What type of tool do you need to measure the size of a 4th main?

I was thinking I should replace the ball cap(4th main) to try to reduce leaking down the drive shaft. It appears that you can get 4 different sizes of ball caps. However, the part of the cap that is babbitted is about 2 1/2 inches inside the hogshead. How do you measure that far inside? Do they make a special micrometer or caliper? Or do you check...

I was advised to try using tapered feeler gauges to see how the fit was. I was able to slide the 0.004 feeler gauge between the 4th main and the tail shaft. I had to work to get the 0.005 feeler gauge between them. That seems to be within...

I would appreciate some guidance how to remove a 1927 coupe body from the frame. I want to remove it to be able to repaint the frame. The T has not been run for many years.

In my case I was restoring the car so I pulled of the fenders and running boards so I could straighten and repaint the fenders individually. I removed the spare tire carrier so I could roll out the chassis from under the body. The spare tire holder is attached to the frame and was to tall to clear the back of the body since I had to roll the...

Hi,
I put a new Clevis in after changing the bands, pivots, supports, and slow speed notch on the transmission. I've read a few guides on how to adjust the Clevis which is '1/16th short or play'. Problem: my new Clevis which is the same dimension as the old one isn't short enough by just a little bit. Most comment that the Clevis isn't long...

Hi as pictured the top front axle bushing was replaced but it sticks out into the spindle space. Won't that interfere with the spindle going back in? Just sand it down? Also the bushing is just slightly too snug for the new spindle bolt, just ream it out with a reamer?

These were inserts that were swedged and brazed until sometime in the mid teens. Then they were inserts that were swedged and NOT brazed for a few more years. Then they were changed simply to a hole that was punched inwards and the “bent in” steel hole was threaded.

I use the same oil in my Ruckstell (75w90) in my oil can. A couple drops on either side of the roller and a smear of dielectric grease on the contact faces. Vulcanising may well be a practice no longer compatible with modern tubes. Different rubber compounds/substitutes require different approaches. Most repairs made today use stick-on patches, and this includes stick-on replacement valve stems. You would need to ascertain that both the patches and the tube are compatible with vulcanising.

I straightened an original Ford breather cap yesterday, and couldn't get it to fit well. Upon looking inside the hole, the casting was quite rough. Initially I used a half round file to knock down the high spots, but it wasn't satisfactory. Ultimately I used a brake cylinder hone with good results. I've never encountered a problem like this before.
Last post
Larry: I've had straightened caps fit too tight too. The cylindrical piece of the cap needs to be loose in the tabs that attach it to the fluted cap top so the split sleeve can compress slightly when you insert it. If those tabs are crimped down tight the cap may be difficult to insert and may actually be loose b/c the sleeve cannot spring back...

First post
Quick question, on the 26 sediment bowl the valve should face down to get the flow of fuel. There is a little hole inside on the shaft and that should face down correct.
Last post
The valve handle should point down, however, it is possible to install the handle 180 degrees and have the handle point up when on. So if you get no fuel with the handle pointing down, try pointing up. If neither will allow fuel to flow, you have a blockage elsewhere in the fuel system.

I see there's a 12V Halogen Headlight upgrade for Model A's where they give you a new reflector, bulbs, & hardware. I was wondering if that kit would work for my 26 Coupe Headlights? Are the A-Bone reflectors the same size as a T reflector? Anybody try this kit in their T Headlights?

Have an A used the halogen kit. Not worth it. The best way to improve light is Aluminum Oxide reflectors.

Ross Lilleker's mailbox.jpg I had the pleasure of going to Ross Lilleker's shop in College Station, Texas yesterday. Ross has quite an operation there and is quite busy. He had no less than 10 or 12 Model Ts and a whole slew of engines and probably half a dozen workers. I took a double take on his mailbox as I was leaving and snapped this photo.

My 21 Touring seems to be pulling to the left. I intend to check the toe end this weekend and have read previous posts about it. Seems that folks have different ideas about the cause of pulling to one side. Don’t think the axle is bent but would out of adjustment toe end cause it?
Last post
For pulling to the left, I would check to see that the left wheel bearing is not too tight and dragging. I just had a wheel bearing get real hot on a car that I bought recently. Turned out the previous owner had installed the spindles on the wrong side and the left bearing had tightened up so tight that the inner race was spinning in the hub.

Bob, I try to fit them as best I can, and note how much more I need to be able to get them into place. Then I use a die to add that much thread to one end. This enables that end to go further through the eye and lets me fit the other end. Purists might not appreciate the extra bit of thread.

I have run one like it. This style does line up with the Ford hot air pipe. The valve at the bowl is an enriching needle for starting or as needed for richer mixture. As far as performance, my OP is they mirror the Strombergs but not as common.

Replacing the exhaust manifold on my 1920 Centredoor with a reproduction from Lang's. I have the insert rings and the gaskets are the copper clad gaskets, not the copper rings.
What torque should I use on the clamping bolts? Don't want to do too much and snap them, and of course, not tight enough brings its own set of problems.
Any tips or...

Natalie Weaver did a wonderful job editing and helping me put the second part of the story together. Part 1 covered the beginning of Ford’s racing program in 1910, when HF told lead engineer Joe Galamb he wanted a racer that would beat the fastest racer in the world at that time, the Blitzen Benz. Part 2 covers the 1911 race season, culminating in...

I don't have a part number since I bought a kit from one of the vendors. But, go to etrailer.com and search for a universal converter, not a model-specific converter. They have the 4-in, 3-out converters that don't require a 12V power...

Joseph,
That is an interesting read! I wonder if the family has any photos and/or documents from that period (1903-1910).
Bud,
Just dropped off a few things at the shop where the racer is. It’s almost together and ready for a test drive. Hopefully within a week or two. Hope all is well there.

Look for one of the new ones that has an anti-sulfation or Recondition feature.
Repeated heavy discharges and recharges will kill a battery that is not made for them, very quickly.
Take a look at the CTEK brand. Made in Sweden, and has excellent reviews.
I bought a CTEK one for my motorcycle batteries, and now I use it instead of my regular...
