If you have a Ford manufactured prior to 1916, be sure to use a jamb nut for the adjustable ends. I just ran across one from one of my cars, where the throttle adjustment is barely holding on.

This photo has appeared on ebay, it shows women and men working on Model T's at what appears to be an emergency assembly line during or after the first world war.
Any one have an idea as to what is the story beind this? Possibly Model T Ford ambulances being rescued for reuse, what country might the soldiers be from?

I have recently acquired the tools and machinery to pour and size babbit, I am not professing to be an expert by any means.
However I have made some observations, it seems that the older engines I have disassembled which appear to have OEM Babbitt. I only “assume” these to be OEM, for example they would typically have cast iron pistons....

That sounds reasonable. But I cannot imagine a circumstance where the cap would need to be filed .050”
Maybe over the course of many refits ?
Exactly. So IMHO, no reason for a rebuilder to 'defect' a rod due to a shaved cap.
Failures in babbitt in todays rebabiting jobs could be because of how todays Model T owners treat the T engines. The...

My car has mirrors mounted to the upper door hinges. They seem useless, I can barely focus them and they dont keep the setting after a few miles due to vibration. I always use the new ones in transmissions builds, especially if the customer requests a turbo or other modern lining clutch. They are not that expensive and good insurance.

I had a 1914 speedster with a spring like that or very similar. I really did not notice anything different than normal. But it was a light car. I think mine was a Longleaf brand.
After looking closer to your photo/ad I see the ad shows a double-set of springs. Mine was a single spring as shown in the photo above

A rear wheel hub puller I think, you agree?
One shockie
I think the 4 brass fittings are for a wind deflector, maybe not Model T

Disconnect the rods & check your clutch linkage settings. The brake lever must stay all the way forward when driving or you risk burning/slipping the clutch. The rods act as too long. Since you added aftermarket brake shoes, it could be the lining is too thick not allowing enough cam lever free play.

What can be done is it registered and a tag issued in Alabama. Then you should be able to get a title in any state.

If you look closely on the outside there should be some register marks where wheel lugs held the rim to felloe. The number of marks, and the position of the valve stem in relation to them may help others to identify it. I have no idea.

I wonder how many T guys are in the dark about using original valve stems. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of talking with a well know tire guy, and he was totally in the dark about how those early valve stems are mounted to the tubes!
The best information I've seen is from the Model A clubs. Those guys really get in there and do their research.
Last post
Schrader 777 is the stem that Ford used. But none of the repop covers are made to fit them. All the metal stem tubes currently available use the larger size (Schrader 724 & 725), so the available new hardware is made to fit those. I'm cheap enough to buy rubber-stem Hartford tubes and install my own metal stems.

VIDEO: Model T Q&A, Answering Your Questions
by
ModelTMitch » Sat Sep 07, 2024 6:57 am
Q&A videos seem to be all the rage on people's YouTube channels right now, so I thought I'd try a slice of the pie, with a Model T flavor!
After trawling through some of the comments on my channel, I've whittled them down to 15 questions and put them into a video for you all.
If you have any comments or questions you'd like to ask and possibly...

turtle deck mounting question

I am getting ready to mount my turtledeck onto the roadster bed behind the seat bucket. Should I put a layer of felt paper (maybe felt roofing paper) under the turtledeck? What was used originally if anything?
Thank you,
Craig

Leather washers- refer to this post:
I don't know if leather washers were used all the way through the 1922 model year but I presume they would be correct for your 1914 roadster.
I have an unrestored 1917 roadster and I removed trunk in order to straighten out the sheet metal and there were no leather washers. I also have an NOS or early...

"Overcenter" Feeling in Steering

Hello everyone, I recently went through my front axle and refreshed everything up: new tie rod bolts, spindle bolts, bushings, some ball joint shims (car already had some, I only replaced them and didn't add more), wheel bearings, the works. Didn't replace any large parts (e.g. tie rods, pitman arm), just cleaned up what was on there. During the...

Early this year, I had a similar problem with my 23 touring. I just could not keep the car in the middle of the lane. Everything looked good until I noticed that the steering column box to the frame was loose. The mounting bolts were pinned but loose. The wood must have shrank. The bolts were tightened and pinned. Now the car steers like it...

