We are almost to the end of out tour of Italy. We have driven the whole length of Sicily and mainland Italy. About 1500 miles so far. There have been no more major mechanical issues with the cars. I have put in some oil and adjusted the Rocky Mtn brakes on our car. Also secured a window crank that came loose. We have seen Rome, Pisa, Florence, and...

Electrical/Timer issues

After installing a new timer and roller, and a new wire harness, I am getting a buzz on 1,2 and 4.
3 is not buzzing.
The commutator is properly wired.
Connections to the corresponding coils are correct.
I had a short installing the timer, which prompted me to buy a new harness.
An exposed, frayed wire may have caused it or an engine pan bolt that...

Not sure what year you got, but reuse the spring contacts in Coilbox. If you bolts that hold them in are steel, replace them with some brass ones from an earlier car. Use electrical lead solder and solder the contacts to the heads of the brass screws.
Makes a big difference.

There are many questions about the advent of autonomous trucks. One of the most obvious has always been who, exactly, will take care of a driverless truck if there are no humans on board?
With EVs and autonomous vehicles now the Thing , are drivers of vintage motor vehicles any more safer on the roads and at intersections?

Think there needs to be some definition about what a driverless car is/isn't and what is defined as an autonomous vehicle. WHY DO T CRANKS BREAK BEHIND #1 ROD?
by
speedytinc » Mon Sep 18, 2023 11:51 am
First post
Its generally understood that a crank that breaks around or behind #3 is from a crank case misalignment. Correct?
Why do they break behind #1 rod throw?
I have broken 3 cranks in my T career. All broke behind #1
First was from a professionally rebuilt motor. The radius's were ground near square. Break started in the sharp corner. Obvious issue....
Last post
There may be a connection with the fact that Rod #2 gets less lubrication that the others.
I have had three #2 rods begin making a lot of noise before anything breaks.
When the engine and then the crankshaft is removed, it was still saved by grinding and polishing the #2 surface area.

Does anyone know what this fits? Looks like 23/25 sides but both upper and lower frames swing. I got for my 25 Canadian RHD roadster, the top post mounts for the top are not right. I have found the right windshield and need to sell this one, but what does it fit?
Could it be an earlier Canadian windshield? Email me at address in pictures. Thanks...

For Martynn
Here are some pictures of Holley G RHD carburetors for information. Here in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, Canada, we drove on the left of the road up until 1923. So, the standard Canadian Fords shipped to us were RHD. I sometimes get a bit carried away trying to pick up any RHD parts that I see when scouting for T parts. I got a bit...

Part 3
Kingston RHD example. Here are a couple pictures of a Kingston RHD. Similar to the Holley the arm is designed for the front to back movement. But it does appear to be a slightly longer arm than on the RHD Holleys that I have. It also doesn’t have Detroit or USA anywhere on the carburetor.

Years ago, a friend showed up with a pair of lifting bars, which are either pictured in the Ford Service book, or the service bulletins. There is a long one that is 50 1/2 . and a short one which is 39 . I assume the short one is for cars with starters. They are solid steel, 1 1/2 dia. with a 3 ring on the end.

Driving the other day I noticed a knock when advancing the spark, so before going on to more complicated things I thought I’d check the easy stuff, and the first thing was the fan.
Good news is the knock disappeared after taking it off, so after inspecting the fan pulley I noticed a slight bit of endplay. It’s one of those newer replacements that...

The little one's I thought were for the brass hubs, but they are too small.

If interested in an HCCT for a display of early automotive technology, hope you find what you are looking for.
If interested in tuning Model T coils for equal and consistent firing time, an ECCT is a more cost effective tool better suited for that purpose. More information available here: www.modeltecct.com

There is or was a place in southern PA where I took them about 7 years ago. Can't remember where.

I agree with Allan. Just don't do it. Eventually the brass will tarnish underneath the coating and upull have a heck of a mess. I actually enjoy polishing my brass, usually every 4-6 weeks. Radiators more often mainly cause they're so easy.

I have played with the idea a good bit and will be building what I consider a 10-12 tourabout. A 6 inch drop is about all you want. Beyond that if you get a flat you will be putting your motor on the ground. A touring body won't work because the lower you go the flatter you sit which makes the rear seats useless. I also don't have TikTok but could watch it. I'm assuming that the car is front-wheel drive. I don't see how it could work with a Hotchkiss-type driveline.

