This tells a little bit.
Looks like you kissed out on this one;

This shows the chuck clearly.

Re: How does this work?- Tapping machine
Much larger than a Tapmatic machine. But those have the same 2 drive clutches, one forward, and one aft, just like this big boy. The advertisement mentions tapping 5/8" diameters, so this is a heavy duty unit. A Tapmatic has the same arrangement of clutches, but they are in a small tubular head. If you apply ANY downforce on them, they tap forward. If you relax the down force on the spindle, or lift it a little, the reverse clutch kicks in and they rotate backwards. It is very easy to control them, and since the spindle keeps the tap in line, it reduced tap breakage by a huge amount. This must have come from a factory making heavy equipment, maybe steam engines, or steam locomotives, or large marine engines. It is too large for anything on a Model T or Model A. If you want to sell it, check out the old farm engine sales forums. Some of those big engine owners might be in need of such a machine.
Look up "Tapmatic" and you can see a modern version, but useable on 0-80 up to 5/16" diameter threading or so.

Re: How does this work?- Tapping machine
Tapping machine involves a process where two pieces of metal are fastened together. That also helps drill a hole where screws are utilized. The use of tapping machine helps complete several tasks while saving time and labor. The process is just like tap and die that assist in the manufacturing process to make metal.
