My grandparents lived on the Pine Ridge Reservation, a thoroughly miserable place.

The ritual and habitual murder of Native Americans by white Europeans in North America is the biggest untold story in the history of the USA. Men, women and children were slaughtered for the sake of coast-to-coast expansion.

It seems to me that wearing the clothes would produce warmth for a much longer time than from burning them. I would recommend huddling up with each other and dogs or other tame animals and use as many blankets as possible. But, who am I to know? It will be in the 70's and 80's here in the San Diego area. We have relatives in Michigan, Idaho, Washington and Oregon who are likely to be very cold.

Imagine having a town law that requires that cars have tires. Too many without means were driving on bare wheels. Pine Ridge, location of Wounded Knee, is such a place. I didn't live there but visited often. My older brother and I got tired of being assaulted on the street because we were not Sioux enough. Grandpa Harley was only half Sioux. We took up boxing and finally earned respect. Miserable lives there.

Pretty much every race, tribe, or collection of human beings on earth have been enslaved, did the enslaving, conquered, or otherwise dispossessed someone throughout the entirety of history.

The American Indian of various tribes lived, died, enslaved, murdered, were murdered, conquered and were conquered, by other tribes for their land and resources for thousands of years prior to the expansion of Europeans to the "New World". Westward migration was but one of many instances of one people dislocating another. It is noteworthy only in that it was the last.

Remarkably, despite how poorly the American Indian has fared under the "benevolence" of the US Government, it seems that the vast majority of people still believe that government should take care of all of us. Seems a lot of people have not been paying attention.

No one can do a damn thing about what happened yesterday, but if you need something to cry over and maybe make a difference other than die of crushing undeserved guilt, cast your eyes to any war-torn or poverty-scorched area from Africa, Europe, South America or Central America to see people being murdered, starved or dispossessed.

Inhabitants of all stripes in North America never had it so good with respect to opportunity to better themselves. From inner cities, to Appalachia, to the reservation, If what you're doing sucks, then try something else, but don't blame me if you're a 3rd generation basket-case busy churning out the 4th. And honestly, anyone who thinks that burning clothes is the most useful way to keep warm, then maybe, just maybe, it really isn't anyone else's fault for living that way.

Nomadic peoples almost never do well when they encounter large numbers of "civilized" folk. When "civilized folk" encounter a large force of nomadic peoples, such as Attila's Horde, the same situation typically results, except that nomadic warrior nations rarely hold onto empires for long. The two lifestyles are not compatible. Some of the American Indian tribes have done pretty well in spite of abuses. (conquest) Others have not. Americans had better wake up to what's going on in our country, and the world beyond it, lest we find that we are a conquered people.

I could rant for pages but I will just say this.
The Indians that were here before we were,were robbed,abused,murdered.And some of them were my ancestors on my dads side.
Some of them opened gambling casinos,and are buying back what was stolen from them with the other mans money.
Repatriations, IF a single dime is owed to anyone for what was done century's ago,it is the American Indians.

Native Americans. I was born in this country too. My teachers in school told me there was no reason to be ashamed of being Indian. I couldn't convince them I wasn't. Being poor German immigrants, we all lived, 7 of us, in a brown paper bag in the middle of the road. Times were tough but we got by.