Holley G question

Chris Bamford » Sun May 08, 2022 12:45 pm
First post
I have this mid-teens(?) Holley G on a spare engine that apparently powered a saw bench way back when.
My 98-year-old Model T friend was over the other day and opined that it was a desirable unit for my newly-rebuilt '26 Touring engine (Z head, bigger valves, advanced timing gear, TW timer, well-balanced, hi vol intake manifold).
I read up a bit...
Last post
RW - the Z is called a high compression head but it's only a slight increase. The chamber design should result in more efficiency and as you pointed out, increase the compression ratio to around 6. Here is info on the Z
Another big performance improvement is to install a Scott Conger full-flow valve in your NH. There are discussions about it...

Great commentary Wayne !
Thing is, acetylene lamps (and oxy-acetylene welding) were fairly new technology, only something like 20 years old in 1915. The magneto powered electric headlamps were pretty sketchy, while, if you really had to rely on them for a lot of night driving over bad roads, acetylene was dependable and very bright. I recall...

After constructing WWI ambulance project to the Ford plans, my overall height was 81 and the top is permanently attached. So, no issues until I start to look for enclosed trailer to transport and store this thing. Seems most standard enclosed trailers are not tall enought for most Model T's unless the top is lowered and the windshield is removed...

Someone also suggested the white plastic wall panels like in restrooms that will just glue or tack up in place and provide a nice, clean, bright, and washable surface. Its a little tight in there on either side with the ambulance loaded and having a surface to slide against kinda appeals to me.

Fall is here. Time to cram in every touring opportunity. So yesterday the wife and I decided it was time to give Stanley our '26 Fordor some exercise. Nice drive around the country and went to Huron, next town over to to go walk their pier. You can barely see the lighthouse in upper right FAR background!

One time my wife and I were in Colorado. We saw a very small cloud over the highway. The car in front of us was a convertible with the top down. It got rained on but we didn't get any rain. Clouds are funny that way.

24 coupe I dont know how to identify the carb for you guys but i assume its standard.. when i turn on the fuel petcock and allow fuel to flow into the carburetor, it starts leaking (with the engine not running) and drips once every four seconds. i think the leak is coming out of the air intake area but its hard to tell as there is one of those...

Apple cider vinegar I feel is better than just vinegar. Works really well on rust. Soak for a day and wire brush it off, then a very light coat of oil to prevent flash rust. I've been using it for years. Also try electrolysis. There are lots of videos online on how to do that. I've also used it for a long time on larger parts. Removes all rust...

Heavy rods???

Any reason to save heavy rods? Just stripped down another engine with a set in it . Got at least a bucket full.
Last post
The issue with the early heavy rods is that it takes a heap more babbitt to re-build, making the bearing thick compared to the better machining of the later rods.

I don't believe I've ever seen a newly manufactured clutch/brake pedal extension. Just old ones from the era.

I was going to drive modern to the Old Car Festival but fate intervened. Yesterday I hit a curb that flattened two tires and bent the wheels. After a night in the hospital for observation, I'm home now. The docs think dehydration combined with too much blood pressure medicine and affected my driving. I will miss seeing old cars and old friends,...

Is Phil Minos 1912 touring car available to be seen and photographed by the public?
Last post
According to Phil’s website, it’s a 1911 with fore doors that were retrofitted, rather crudely, to the the car. However, the car was built in November of 1911, so by Ford's records, it's a 1912.

Great seeing and speaking with you again Tom. Yes, it was a great tour. Chillicothe is very nice town. I've driven through it several times, on the way to past Jamborees, but never noticed the very vibrant business district, crammed with nicely restored vintage store fronts and buildings. Also, some beautiful old homes! What a nice town!

Hello everyone,

My grandfather had found this car in a field in the 60's. When I got it, It had not been started since the 90's. I have gotten it running and...

Hi Gunnar, Welcome to the hobby! Good to have you on board.
Best advice? -- 'Ask' :-)
Plenty of wise words given above, working through the full steering column and gears should be next to do, then the rear axle. If the rear perches are worn like the front they need to be fixed too.
There is a wealth of advice to come :-) but start where you...

Tight drive shaft bushing…

I am working on the rear end build and installed a new top-hat bushing on the front of the tube. It fit over the shaft before it went in but installing it has squeezed it down enough that the shaft won’t go in at all. I would ream it, but I would think a straight adjustable reamer would tend to hog on the grease groove. I used a 1 inch drill as a...

I believe just the driveshaft was held in a vice, and the tool used on the sleeve on the bare driveshaft. The tool yielded before the sleeve would let go.
