Re: Yet another puzzle
The decorated clock-themed car is not a Ford; it has frame horns for longitudinal springs and there is not Ford flywheel housing visible between the front tire and fender. The radiator is too far forward, too.

Re: Yet another puzzle
Looking at the guy in the seat vs the car's size and with with most details covered, it seems more suited to a two-cylinder car. A lot of details align; the lift at the tips of the back fenders and the big radius in the curve of the front fenders, the forward radiator, the elliptical springs visible at the back of the car, the frame horn at the front, the overall proportions, I think it is a 1909 Buick Model F.

Re: Yet another puzzle
That is a believable assumption, Dan. The fact that we can't see a steering wheel and the Model Fs tilted up seems logical to me.
Here is one for the group to ID. The cowl looks like a Thomas, but the car looks small for that.

Yep, Rich, that is absolutely a 1907 Thomas Flyer.

Re: Yet another puzzle
Here’s one Iam trying to figure out for my mother. She’s been building genealogy books. She said the driver is her great aunt and it was said the car was new or newer. Any ideas on what car this is?

Re: Yet another puzzle
To me it looks like another Buick, not unlike the attached 1924 models.
Edit: Scratch that, the top does not match, and no bucket headlamps.

The newest mystery car is a 1922 Willys Knight.

I guess that would make sense because her aunts brother in law (my great grandfather) sold overland vehicles at his ford dealership in that era. Probably bought it off him. ThanksDan Haynes wrote: ↑Tue Oct 04, 2022 10:20 pmThe newest mystery car is a 1922 Willys Knight.

Re: Yet another puzzle
That one is a 1906 or earlier REO 1-cylinder 4-seat Runabout.
They are nicely posed for the photo.
Rich
The hood was not the familiar shape used from 1907 and later. The folding seat is quite recognizeble as REO.They are nicely posed for the photo.

Mr. Iffrig's roadster is similar to the attached 1913 Cartercar, but has several differences. Maybe it is still a Cartercar?

Mr. Doris,
I think that is a dolled up '27 or '28 Nash, similar to this one. It's pretty! Wonder what colors it was.

Re: Yet another puzzle
Maybe easy for you. My first guess was another European car looking at the doors in the hood. But NO. It is a Royal Tourist made in Cleveland. 1906 or 1907 I am guessing.
Headlamp make was optional I suppose. Note the Gary & Davis Bullet ones in my first photo.

Re: Yet another puzzle
Rich, my acquaintance with (to say "knowledge of" would be ridiculous!) the early cars and their details is so impoverished, you may rely that the photos I post are all a mystery to me. The overall lines of this one looked familiar enough to me, I thought perhaps it was a make that had been identified in a previous post. No doubt it's a Royal, all the details match.

Re: Yet another puzzle
There were so many different makes that are not seen that often. I have learned an awful lot cruising though pictures of ones posted here that I wouldn't have known otherwise. Here are some details from eBay. Royal is kind of illusive.
Thanks for finding them. I like to see the engine details. Cast in pairs as the Ford NRSs and many at that time.

Nice work Dan. That's a tough one for me.
The license plate is 1915 Maryland, so the photo is of a fairly new car.
It looks like cool weather there too.

The windshield and general body shape is exceptionally similar to the era Maxwell, but they and Chalmers weren't in cahoots until 1917.
Those fenders are very modern looking for 1915!

I guess that is what I was thinking of.
Years ago, there was a 1909 Cadillac for sale at Chickasha. I remember looking at it because the seller (who I didn't know) was from New Melle MO. That is about twenty-five miles away from me. Just a coincidental thing.

Re: Yet another puzzle
Looks a lot like this 1902 Rambler Model C Runabout.
I posted some photos of what might have been one of these old Ramblers in a barn, with the intention of learning more about it. However the cars have been passed to the family after the owners death and I don’t think they need me snooping around anymore.

Re: Yet another puzzle
Herb Iffrig's Rambler photo of November 16 and Tadpole's Rambler photo of November 17 are of Model E Ramblers and they came out for the 1903 year and got carried over into early 1904. Production 1902s didn't have any cooling grating on the sides of the main body, that's a Model E/ 1903 thing. The red Rambler is older, you can see the center pivot bracket in the middle of the front axle. Newer Model E's, the body is made a little different and I think a little cruder. That's typical of the Iffrig photo.

