Separating Mixing Bowls: Vexing!
So I have been trying to separate these 2 nested metal mixing bowls (upside down in the picture) for years. These recently came back out after a kitchen reorganization. I have tried many techniques to separate them over the years and so far nothing works. Too big for a vise to hold. Nearly no lip to grab on to. Slippery. Pry one side and the other side goes down. A belt on each one and try to twist so far the belts just slide. Heated, cooled. Any advice is appreciated.

Re: Separating Mixing Bowls: Vexing!
Have you tried heating the outside bowl to expand it and quickly putting ice water in the inside one and immediately trying to separate them?

In the past but the point of contact for the 2 bowls is up on the side so it didn't work. I didn't try with belts though.

You might try submerging them both in water overnight to allow water to get in the small space between the bowls. Then empty the upper one and dry the outside of both and set them on a hot stove. If the water trapped between them boils quickly enough, it may force them apart. (It might be best to try this outdoors)

LOL I was thinking the same thing! Like the outside part! If they have not been used in years, I know what I would do with them...to the curb they would go.TXGOAT2 wrote: ↑Sat Oct 16, 2021 11:41 amYou might try submerging them both in water overnight to allow water to get in the small space between the bowls. BUT; Could be there is enough sealing, so a vacuum is formed between the two. Drill a hole in one big enough to insert a wood dowel to knock them apart, then use the ruined one as a flower pot.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

Re: Separating Mixing Bowls: Vexing!
You could drill a small hole in the bottom one and apply air pressure, then silver solder the hole. ** A better idea: Submerge them in water overnight, upright, so that water will fill the space between them. Take them out of the water and dip the water out of the top one, then dry it with sponge, towel, etc, then place them in a freezer. If enough water gets between them, freezing it willl probably push them apart. It might take a couple of tries, but water is cheap.

I have blown plastic buckets apart that have been stuck together with a sudden burst of air from an air compressor. I don't know if that would work on metal objects but it would be worth a try.

Re: Separating Mixing Bowls: Vexing!
Get a large bowl (or pot of water) and fill with boiling water.
Then put your stuck bowls inside so that it is floating on top (or so that the boiling water is close to the rim).
Add some ice inside the stuck bowl (the "inner" bowl), then add some salt and some cold water.
Wait a few minutes before carefully removing the bowls and water. Then bang the stuck bowls on a towel and with luck they will come apart!
The hot water makes the outer bowl expand while the cold water makes the inner bowl contract. This helps pop the inner bowl out. salt added to the ice to lower the freezing point, making the water much colder.

Re: Separating Mixing Bowls: Vexing!
I would suggest you give the bowls to a couple of young boys and tell them "Whatever you do... do Not take these bowls apart!" I think they would be seperated in minutes!

Looks like they are mixed very well if you can not seperate them. Well done.

Tried that in the past, did not work. They are demonically possessed of one another.

You could give it to my old boss and tell him there’s a half dollar in between them....

Re: Separating Mixing Bowls: Vexing!
Got it! I wrapped it with a belt then put the ends of the belt in a vise. That held it much stronger than my hand could and stabilized the whole thing so I could get various tools on it. Chisel on the lip moved it a little but not much. Long needle nosed pliers did the trick using them to spread the two apart and...success! I can go on with life now. Thanks for all the comments the funny ones were great.

Re: Separating Mixing Bowls: Vexing!
Your old belt did it! Excellent!
Aww shoot. Doc, would you tell/show us WHY you wanted to separate those two bowls?
Other than wanting to. I'd get that.
