I am not sure if this topic is in here someplace or not but I was encouraged to post on the subject from 2 other members so here it goes. Hope you guys like it. This is one of my other toy's or hobbies. 1926, 25 horse Witte throttle governed. Weighs about 4500 lbs, runs like a Swiss watch.

Mine are a bit smaller! They are:
1918 Anderson. A New Zealand made and designed engine with a T connections: the rod and piston are reportedly from a T (I have not had mine apart so cannot confirm this):

I also have a "J" Lister but he is trucked away in a shed. This is the same model (but not my engine):

This is the only one I could find a picture of. 1-3/4 HP Buckeye. Made in Lima, Ohio in the mid teens.

Still can't get over that Witte hopper-cooled 25.
I have a very few smaller engines and should grab an ancient photo and some modern pics.
Beautiful 2-1/2 Waterloo Boy Les. A good friend has an early 7 that my son sure fell in love with.
We were all at Rollag MANY years ago when son was 12 or so and he got to know that sweetheart of an engine.
He'd set it up, pull on the flywheel and purposely fall down on the grass and the engine would start right back up.
Oh we worked with Larry's 3 horse Gade! Such fun over the years with gas engines!
The 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 LA IH was a great worker too. He "wore-in" the new bearings on the Twin City 17-28 engine.
Belt right on the tractor engine flywheel and boiling away...

That Waterloo is a work of art.

I know that there are other members on the site that have engines by they may not know about this thread in the off topic section.

I'm just amazed at how much iron it took for each horsepower.

I have always admired those. Our friend Brian has several and a Model T. We included them in our shows when we can. Your Witte reminded me of them.

Umm, engines named after racing horses...

Yeah, from what I read in C H Wendels big yellow bible, The Dazzle Patch engine was built by Nelson brothers, M W Savage rebadged the after the race horse, i guess a bit of pop culture from the early 1900's,

I recently helped my brother rescue an upright boiler from a barn
and am utterly fascinated with it. It looks like it would take little
work to build it back to functional as shop power or something similar.

[image][/image] These are 2 of my engines. The green devil is a 1922 6hp Fairbanks throttler and the other is a 1912 4hp United. The 6hp has been used to run my early 1900's Frank Machinery 16" planer.

Nice carts. Like the United.

An IH LA and a 1920 Fairbanks Morse Z in back that a friend and I own. 60 bucks from the Benson, MN NAPA store back then.

In front, a Briggs&Stratton Y, a 1926 PB, an F, (where is that Kerosene can? I could use it to replenish T parking/tail lamps), a WM/WMB and the '41 L.

Duey, and the rest. I am posting a few photos of the big engine at a local Farm Show last weekend. 2 days of showing how it starts and runs to many visitors. Worked me hard but it was worth the smiles and conversations.

Whats the HP on that green monster?
I like the H on steel behind it also. I spent alot of time on one that had the spokes cut and converted to rubber after WWII. Not often seen still wearing steel.

Dallas, you were able to use an H on cut-offs? Neat. You're right. H and M steel is odd.
IH did so much to help the customer with wheel options to their liking. And they sold.
Cut-offs are slang of what you describe.
Our later H seat frame saved my life so much respect for the easy to use row-crop/tricycle IH tractors AFTER the F series that weren't that user friendly to get on and off.... F-12/14, Regular/F-20 and the F-30. Son likes them.
I keep telling son that the MM U will be easier to use but he isn't having that. Yet. Until he uses it.
Good running gas engines are a cool blessing. Naman called them eyengines.

Yes guys, 25 horse. Runs like a clock. The cart and engine weigh about 4500lbs. Every so often the engine will miss a beat and blow a smoke ring or 2 which travel up into the air about 50 feet. Crowd loves seeing that so I cut power to the mag once and while to produce the same results just to get them going.

My wood saw engine. Since I found a coal source for the house stoves I haven't used it in a couple of years.