Re: Yet another puzzle
It is quite the sporty Roadster. Like the Jordan "Playboy", Kissel "Goldbug", Stutz Bearcat, Templar and Stevens Roadsters it would be a great car to have. I don't see it as any of those. I hope someone else can tell us.
Great pic.

Re: Yet another puzzle
At first glance, I could have bought the idea of one of those sleek body kits for a Model T, but the "bump" forward of the rear fender speaks of parallel elliptic springs, and what is visible of the flywheel area is definitely not Ford. Like trying to identify a suspect wearing a hoodie, the side curtains probably obscure features that might give more clues. It sure looks rain-proof buttoned up like that. Neat photo.

Re: Yet another puzzle
That's a tough one I'm not familiar with. The only clue I could go by was the radiator emblem. After finding a match, I could read the pennants. Best of luck to others.

That is a Model 31 Empire. There are only about 5 of them in existence.
I would post a photo of the one in our museum here in Greenville if I could figure out how to post photos on this forum.

Re: Yet another puzzle
The same people who started the Empire Automobile co also built the Indianapolis Motor Speedway at about the same time and they put all their effort into running the speedway and ignored the Empire. They farmed out the assembly of the cars in 1913 and some of them were assembled here in Greenville and others in Connersville Indiana, which is about 30 miles south of the Model T museum in Richmond IN. A very nice museum in Connersville has one of the remaining 5 known cars.
The September October 2022 issue of Antique Automobile magazine has a nice little article about the Empire.

Mr. Iffrig,
Your last car looks like a '16-'17 Maxwell Model 25, very similar to mine and Mr. Eagles. Great to see a photo of one shiny new with its pinstriping and belly pan! Doesn't have demountable rims so maybe it's a late '15?

Thanks for commenting, Mr. Glahn.
This is another nice photo to add to the file.
Since Jack Benny was on radio, a year was not established for the car. Simply by picking "Maxwell" was funny as they were obsolete and cheap by then. When movies and TV came along, various years were used at different times for his Maxwell from the '00 era to the teens depending on what fit the needs. I have seen several different ones he claimed. And part of the gag was that Jack Benny had traded in his Stanley steamer on the Maxwell.

Re: Yet another puzzle
I recall the car in that third picture being on the television show. I never heard the gag that he'd traded in a Stanley Steamer. I guess perhaps 25-30 years seemed further in the past in the early 1950s, yet both marques had to be still vivid in the collective memory for the humor to work.

Re: Yet another puzzle
Speculation -? Rich's post seems to indicate eleven persons were aboard this "camper" participating in an auto rally in 1912 - plausibly the route was between St. Gregoire in France, to San Sebastián in Spain, a distance of about 500 miles following the curve of the Bay of Biscay, likely very scenic. I'm guessing the ladder is for access to the gear packed on top of the camper body. Brooms ? You never see a sheep camp without a broom Probably they were very neat campers ! (we still don't know the make of the car)

The translation from Dutch:
1912, "Camper" with 11 people wins the rally Posen (Poland) - San Sebastian (Spain) (3500 kilometers in 7 days), also the vehicle with its flower boxes was awarded the Prix de l'Elegance.
3500km = 2175 miles

First thought was Winton. Not sure of the year. The cowl lights arrangement would suggest early teens although it appears to have electric headlights.Rich P. Bingham wrote: ↑Sat Dec 03, 2022 10:36 amThis one may be easy, maybe harder to identify the year model ?
Found ads from 1912 and 1913. Electric lights are a feature for 1913. The 1912 still features acetylene lamps.

Nice work Bob. I looked at some and can't tell what year. '13 had a curve to the front fenders and '12 had acetylene lights. Probably a different Model but about those years.
Loziers looked quite similar.
Thanks

Re: Yet another puzzle
I can feel the cold from that photo. Especially this time of year. Been there, done that. Not today thanks.
The first car is surely a Model T of 1917 or later. The second looks like a '15 or so Buick. The radiator emblem, windshield posts and oval rear window would fit that. Several others were similar. It looks like a nice neighborhood. I think it would take some shoveling to get the cars out in the street. Or some pushing.

Re: Yet another puzzle
The fenders are likely '15 or '16. The brass windshield is a bit earlier. Adlake lights or maybe Deitz were popular for commercial vehicles. The rear wheels are demountable and maybe a little stronger.
U.S. Mail sure used a lot of different vehicles.
