I have an original Ruckstell book in front of me, and it says to use Gargoyle Mobiloil C . Does anyone know the modern equivalent of this is? No guesses allowed!
Last post
I mentioned the Seagrave because it was talking about DRIVE LINE components (of which there were a lot of on those trucks), NOT motor oil. Their group did the research, and found Gargoyl C to be - wait for it - whatis being sold as 600W. (sound familiar?), 600W cylinder oil has an actual viscosity equivalent of 275. If Ruckstell says use Gargoyl...

Hello guys,
Picked this up from a friend yesterday. Not labeled, and I've spent hours comparing it to others. Not sure if I'll actually run it but it's interesting to me. No rotor, distributor cap I have with it looks a lot like a early 20s Delco type. Anyone recognize it?
Last post
Thanks for the input guys. I compared it to a tornado brand, similar but not the same. Better casting that's for sure than the Tornado. Yeah the gears are a little odd compared to other distributors. The cap on this one looks almost identical to a '22 Chevy cap. Going to order a rotor for one of those as well and see if it works in this one.

Clutch meltdown

Saw a new one today. Someone worked on this 1913 engine and used the best of everything, including a new brake drum. So far, so good, but they neglected to install the replaceable shoes on the clutch lugs. Clutch bound up and it was nearly impossible to crank the car. I hope I can save the expensive new drum by putting on the shoes.
Last post
The new modern small trans brake drums are made in the pattern of the late '25 which did have shoes, that were later same on the large 26-27 trans brake drums. Good idea for the new drums so they can be reused if the clutch discs wear the lugs.
These are J&M brand new.

Tire pump

by
Will_Vanderburg » Tue Jul 04, 2023 2:05 pm
First post
Spent some time refurbishing my tire pump. Cylinder all smooth and shiny.
Forgive the modern hose clamps. I cleaned the hose to tube connection. It was clogged tight. It pumps air and does inflate a bicycle tube. There’s no ball bearing in it. And I didn’t remove the valve plunger.
What color should the base be? Right now it’s red oxide.
Last post
I believe the tire pump would be more efficient with a check valve at the pump end of the hose. That way, you would not lose the small volume of compressed air in the hose with every stroke.

My thoughts too, Rich. A little bleed past the cam seal is good for a roller timer I'm sure. I'm running a TW, which has forgiven the lack of a better seal, but it probably would be happier with a drier environment.

Original type timers require frequent oiling for lubrication and to prevent gumming.

The car should warm up quicker and have better driveability in cold weather or in cool, damp weather with the heat pipe in place. Having mislaid my priming rod I need to make a new one and I have a question about the length. Is the length listed in the Parts Price Lists the overall length of the rod and knob or just the rod? If it is the length of the rod, is it the overall length of the rod or the length from the bottom of the threaded section to the end of the rod (bend)?...

Part of the fun of keeping an old car is being able to make needed parts for it. Touring and maintenance have kept me busy and I haven't had to make anything lately. I thought some parts I made years ago might be fun to post now.
When the nice repro E&J burners were only $85 I decided to try to make some from scratch. Here is the post from 2012:...

That's why Michigan Ave is split east and westbound now.

I don't suppose cast iron pistons in oversizes are an option if some benighted soul wished to use them in a rebuild ? - asking for a friend
Last post
I think the reason why Ford had so many different and odd sizes of pistons, is that you could hone your cylinder to a piston size instead of boring it. That would easier to do especially if you didn't have a boring machine. I did that with one motor I had. Also that would make sense for motors found with different sized pistons.

Last post
I just went through that on a T that I've owned for over 60 years. I removed the front wheels to do this, because the wheel gave me too much leverage to get an accurate adjustment. The biggest problem is lining up the castle nut on the spindle bolt to get the cotter pin in. I've found trying a different castle nut can make adjustment easier.

Disk brakes have basically no clearance between the pad and the rotor. The rubber seals on the pistons will retract the pads just enough so the wheel will spin freely with little to no drag. It is like this with cars and motorcycles as well. If the pads remain tight to the disk, the master is not releasing pressure and has issues. Be sure the...

