grease zerk for U-joint grease cup

There are grease cups with grease zerks in them for the U-joint grease cup. Will a standard grease zerk fit, or are these cups modified to accept?
Originally, I used wheel bearing grease for all grease cups, including the large one form the U-joint (sorry... I've forgotten the proper period name for it!!). Now, I tend to use Lucas red hi-tac...

I missed the $300 high speed gear set in the classifieds the other day, but it got me to thinking. How big of a job, time wise and special tool wise it it to change out the gear set?

There is a modern seal that fits in place of the can for the inner felt that works way better. Machining a carrier for a modern seal that replaces the washer inside the outer sleeve is also the way to go if you have a lathe.

1926/7 swivel on the carburetor

So I'm trying to remove the universal joint on the top of the carburetor. I can see that it has screw slots on each side. The slots for the screws look like I need a watchmakers screwdriver to get them out. Is that how you do it. Do the screws just go into the X block?

Ring and Pinion set #1

Set #1, Ford gears.
Pinion gear is as perfect as one would hope to find. Bore and keyway look great, no chipped teeth or pitting. Ring gear has no pitting or chipped teeth although 5 of the teeth show some wear across the tops.
I tried to show the best I could in the pictures.
I don’t know for sure if they were actually a set that were run...

Anyone have some pics of the trunk lid hinges, and how they look when installed? I understand you have to put one on complete, then install the trunk lid, swing it into place, and then install the second hinge assembly. But right now I am trying to find a pic of the hinges, to see what they consist of for the 26/26 Coupe.

What is history on Copper Topped coils vs Brass topped coils?
Should the copper be 'just copper' in appearance? polished? clear coated?
They appear to be less in numbers from what I've seen when collecting 'metal topped' coils.

Anybody ever cheat and add an inline low pressure electric fuel to help out in those instances where a T with an under-seat fuel tank starts to stall on a hill? It wouldn't be run all the time, just turned on when needed. I'm interested in your experiences, good and bad.

If I was going to do this I would install a “swing check” (no springs) in parallel to the pump. Then I would probably have the best of both options!!

Occasionally, it becomes freezing temperature where I live. Recently I've been using antifreeze in my radiator but it has been leaking badly and I am concerned about my pets attempting to consume the drips. Would a 50/50 mix of denatured alcohol and water substitute for antifreeze?

26 Coupe Door Sag-How to Adjust?

My 26 coupe doors sag as much as 1/4 at the door latch. This is unsightly so I want to correct it but thought I would throw this question out to the forum members. How is this adjustment made, such that the doors line up properly and don't sag? My hinges look good and not bent.

According to this diagram, if you tighten the body down at the firewall while shimming just in front of the door hinge column, it will tilt the door forward, closing the gap at the top. I have never done this so, even though it makes sense to me, try at your own risk. Jim Patrick

There is a December 30, 2015 post by Wayne Murray- Anacortes,Wa that shows a engine painted blue. My 1927 couple engine has that color and I think it is probably the original paint. I have seen many posts about engine color but have not seen any about blue . Any comments?

Here is my engine painted with Snyder’s high heat Ford Green engine enamel. I think it is as close as your going to get to the original engine green and I like the look of it. Also, whose to say that the dull green on the engine shown above did not look like the Snyder’s supplied Ford Green, 93 years ago when it was first applied. Jim Patrick....

Thank you all. I have the tool from Scott. Working really well. My NH come from Russ Potter as well. A friend of mine recommended to me the modern one because it avoid to be stuck as the regular needle. But I thought I will keep as is finally with the needle Russ use.

My '24 doesn't have engine splash pans. Do they help much in cool weather, keeping cold air out of the cab... And possibly keeping heat in the engine compartment.... For good or bad?

I run my '10 and '14 without the pans in Florida and have never had a problem with overheating. I think the pans were intended to keep dirt and mud from unpaved roads out of things. That would be especially important for open valve engines. The early cars even had pans around the transmission and mine are sitting on the same shelf alongside the...

Seeking a sanity check on attaching long grain fabric to 26 Tudor wood roof frame. Don't want to do this twice.
1. Is it best to use a tack strip or just nail directly to frame and add hidem over it?
2. Fold fabric over it self to create double thickness with or without tack strip and cover with hidem?

