Engine burning oil

I had to work on the transmission of my car, and decided to check the engine.
I checked the pistons, and cleaned the rings, without removing them. I opened the holes in the piston skirt.
The cylinders were looking good, and I did a rapid honing with a 3 stone tool.
Since restart, the engine is smoking and consuming oil like hell !
All cylinders...

New TT Rear Axle Outer Bearing Sleeves

First post
I see the reproduction TT rear axle outer bearing sleeves available from the usual vendors are described as not having a dimple or grease cup hole, so my question is how are people making that work? I do not see myself easily drilling a hole in a hardened sleeve, and adding a dimple is impossible.

Adrian,
Since you are the only TT owner to respond so far, let me ask, what are you using for outer bearing sleeves?

installing a period style battery box

I recently installed a period style battery box in the 1915. Not much info available, so it's mostly guesstimates.
A wood box from a craft store is attached to a wood insert on the rear seat floor. Battery wires pass through drilled holes in the box, wood insert and the reproduction seat pan that came with the car. Cloth wires and flag terminals...
Last post
Nice setup. It looks like it fits in the box, hides the modern cells and makes all the connections. Your box will look great when it's done. Print is a neat approach.
I think the wood box handles are to lift it from a steel battery box. Seems to be normal for battery Fords, not sure of other cars.
Mark, not much by way of battery placement and...

I stripped out repro lug nuts on my '26 wire wheels. Seems lug nuts are some kind of stainless non magnetic alloy that is soft and strips easily. Chrome plating flakes off too, resulting from a very poor plating job.
Nuts stripped out and would not tighten down. Failed at about 30 ft/lbs torque.
Good thing the stud is harder and better quality...

They are a steel-clad wood felloe demountable rim wheel. I suspect that design was used by a few wheel manufacturing companies in the late 1910s to very early 1920s. There were a lot of cars other than Ford that used such wheels as standard equipment, and they came in a variety of sizes.
Most wood felloe demountable rim wheels were steel clad only...

As Tim pointed out, there's one important aspect of trailering the car backwards, and that is besides tongue weight, the trailer being tail heavy.
Even if you take care to load the car so you have at least around 120lbs of weight on the hitch, your weight distribution is very important, and having a tail heavy trailer is not the thing to have in...

That second taper front to rear on the spoke ends makes working on Canadian wheels a piece of cake. Once the outside plate is off, alternate spokes can be tapped off from behind for 1/8 or so, then the next six tapped up to them. Repeat this process until they are driven off the hub. Same process is used to rebuild the wheel. Absolutely no need...

Someone on the Facebook page is asking what this is for, was sleeved around one axle shaft. I got one awhile ago in an estate sale with a bunch of parts. One suggestion was an oil screw. I could see this as a possibility for use with the solid Hyatt rolloers
any ideas?
Last post
I believe my father has a couple NOS on the shelf that he picked-up over 70 years ago.
If one of those screws gets get hung-up in the housing, it can wreak havoc on the axle shaft. When that happens, it can also make it difficult to disassemble the rear end.

How do I remove a stubborn driveshaft stuck in the coupling connecting it to the worm? I removed the U-joint, driveshaft tube, and the two rivets in the driveshaft to worm coupling, but I cannot get a good enough grip to pull the driveshaft out of the coupling, or the coupling from the worm. I have had this carburetor on the car for 2,000 trouble free miles. I had to pull the engine for transmission work. When I re-attached the fuel line, gas began leaking from the throat. I checked the float height and is 1/4'' from the float to the edge of the carburetor (with no gasket in place). I am thinking that it is the fuel float valve that...

Are there shorter tension springs that I could use to get more life from the band linings, specifically the low speed ?
Last post
Tom, I'm a bit puzzled by your question. If your band springs are not allowing you to adjust the bands any further, are they coilbound? If so, the band linings/drums are well worn. Further adjustment may well result in the rivets coming into contact with the drum and scoring it.

