Looks like a typical case of American blind justice.

Many years ago, when my older children, who are now in their 60's, were in their teens, they took my pickup with a load headed for the dump. I had given them the fee for the dump. A few days later we were notified by a Sheriff deputy, that there was some trash by the side of a road a few miles from here. They had found some mail addressed to us in that mess and we would be fined if we did not clean it up. So I went down there with them and sat in the truck while they picked it up and then we went to the dump.

They didn't have to go to the group W bench? You did give them shovels, rakes and implaments of distruction to put it back in the truck or red VW microbus?

It sure is refreshing to find other who remember "Alice's Restaurant" as I make reference to it once in a while and usually get blank "deer in the headlights" stares. The good old Group W bench and the 8 x 10 glossies. :)
I used to know the whole thing, but have forgotten much, I don't think I have the record either. Hmmm--"What's a "Record"?)
T'ake care,
David Dewey

Wayne 👋

You are probably referring to Ed Minnie’s thread
on the AACA General Discussion Forum.

If you don’t know who Arlo Guthrie is or how
he got started - his first record - then history
has passed you by ….

Growing up in 1960’s - being the youngest of
six kids - raised in a Roman Catholic family
in Phoenix, Arizona - going to parochial
elementary school ….

Even I was exposed to that song … 🎶🎵

Traveling the country and usually on the road
on Thanksgiving 🦃 …..

It is hard to miss it if you are listening to the radio 📻

I know of Arlo Guthrie, know only a little bit about him. I have heard some of his music over the years, but somehow? Not a lot of it. I have heard references made to "Alice's Restaurant" many times, but I am sure I have never heard more than a few minutes of it.
Yes, it was Ed M's reminiscence I had read. I actually began to listen to the link he shared and was enjoying it. However I had things I needed to ten to and couldn't spend the time to listen to much of it.

Is there something in that nearly thirty minutes that connects to Thanksgiving? I just get curious about all sorts of things.

As I often do, when something intrigues me, I googled and and read a bit, including some on Wikipedia. Sounds interesting. So now I know a bit more about him. They didn't really explain the Thanksgiving thing. Just said that it was a thing.

Arlo is Woody Guthrie's hippie son. Woody Guthrie is credited with writing a number of American standards, including "This Land Is Your Land", as I recall.

Arlo has parlayed a bit of his father's storytelling into his
musical and performing style. Go to a show of his, and you
will spend as much time listening to him tell stories as play
music. Alice's Restaurant was a purposely woven tale, to make
a long story come around full circle on a very LARGE circle !

The story starts with the bit about the Thanksgiving visit, the
dump incident and subsequent arrest, the court procedings, which
later relate to when our protagonist is ordered to appear for his
draft hearing, and the arrest record comes up, this leads the entire
story back to the beginning, as Arlo relates the whole beginning
story to an audience that can't relate, there at the draft office.
His style and method of finding multiple ways to say the exact
same thing were what caught my ear for lyrical style and humor.
A brilliant song that is not very easy to play on the guitar.
More people are doing it today than ever before !
