I’ve been warning about this and similar “conspiratorial” type modern car paranoias for as long as I can remember. While I do agree that our roads would greatly benefit from self driving cars as a large portion of the driving population have suboptimal skills, the idea of these self driving cars being “networked” is terrifying to me! How’s that old saying go again…? Something about absolute power corrupting absolutely…?

Yikes! What could go wrong?
How would it get out of the garage ?
What happens if the kids are in the car waiting for mom to get something she forgot in the house and the car drives away to the impound lot
My car drove away with my life saving medication!
Wife’s going into labor in the driveway because the car drove off
Car became upset and shutdown in the road blocking emergency services.
Car goes into repo mode shutdown and locks occupants in during 100 degree temperatures. That should make them uncomfortable so they will have to pay there bill to get out!
And the list goes on….

This kind of stuff disgusts me. Ford ought to know better.

Not to mention the fact that folks with not so good of intentions can hack into computers. So gee, 1 terrorist shuts down 50 Fords along city streets to block emergency crews,, another terrorist shuts down 2 Fords at the exit of a parking deck while another terrorist remote drives a car into a place with a bomb.

And of course Ford says, "Nothing to see here,no potential for issues at all,you are just paranoid."

An interesting thing happened Sunday on the way to church in our Subaru. It has cruise control which automatically slows you down if the car ahead slows down. I was on the interstate set at 70 which is the speed limit. A car came around me and immediately pulled in front of me and began to slow down, so I decided to pull around it. As I was concentrating on that car in front I started to go to the left land and a quick glance I saw a Highway patrol. So I immediately swerved back into the right lane and almost onto the shoulder as I pulled back behind the slower car. I went about 1/4 mile when the cop pulled behind me with the light flashing, so I pulled over. He said I was driving erratically and he wondered If I was all right? Anyway no ticket but it was the car who pulled in front of me who should have been stopped. It seems almost no one follows the speed limit and they don't get cited for it. If you don't enforce the law people will ignore it.

if this technology would take over the old car world might be doomed. making all old cars non-compliant
the model T will then be considered a form of distracted driving.
pedals, levers. knobs, manual wipers, rattling noises, and people driving slow taking in the scenery.

A "smart" car could read the texting & cell phone use, automatically pull the car safely to the curb & shoot a bolt thru the drivers chest from the steering wheel center. No, to radical? How bout varying levels of electric shocks.
It works to train dogs. Cure stupid directly on the stupid.

Self driving cars seem to be more dangerous than telephone operators behind the wheel. It will get worse as more fools get them and begin to do even more idiotic things on the road than they are doing now. I predict mass hackings, rolling "sideshows", and huge increases in road building and maintenence costs as attempts are made to adapt roadways and traffic signals to "self driving cars." People will turn children loose in self-driving cars, and perhaps send their pets out for a cruise. Rolling drug parties are a near-certainty.

Autopilot systems for aircraft and trains barely make sense, and I don't believe autopilot systems will ever make sense for road vehicles.

The answer to idiots behind the wheel is not automated idiots, it is more, and more effective, law enforcement.

Control the overt idiots, and let everyone else alone.

Maybe ford could make simple cars cheap.

How about screening customers & selling to those able to pay for the car. Duh.
Remember the housing debacle under Clinton.
Mortgage lenders were forced to loan to people that couldnt possibly pay it back.
Didnt end well, did it?

Why would they loan money to a responsible borrower who shows very little risk of default…? Or worse yet… will pay the loan off early!!! How will they make money then…?

The secret to success is collecting fees and late penalties, then charging for the repo and sticking the borrower with the debt even after the car is long gone! Imagine if multiple people were simultaneously paying on that same car, that they no longer own! Logic doesn’t dictate the actions of men… greed does

When I showed up for police Academy, an instructor saw my ancient truck
and later pulled me aside and asked "Do you have a less conspicuous vehicle ?"
I informed him that all my vehicles were pretty conspicuous, and his simple
reply was "GET ONE !". And thus began my only story of ever buying a vehicle
with payments. I was so annoyed to have debt that I paid it off ASAP, but that
always leads me back around to how accepting people are today about taking
on debt as perfectly OK and normal. Thankfully, I am largely repulsed by vehicles
made after 1970, so any urge to go into debt buying one is not there. Beyond the
suppository styling of cars and the belt line on trucks being so high it requires a
ladder to even SEE into the bed, the high tech and electronics that leave the
owner at the total mercy of the dealer to repair .... and now this ? Unwitting
Americans are paying for the privilege of having their ability to not be totally
dependent on "the system" taken from them. When will people wake up ?

I LOATHE debt, including that imposed upon me by runaway government.

Many, if not most, people today never actually own anything, and many have paid for anything they have redeemed from debt at least twice over, thanks to interest, penaties, and required insurance. To add to the insanity, the government that drives most of the population into chronic debt is itself in deep debt, for no rational reason. Bankers and other "lenders" are never shy about collecting interest, but you won't catch them paying any.

Ford Motor Company in its early years was a very well-run enterprise. The early advertising and corporate material discussing company philosphy and operations makes interesting reading today.