Just a personal ‘trick’ whether I am doing a closed car, or an open one on bows.
I only sink the tacks in halfway until I’m happy with the fit and draw...then once assured I don’t have a pucker...or need just a wee bit more tug by pulling a few tacks for the stretch needed...only then hammer home all the tacks!

Actually, Larry, the cost would be very nearly the same as the 1911 torpedo mats were, which was $425, and we'd need to sell at least 35 to get that price, so I doubt it's gonna happen, at least not by me.

Before I started using the foam to pack my new Buffalo wheels... I had to ship a wheel to Australia. I spent half a day building a crate to support the wheel and prevent damage under the worst of circumstances. Was not an efficient use of time, and there had to be a better way! My great grandmother bought a new Model T touring in 1925. She drove it until 1947 when it was parked in the shed and it's still there. It now belongs to my cousin and hasn't been run in about 10 yrs. He keeps it oiled up and turning over. I believe his son will inherit it. Not for sale.

Hey all, I’m just trying to clear up perhaps a silly and simple question I’ve never really gotten an answer to. I’ve seen people put Gland rings in the manifold first, but I also I see some put them in the block first, which way do you think is the correct way? Does it matter which one they go in first? Thanks for your thoughts.

Dan, the new manifolds vary a bit as well. The thickness of the one piece copper glands allows them to be tweaked to accommodate these differences too.

Attached is a photo of an intake manifold that I have. Gail Rodda's Part Identification Guide description and (poor photos) lead me to believe this is a 13 to early 14 intake manifold. It is an older publication and I am wondering what the current opinion is.

Can i run low head with domed pistons

I pulled off the high head on my 1912 engine today and i noticed the engine is fitted with fully domed piston heads . The domed pistons run approx 1/2 inch above the block deck. If i was to change to a low head could it become a mechanical catastrophe ?

Pressure pack of copper seal, buy from Repco, auto barn or super cheap, or you can use brush on silver frost.
Make sure all your head bolt threads are cleaned out, scratch out the crap in the bottom of them and blow out with air. I also use never seize on the head bolt threads.

I took my completely worn out, used and abused 1921 front axle assembly to the Long Beach T's workshop on Saturday. Tom Leroux dived into it. It is now as good as new with all new Bushings, King pins, Spring perches and Shackles. Tom has all the tools and knowledge to do the job quickly and efficiently.

So I have to replace my taillight. Most of it was missing. I bought a new one from Lang's as well as the three bolts and support plate for the back. The question I have is: Where does the taillight wire come from to connect it? Should there be a hole in the fender or bracket? Does it just come out the back of the car and up the fender?

The early wishbones were prone to bending. My neighbor has just purchased a nice 15 roadster and I was telling him that there was some concern about them. One of the fixes was to install an additional modified under wishbone and tie it to the original. We were looking through the parts books and have not found anything on the fix. Please expand....

I seem to have lost or misplaced two of my inner springs for my RAJO head. I have all the outers, VS 698 54-56 Buick, I believe will work, but short 2 on the inners.
Any ideas for the inners, will buy all 8 if needed.

I pulled the valve cover on my speedster, it has a 30 head, same exact spring, ie wraps, OD and spring dia. No inner spring. Along with all the above inputs,......problem solved.

I would like to order some spare nuts and bolts here in Germany .
The vendors (e.g. at the 'bay') offer hardware with UNC and UNF.
Do I understand it right that for the Ford I need the UNC type (number of threads = 20 per inch) ?

Jeorg, the part you show is not a typical example of nut/bolt sizes. 7/16 is the thread size but the brass hex on the grease fitting is smaller than the usual nut used on a 7/16 bolt. It is a thin walled pressing. As such, it should not be used as a locknut on your fan shaft.

Driveshaft housing on my current touring is a tapered tube.
Driveshaft housing on my bare chassis is stepped .

Later production cars after around about 1924 used the step design but not all. Just a Ford design change for cost I guess. Ford did the same thing with the Model A tubes having differences over the production.

Just was catching up on some reading yesterday and re-read the article by Jay Klehfoth describing a very detailed model of 1913 Ford. I think there was a follow up article in the next issue too. The model was made by Harry Schoepf who must be a very talented person.

Can i run low head using domed pistons

I pulled off the high head on my 1912 engine today and i noticed the engine is fitted with fully domed piston heads .
The domed pistons run approx 1/2 inch above the block deck. If i was to change to a low head could it become a mechanical catastrophe ?

