I wonder where that is. One reason for stopping a Stanley on a bridge is to siphon water. Here we see James Melton and his 1910 Stanley Steamer as his wife watches patiently. The mud, sediment, stones, and other debris sucked through the strainer tend to foul the boiler and shorten it's life. Grit in the water will damage the seats of the pump check valves and plug things up. With the disappearance of horse troughs water became harder to find.

Rich, that's great to see. I wondered if they were about to take on water.

A funny perspective: I'd guess that photo of Melton is at least 70 years old, making his Stanley 40 or less. I'm sure there are folks around who are probably passionate about their 1980s cars, but it just doesn't have the same appeal (to me at least.)

(History note - James Melton was a famous opera singer in the 40s and early 50s. He had an extensive collection of "old cars" and likely did much to popularize the hobby, rather like Jay Leno today. I believe he did a lot to revive the Glidden Tours after WW II.)

I can't think why you would stop on a bridge if not for that. Perhaps they took the photo while waiting for it to siphon. It does take a while. An old friend took a great photo of two young fellows with a Stanley on a bridge like that. I wish I had a copy of it.
There are some great stories and articles about James Melton, Henry Austin Clark and others back in their day. They seem to have had great fun and gave so much to the hobby.
I can't tell what year or model that Steamer is. Several 10 and 20 HP models look similar.
it certainly does get one's mind going.
Thanks
Rich

If you have ever ridden in a steam car when you stop you have to be on a level surface or a downhill grade because he might have to push it to get it started again.

Also there probably wasn’t much shoulder next to the road back in the day and the creek or stream was probably a distance from the road so stopping at a bridge served several purposes.

That was one of Melton's favorite Stanleys, serial #6164. He owned it as early as 1940. There are plenty of photos of it during his ownership, all showing those same cut-down wheels, but I've never seen this one before - thanks!

It's since been restored at least twice - here it is today.

This is one of my favorite images taken
of any vehicle I have transported …. 😉

It was late afternoon in Anacortes, WA
and some folks in the neighborhood
struck a pose by one of Grant’s
Stanley Mountain Wagons …. 👋

I have personally transported four
Stanley Mountain Wagons out of less
than 10 complete surviving examples
that remain in private ownership.

A friend of mine who is a tireless researcher, found photos of my Stanley sedan taken 50 years ago in the early 1970s; the car was younger then than these photos are now.
These pics are a lot of fun for me.

And FYI, it's only about 10 miles from Tennant to Harlan - but that was enough to get in the newspaper!