What's that big kettle, a wood gasifier ?
I'm playing with the idea of building one for the T, but they come with a power loss of around 20% compared to gasolene and a T does not exactly have power in surplus

edit: should have looked closer, it's a boiler, duh.. should have noticed the water level sight class

Just found out that Gas Engine Magazine will be printing my article on the 25 horse, where it was found, restoration photos and more.
Guess it will be in the December issue. I hope that they will publish it in full(no editing).

Well ooops,I looked forward to posting these 2 pics to this thread but only 1 picture has engines that are technically hit and miss.
I refurbished the painted Maytag in 2018 from a scrap yard rescued engine that had to have another flywheel and base,but it is somewhere in the mid 30's because of the oilier on the crankshaft near the starter.The unrestored 1 is a april 1936.
The small black Briggs and stratton 5s is 1 of my first 2 engines when I started collecting back in 1989. It was my dad's back when he was young.
The blue 1 is another 5s.
The black handstart Briggs is a scare unit. The metallic green model 8 briggs is 1 that I have had since about 1990 but could never figure out why it would not run.turns out the crankshaft keyway was sloppy and causing ignition timing issues.
I am looking forward to using the tools in my little wood working shop I just finished to make new skids for this rustic maytag and a similar long base engine.

Ok, so it's not a hit n miss, it a 2 stroke diesel, it's a 80 hp Superior engine that ran a roller mill in Barton Wi. It was sold to a guy in Idaho in about 1983-84. We'd like to track it down to possibly visit it,

Here in the Netherlands we had a company called 'Kromhout' who specialized in manufacturing two stroke diesels, most were engines for ships, you could allways tell a ship that had a Kromhout because the flag at the stern would be pitch black from the soot and oil the two stroke Kromhout engines belched out

Fairbanks Morse style D 1 1/2 hp.
runs like a briggs and stratton, this 1 is from a cream separator. I have had this 1 since 1989 I had not run it in years and got it out and made a cart for it this week so I can start showing it again.

Here is my actual hit and miss engine.

I have the cover that goes over it for use in a concrete mixer but all you can see is the flywheels! So I have just kept it in the shed.
I just went thru it today fixing loose wheels and such on the cart,made some new wood for a gas tank support and made up a different fuel tank.The original tank is rotten and expensive to replace on these old engines and they run just fine with a check valve and anything that holds gas.
I bought this engine in december of 1990 from the son of the original owner still in the shed where his dad had left it before he had died and it sat for decades.
I learned a expensive lesson on these engines with this particular 1. It was stuck, and I wanted to unstick it, so I got the flywheels moving back and forth a bit,I knew to be careful, but suddenly it started turning easy. Then I saw why. The magneto had lost some of it's Goo ,tar like stuff, and it was stuck. When I was moving the flywheels I broke teeth off the mag gear. It was a pot metal stuff,so it didn't take much. Turned out my buddy that worked at a machine shop was making gears and he made me this 1 on his lunch break. Cost me 75 bucks! This was in 1991 when 75 bucks would fill up your car and get a hamburger.
So Now I check for stuff like that BEFORE i start trying to make 1 turn.

Just picked up a 2HP Witte from a nieghbor for getting has 1953 Chevy running so he can sell it ( time has cought up with him ) I got this engine running for him 15 years ago and it has set in the weather most of that time. Its not a hit & miss it's a throthle governed but still a open crank case,
took two hours to get everything so it would stay running but was able to run it about 30 min. Staight to check everything out. Gas tank is junk but I made it 15 years ago so what the heck. My phone is not sending pics for some damn reason so they will come when????

This is headed to the local threshers reunion.
All my water cooled engines in 1 place. They are getting to be to heavy to load and unload from a enclosed trailer for me so I did this over the past several months.Built the trailer during the winter and then built the carts over the past few months.

My Grandfather Don Barker in 1977 with his Foos Junior. He passed shortly after this photo was taken and I haven't seen the engine since. Family had a bit of a falling out. Wish I knew where it is now...