Anyone have any experience with this type of gauge and it's operation?

Ford of Canada accessories literature AD714 shows the gauge available as an option.
So, this should of been available for your ancestors down under to put on their Ford.
I think the design of the sender was similar to the 1932-34ish Fords. The gauge itself was a glass tube with a dyed liquid vs the Kirstin which had an air driven needle.

Anybody game for a third annual forum reunion at the Old Car Festival this year? They seem to be better attended every year.
Did someone last year mention a potluck?
Last year I think the agreed on time and place
was about 3pm on Saturday at the far end of the activities field.
Let me know of any interest on this thread.

3:30 is fine. At my age this could be my last, so I'd better be there. :D

Brass Parts Interest

I found a small shop making 1 off brass parts for an antique car, but the parts were expensive! The shop can make the brass gas generators and Holly G brass carburetor bowls. I have access to these 4 gas generators Victor, Cocran, E & J, and John Brown and a steel Holly G bowl that he could use as templates. I will have nothing to do with sales....

Hey there, Victor
ready to cry UNCLE!! ??
I'm glad these guys can do that level of work...seriously! But it's been a rough crowd so far, eh?
it's a nice thing you want to do...good luck to all involved.

The Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles is seeking a single original example of a Fisk Red Top tire for an upcoming exhibition. We understand these were often used on Model Ts in the 1910s/20s.

The interior door panel on my 1923 runabout is falling apart from use. As most of you know it’s a dense black cardstock base covered with a thin textured outer paper skin very much like that used in musical instrument cases, camera bodies etc. There is a oval cutout relief near the lock assembly that is trimmed with a thin steel edge. My question...

They made similar textured cardboard for late Fords and trucks. Some might be similar enough. Worth looking into.

Magneto Battery Charger

Following the discussion about using the magneto to charge battery, why can't a wire resistor of equal cold resistance of a 1156 12.8 volt bulb be used? As for overload or short protection a fuse in series. The diode from google search, is a 1N5402 diode which is rated at 3 amps and 200V peak repetitive reverse voltage. 494541.jpg
Last post
Art,
Without a part number it's not possible to say definitively but it's likely to be capable of handling the current draw, whether it'd cope with the reverse voltage over time is perhaps less certain.
Like JIm's component most of these diodes are designed for high-current but low-voltage use, whereas in the case of a magneto charger you have...

When I step on the clutch (smartly all the way) the car sometimes bucks unless i have the engine revved up a bit. Then I seem to be starting too fast. I didn't want to adjust the low band too tight. The peddle was hitting the floor board and I made the slot a bit longer so it wouldn't hit. I may have rebuilt everything but I'm still new to driving.

When you’ve been driving modern cars with manual shifting or an automatic you have to remember ( if you can ) a Model T is 100 year old technology.
Learning how to use the spark lever and gas lever especially when you’re shifting into low or coming to a stop going down hills is totally different than your new Chev, Ford Dodge or whatever pickup....

What are some of you with TT’s using to replace the inner axle seal? Short of sourcing a modern lip seal, I don't see a repop being available. This is the seal next to the differential. Thanx.

Howdy, Mike. I haven't done this myself but someone on the forum advised me to contact Tom at Model A Ford Works. He supposedly has better Inner felts for the TT than what the vendors have. Phone, 503-282-2212. Hope this helps. BTW, I've enjoyed reading all your posts about your TT adventures. Thanks, Bob

Last post
Hi Bill,
Yes, you are partly correct, you can tow a T a VERY SHORT distance slowly, but you can't tow a model T any long distance.
There are several threads here on the forum explaining in more detail but the essence of it is that the transmission will always turn, even in neutral, and it will destroy itself without the lubrication it normally...

Most of the cars I've worked on (a dozen or so in our club) have required new axles for one reason or another. Frequently it's because of damage caused by not keeping the axle nut tight. They do need to be checked, especially withing 50-100 miles after a wheel installation.
After replacing my axles I went the further step of installing floating...
