I am trying to impress my Grandchildren with the value of saving! We have started a penny collection due to their low value (it takes at least 2 of these to buy something) and the amount of space they take up in your pockets. Do you think this is worthwhile or do we need to add nickles and dimes?

A dollar is about what a penny was worth in the 1930's. i thank they should not make anything less than a quarter. The prices can be rounded off to the nearest quarter. My mother actually scraped up 25 cents and bought dinner for my dad, her, and me, including the meat.

Me and my boy search for pennies 1982 and older due to their copper nature. 1982 was a transition year so they need to be weighed (3.11 grams) to determine their copper load. Any wheat pennies, Indian head, anomalies ect.. are also separated into another jar. if there is a copper shortage you are allowed to cash in copper pennies for there copper value.
Their current melt value is $0.0288804
Whether this is worth it or not is debatable but I guess it keeps his young mind busy without a electronic screen of sorts . This makes the penny priceless

If you are trying to teach them about saving then you need to teach them that ALL money has value and that pennies make dollars, if only some money have value it may confuse them. When ask at the store if I want my penny change, I always say damn right, I worked just as hard for that penny as the 299 that I just gave you. I even pick up pennies off the ground, it's good exercise.

My dog Hank and I walk 3-4 miles a day around town and I generally find change every day, it usually totals out to a goodly sum this year was no different. We start and stop on march 18 which is my mothers birthday. When I total it up I match it and donate the full sum to a charity in remembrance of Mom. Jim
This years take not counted yet.

Bryant just a couple of modern oddities you might want to keep your eye peeled for
2009 "Lincoln set" 1 year only getting harder to find
depicting Lincolns birth place sitting on a log and standing beside the capitol in D.C.
2005 Nickle reverse has Buffalo 1 year only very hard to find.
