I can't help but notice how similar it is to my White Truck engines. Is it that or perhaps a Rollin?

1917 White Four Cylinder 72 HP Engine
GM Advance Design Four Valves Per Cylinder
Only (5) engines like this were known to be produced
Until last year - only one of those had ran in the last 50 years
Only one other known example was built with two
spark plugs per cylinder
This engine is installed on a White 3/4 ton truck chassis
fitted with a Kundtz car body
This engine runs & the car drives

What is the displacement? Twin plugs probably helped control detonation. That thing must have some compression. Twin cam, T-head?

The 1917 White Passenger Vehicle Chassis
cost $5000 - the body style determined the final price.

Re: FJ - 72 HP From A Four Cylinder Production Engine in 1917 ?
Funny how parallel things were back then. Very interesting thread.
To get 72 HP from a truck/auto engine in 1917 it had to have been a high revving, big-bore, short stroker engine at 330 cubes.
Or it tore itself apart.
Only 5 built. Bummer.
I've a couple 340, twin cam, 16 valve, four cylinder machines here but at 4-1/4 x 6 bore and stroke we're limited to about a thousand rpm's due to the long stroke. They were touted back in the day to muster about 40 horses as a bare engine.
On the drawing boards since 1916, being produced during 1917 and offered to the public in 1918.
By the mid-late 30's 20-1/2 thousand had been produced.
A bigger brother 641, twin cam, 16 valve machine could push 50 hp. Over 1700 built. Or 60 some hp as a power unit/bare engine.
At a hundred rpm's less.
Survivability has been excellent to this day for these machines.
Please ignore this mindless post. Apples to oranges yet in the big scheme of things it may apply.
16 valve engines can be quite free breathing and have also been very economical to use.
White motor Company engineers had there heads on squarely and built excellent machinery.
Wonder why these few didn't fare so well.
Glad you show us the pics and you were able to touch it! Cool.
Thanks FJ!

Thanks Duey
This 1917 White will be at Richmond, Indiana
on May 26th - it will be running
It will be at Dean Yoderโs Farm in Iowa City, Iowa
the following week - not sure of the day yet.
It will be running.
This is perhaps one of one known to exist