I run the high dome pistons with a low head on my 13. No problem and hand crank it.
BUT when building it, trial fit with no head gasket (and perhaps some plasticine on the potential “pinch points”) just to be sure of no “interference”!!

I found a 1925 ad on e-bay that shows the Hycoe brake shoes. It seems they were a popular brand of linings in the late 20s era. The bands and linings pictured in the ad are similar to the accessory Rocky Mountain, AC, and other brands of accessory brakes used on Ts in the 20s. I was checking my T before taking a trip and found the wire loose on the spark plug in #3. When I tried to tighten it I found the top post was actually loose (see photo). I applied a little JB weld and it seems to be holding. I let it set overnight and put it in my T before taking a 50 mile jaunt today. So far so good :D

Now the reason for this post is to point your attention to the extra oblong water hole opposite the usual one, both in the center section of the deck. My opinion on why the hole on the driver/left side of the engine should be blocked off is for proper cooling.
If you notice the exhaust valve arrangement, there are two exhaust valves side by side in the center. That will be the hottest point of the block and need the best cooling possible.
Now notice where the cooled water enters the block....

My soon to be Centerdoor chassis came with accessory APCO ball connections.
So did my current touring chassis.
The only items I replaced is the spring, cup and cotter pin. The screw adjustment is original and in perfect condition

According to the current Model T Ford reference book, Model T Ford, McCalley, the Model T made its first appearance 27 September 1908.
My question, what constitutes the first Model ? Is a Model T the chassis and running gear, less a body? Or is a Model T a complete car appearing with Model T running gear and a body?

So I gapped my Mag Ring and mad a video of how my gages fit. It has to be no closer than .025 and no bigger that .040. You can see that there are a few contacts that are a tight .025 thousandths. Will this be ok? The gage fits it's just tighter than some of the other areas.

What would the paint color been called that is like an olive drab used on a very late '27 touring car. For all I can find it is the original color of the car. George

I’m in need of a VR / cutout for the Coupe that I bought last month. I would take a diode cutout for now, if that’s all I can get my hands on. I guess new VR production is on hold for a while?

Is it my impression or Model A and T prices are way down ? i was looking to buy a 1930 Model A business coupe , original , offered at $ 7 k thinking that it was a good price but now i see one at teebay that had NO offers at $7k. And here was a Center door, usually the most valuable model T offered at $7k.

Here is a photo of the hardware I removed from my ‘24 coupe. This was quarter window on the passenger side. I have a couple questions. Is this all the hardware? I was recently given a pair of E & J 666 headlights that are pretty beat up but mostly complete. Lots of small dents and a few tears in the brass. Are there any specialists out there who could restore them for me? Are they rare enough to be worth restoring? Does anyone have any idea of how many actual assembly points there were at the Highland Park plant during the Model T era?
As closely as the Ford Motor Company organized things, there MUST be a list somewhere of each assembly station, what they did at that particular point, and what order each assembly station maintained in the general assembly...

I know this has undoubtedly been discussed before, and I know too hot a plug can cause pre-ignition, and too cold a plug will not self clean, but when using a 14 mm plug in an iron cylinder head, is using too hot or too cold a plug dangerous in a Model T engine? What was the reason for the worm gear drive in the TT?
Weren’t the actual axle shafts the weak part?
Is there an advantage to putting a TT rear on a speedster?
Curious if it was a locking diff for bad roads/farm fields or slipped like the standard t diff?

I believe the worm was used due to two main considerations. Firstly, one of metallurgy of the time. Worm drives are a lot stronger and easier to make than a heavy duty crown wheel and pinion, and weigh much less than a whacking big solid crown wheel.

I have never seen a riveted on bracket on any Canadian sourced cars. As most Canadian sourced cars came with electrical equipment as soon as it was available, I presume the bolt on switch was fitted right from the start

I am still sorting out my 26 Tudor and have tracked down a miss to the #4 cylinder, easy enough. The plug and wire are both fine but when I ran it with the lid off of the coil box I noticed the the #4 coil was really arcing when the points break. The other three barely show any spark. You’ll be fighting a losing battle with those plastic coils. I might suggest getting a refund and getting a good set of rebuilt Ford/KW coils from one of the coil rebuilders.
