Coolant Disposal

I have a repair shop, so I accumulate a few gallons of used coolant and oil.
I have been giving my oil to a friend with an oil burner in his shop and he hooks me up on used Ford truck parts. This had left me with almost 3 full 55 gallon drums of old coolant.
One local company was taking both and the last time I had no coolant. They are supposed to pay for the oil, but the driver blew smoke at me about fuel surcharges and I needed at least 150 gallons to get paid....so that why I quit dealings with them.

I was told $75 per drum to remove coolant ! :shock:
Well I had to bite the bullet and had them come out. Different driver and he took 3-55s of oil and the 3 drums of coolant...no charge !! :D

What do you do ? AZ and Advanced used to take a couple gallons but no longer do around her...

I think this pertains to all Model T owners and is not "OT"

and to noone in particular, I'll state that I wish there was no OT specific forum...good stuff like this ends up buried amoung the ever-growing list of stupid stuff that can't be posted on another forum. The old forum had the occasional "OT" item, but they sure weren't about diatribes against fat people or the virtues of electric cars. Idiotic ramblings don't bother me per se, but it is a nusance to go through them to hope to find topics like this one.

I had a lot of difficulty finding this thread too. So many threads on OT and they are moving all the time, this thread would not have gotten buried so fast on the regular Forum. Plus the title, " Coolant Disposal " is a little misleading. But I persevered and found it at long last!

Back in the day oil was spread on the dirt road to keep the dust down. I don't think that is accepted practice now.

Here the county has disposal stations for garbage and they take oil, antifreeze, paint, and many chemicals for no charge. There is really no excuse for not disposing of the stuff responsibly.

I agree Tom, coolant is very toxic. Be responsible. ;)
I'm no environmental activist, but I like to fish.
I forget the exact figure, but a tablespoon of coolant will contaminate an acre of water ??

Dave you can put the oil on my road. The dust retardant the county uses rusts the $hit out of our modern vehicles. Im sure it kills butterflies and frogs to. It keeps the grass from growing in the center also. Maybe thats the horse and buggies?😁

Check around and see if any repair shops in your area have a coolant/antifreeze recycler, I had one in my shop and as long as the used coolant isn't contaminated with oil it can be recycled and sold as recycled, some of my customers loved that they could buy recycled anti freeze.

Dave,

I am not sure if the company you are dealing with is the one that moved to Mt Gilead, Ohio a couple of years back, but if not there is one located there that comes around Northern Ohio picking up anti freeze. They sent me a flyer some years back. Unfortunately I cannot remember their name, but I am sure a search with the town name will show it.

I just place mine in small shallow pans so the neighbors cats & dogs have something to drink when they get thirsty and are over by my garage. :o