If you have a later manifold clamp in your stash, it will fit opposite way around, and you will still get full thread engagement. You can then replace it at your leisure.

Was that done in the factory in addition to the rivets?
Thanks in advance!
Ed

Here’s a photo of a pan after it was cleaned up and getting straightened on a pan jig.
There are others on the forum showing different flowed on brazing jobs on pans. Would a Rolls Royce factory do it like this? Probably not. It’s a reminder of Ford saving time and money and as many T’s were being built it’s a wonder they did the job that they...

Holley G bowl - brass or steel?

While working on a leaky drain valve on a Holley G, I started wondering - for mid 1915 should the bowl be brass or steel?
Bruce's Black book, the Judging Guidelines, forum posts and the MTFCA Encyclopedia all offer different answers. None of the early factory photos show one clearly, nor does the Price List of Parts for 1915 and 1916.
I have...

Thanks for the responses. Kerry, the 1915-16 parts lists are mystifying - nothing current but a very pretty 1913 two-screw Holley illustration in compensation.
Steve, would like to hear more about problems with brass bowls. I'd just assumed the change to stamped steel was just part of a larger shift to steel components.
The car's former owner...

I have done many of these with this press, been a while though. This one will not go “home “ at the bottom push. It wants to spring back and not lie flat. I have taken some off the angles and a tiny bit off the crush at the hub.
Has anyone ran into this before? There’s no paint or primer on the mating surfaces. I’ve spent all day on this one...

I had actually set it up to do that and thought I had better ask for suggestions before I did it. I was afraid it may be too much side pressure on it.
Thanks Scott

I have been away in England and just got back home.
I've noticed lots of icons in the classified section; an eyeball flashing yellow to red, a ghost face, and a star.
I assume that the flashing eyeball is a warning about the seller, and a star is a good seller, but what is a ghost face; someone who fails to complete the deal?
Thanks for any info....

We are talking about what you would see over in the lefthand column, where you would see if you have read it or not. This only seems to be in the classifieds. There are several different symbols used, below is just a sample.
I believe I explained where those icons come from just above your response. The circle with lines indicate if you read...

I plan on having a glass co put safety glass in my 26 touring windshield frame. I'm using a reproduction frame. Asking for a friend… I swear!😉
He has a ‘15 touring (pre generator block) that apparently needs a water pump. The desire is to get away from magneto lights, and install a charging system and battery. Does anyone have any examples of an alternator and water pump on an early engine? Did you use 1 belt or 2?
Last post
I've run a pump and alternator on a pre-generator car before. Ran it on one belt as well all on the driver side of the engine.

We have had considerable discussion about 6 vs 12 volts and alternators vs generators. I may have a solution. I was watching a Jay Leno's Garage segment on Youtube; the segment was about Jay's '53 Hudson. He showed that he had replaced the old 6 Volt generator with a 6 Volt alternator. It looked like a single-wire GM unit. Jay mentioned that 6V...

I test fields coils for magnetic strength as described with a piece of iron. If magnatec pull stops before the last coil it indicated a short to ground.
Next step is to test the continuity with my armature tester. 120V leads. This usually shows the weak short to ground with a bit of sparking & smoke.

Hi guys,
Yes. I put together the 'bolt chart' during that viral lock down using various sources and an original version done earlier.
I am more than happy to make corrections, please send me a PM with the corrections - AND/OR to fill in missing data.

Ran across this series of cartoons, rather fun to see the automobile changes as recognized back in 1924!
As there are 23 car toons (pun intended ;) ) have to post in a series of 5 at a time, as that is all this forum allows in picture posting. Enjoy!

I noted some front right wheel wobble. I removed the wheel. Bearings are fine. Sighting straight along the length of the spindle from the threaded end, it moves slightly up and down by hand in the Y axis only, and none the X axis or Z axis. Based on comments received, I have ordered the short throttle and chock levers from Lang's. The catalog lists the NH long levers for 1919-25 and the short levers for 1926. I am curious. Why the difference?
Actually the long levers are 20-23 NH. Short levers 23-27 applications. 24 or 25-27 the short choke lever has a dog leg on the lower arm....