I have a fresh Extra Quality brand 30X 3 1/2 tube. It's very nice quality, and I used them ten years ago when I restored my 1925. It is made in USA. It has a Dill rubber valve stem. Why aren't they still available?
Last post
I had a talk with Blockley a while back, and they aren't interested in offering their tires with a rubber valve stem. The metal ones they used are not what Ford offered. They are way too big, even though they will work. Reproduction people now days don't do the research needed to make the product correctly.

Does anyone have a photo or a pattern of a Gallivan head gasket? When I purchased The Flying Dutchman Gallivan powered 1915 model t roadster I got several new overhead gaskets but not sure if they are for the Gallivan.
A photo, or drawing would be very helpful. Also have a couple of questions regarding oil pressure and routing of oil lines....

Looking at what I presume is a Jackrabbit replacement, in time, the friction linings fail. According to hearsay, this clutch pack has probably over 20,000 miles. I wonder where the lost clutch facing went ?

What John said above is true, but only if the last disc to be installed is a large disc. The last disc in needs to rotate with the brake drum/ driven plate assembly. It is a common mistake to over look this detail if you don't fully understand how the clutch pack should be installed. All those drive plates with the push ring holes worn out is the...

At first I thought they were Wind Wings but they seem to have tinting between the layers of glass. So maybe sun visors. Heavy nickel plated. Approximately 6 by 16 inches. 20230916_103139_copy_480x1040.jpg

What's the Secret to a Quiet T?

What is the secret to a quiet running T? I recently had notice that my friend's T was way quieter than mine, but he could not tell me why. Can someone enlighten us folks that would like to not hear so much noise coming from the exhaust pipe area? Even when I replaced my exhaust pipe and muffler on my 24 touring, there wasn't much difference. What...
Last post
The same was said by Charlie, the local Harley dealer. He and his brother would go down to the rail yard to watch them unload the new Ts when they were kids. He said it was the sweetest sound ever but in a few weeks, they sounded like heck.
I like the sounds a T makes no matter how nice or how loud.
I have both.

Is it still planned? Are dates announced yet?
Or has the Tulare Pre-War Meet been permanently ended?
Thanks for any input1

I just saw a news report yesterday that Lake Tulare is increasing in size instead of receding. The flooding this year caused the swap meet to be canceled. This winter maybe just as bad as last winter, so it's hard to say. Perhaps someone in that area can shed some light on next years event.

My T has an exhaust manifold that appears to be for an auxiliary heater:

The shroud is missing and there are no holes in the floor to duct the heat if the shroud was there. My question is: are there any advantages or disadvantages of running this exhaust manifold? I know it seems to radiate heat rather well under the hood.

My brass horn mount decided to break on me and I'm looking for options. I've never soldered brass but I'm willing to give it a try. What you see here is what I'm left with. The stem snapped and the brass cap is missing. Do I need to de-solder the remainder of the stem? Lang's horn mount doesn't seem like it would fit this horn.
How would you go...

One hint a VERY skilled jeweler demonstrated for me when he soldered a brass lamp I brought to him, that had age cracking:
The VERY FIRST thing he did was run a very fine saw blade down the crack, right to the bottom. He stated it would NEVER be successful to just silver solder the crack itself without first doing the saw blade maneuver. The...

Tim, the C over H mark was common on the forgings on my Canadian sourced 1915 model T. It was suggested it was forged by Cleveland hardware. The TW mark is likely earlier, a Transue Williams forging. As far as I know, they are interchangeable, so unless you are anal about such details, there should be no problem in using either, and swapping it...

That sounds promising.
It does. Its a nice engine, it just got water/anti-freeze in it and I had to pull it down to clean it. It was built by an Elderly man and I think once they got it together and found out how slow it was, it barely got use as the Depot Hack was way more usable. Maybe I'll luck out and get it back together this weekend.

A friend has a 1920 Roadster that he has spent the past year getting into good running condition. Back in May he took it on a tour that encountered heavy rain. Plastic coil box replacement kits are a no-brainer for someone with experience. To the new Model T owner the symptoms a shorted coil box produces can leave them totally flumoxed. I would recommend to any new owner that they be proactive and rebuild the coil box if it hasn't already been done. Two things to remember - once the carbon track is...

Hi all, my T consistently develops a puddle of oil (?) below the starter after taking it for even short drives (2+ miles). I'm thinking I need to change out the gaskets or, worst case replace the starter. What do you think?
Last post
Model Ts do not like thick oil, and overfilling one with oil will assure leaks and other issues. Ford recommended keeping the oil level halfway between the upper and lower petcocks. The oil capacity is usually given as one gallon, but in most cases when changing oil, 3 quarts will have oil above the lower petcock and 3 1/2 quarts will bring it to...
