there a way to fix this without replacing the entire latch?

My friend Bill is helping another friend with a 16 front axle. Took the spindle off and found this previous repair to the lower threads. Looks like it was worn almost through.
Anyone else seen such a creation ?

They were cool in 1908; the coolest thing. Even cooler in 1915, but by the mid 20s they were the ugly duckling of the automotive world.
Ford was a lot of things, but his biggest contribution to society was to break the paradigm: You can have it cheap or good, but not both.
He gave us both.

Flapping Top Straps

I have a '26-7 roadster. The top is in good shape and looks smooth and tight. There is little or no noise from the top going down the highway 35-50 mph UNLESS there is a crosswind. If there is much crosswind, the flat straps that run inside the top flap furiously and make a nasty racket. Is there any good way to prevent this short of lowering the...

It's fun to drive, regardless of the popping and flapping, but it's SO much nicer without it. There's a lot less motion in the rear curtain, too. The car started by itself after I put the slats in. I think it's happy with them.

For those of you who get up to speed in your T. How far do you actually move the throttle lever? A couple of notches, half way, all the way? I still haven't shifted into high, so that is why I am asking. Just planning ahead. Thanks..Tommy

I don't notice a lot of change in the engine with the position of the spark lever except it does run better in about the middle position than all the way up (retarded for starting.) Follow the general guidelines in the chart, especially remembering to retard the spark when climbing hills where the engine starts to lug a bit. You'll notice that for...

I just received my top for my 1911 touring last week and I also received the 4 pieces of top bows either. I'm ready to start trying to install the top. I don't know if someone could send me some measurements of the height of the top bows and also couple pictures how you set-up the way to install the top as well please? As I see, I have to fit the...

I just acquired a Ford model TT truck. Trying to figure out what year it is. The engine number is 3230255.I found a list that says that engine was manufactured in July 1919. Here are some pictures. Will try to get more pictures tomorrow if the weather is better.

Dwight,
There is lots of good information about the USA production Ton Trucks posted above.
Note with over 15,000,000 T's produced all over the world there were several variations depending on when and where the T's were assembled. Ford USA did not produce a production closed cab TT with the 1926 -27 style cowl, fenders, or hood. At least one...

Some folks say it is impossible to find reproduction floor mats for the TT truck. And that is probably true. But today when I was in Lowes, I ran across a nice Father's Day Gift.
For $19.21 how could I go wrong?

I just bought a 1925 roadster that had not run in 10 plus years. The first thing I did was a compression test and all 4 cyl were at 25 lbs. I I then did a leak down test and did leakage from both the intake and exhaust but none thru the crankcase. I preperation to do the valves I researched the forum and found a post in 2010 by glenn chaffin where...

The real problem with compression that low is that you cannot create enough suction to suck in any gas charge.
I had a 1950 Ford like that, if it sat long enough (about two weeks) to drain all the oil off the cylinder walls, it could not get any gas to fire.
I had to remove two spark plugs and add a shot glass full of engine oil followed by a...

My first experience pulling an engine for complete rebuild. Have a quick look here:
Lots of lessons learned, a few worth noting.
Lesson #1: Verbal estimates are worthless regardless of experience. Get itemized invoices from similar rebuild work minus personal info
Lesson #2: Don't choose a re-builder who makes parts needed, even you plan to...

The pedals and low speed notch need to be properly riveted to their shafts. Don’t replace the rivets with bolts, roll-pins, or anything else. The method may seem satisfactory at first but WILL cause problems eventually. The first problem is a little bit of lash that wouldn’t be present with a proper riveting. Any lash equals less compression of...

Pound a screwdriver under it and pry? Nope. No go. Clamp on Visegrips to whack with a hammer. Failure. Cut a slot in the end and try to pry it as the photo shows? It's going nowhere. Turn it red and let it cool? I'm afraid that would ruin the axle shaft. Any suggestions?

Good news! Now that it's out, grind a bevel on the bottom edge so next time you can drive a small chisel or wedge under it.

I am trying to decided how to paint the inside of my coupe. The attached photos show the condition of the inside. Was the inside the same color as the body paint?

Highland Green is the color for the Pyroxylin (lacquer) painted closed cars, beginning July 1926. The paint is a light shade of green and is satin in finish. These weren't rubbed lacquer to a gloss, just as sprayed on. Ford didn't want to add hand polishing to this faster way of painting the bodies.
This lacquer paint in Highland Green, was Ford...

I have a 26 rear end in my car and have rebuilt it this winter and have it in very good shape now. However when I go to install the wooden split rim wheels the hub in the brake drum is rubbing hard up against the tin press fit dust cap and distorting it in at least 1/8 inch in. I've tried driving the cap on further but it is down hard and wont go...

The result of a stretch is to have more of the axle out to compensate for worn hub tapers. There are 2 ways to get this result. Buy a longer repop axle or move the axle gear further in. Here's how to stretch an axle.
Axle gear is pressed down. 2 - 1/2 round keys are removed. Key grooves are widened .100 toward the stub. Keys are replaced & axle...

I've wondered and thought about installing the new top I've had for our '21 Touring for about 3 years now. Just never could get up the courage to do it. The instructions I've found online are really poor, as is the written material provided with the tops. My recommendation would be to see if you can find someone familiar with such installations within a reasonable distance and have a pro do it. Short of that, there have been a number of discussions on the subject so I would check the archive.

I've never had my T in a parade but I suspect I'll be asked this year. I've driven my Army Jeep in many, but I just disconnect the front hubs and run in low range - easy! With the T, I'm a little concerned about smoking the low band from repetitive application and release.....what do you do?

That's only one of the Beauties of a Warford. You can drive super slow in underdrive and sometimes idle in high pedal or creep very slow in low pedal and not have to start and stop. I like under and high pedal so your leg doesn't get tired. If your car is properly tuned you can slow to a putt putt putt slow idle which is about a walking pace.

Jim-
It depends on what size of burners you are using. They are rated in cubic feet of gas burned per hour.
Standard burners used on the Model T were .75
1 candlepower = 12.57 lumens
.50 burners put out 18 candlepower x 12.57 = 226 lumens
.75 burners put out 29 candlepower x 12.57 = 365 lumens
1.0 burners put out 45.6 candlepower x 12.57 = 572...
