Price comparison of Gas
I often wonder why the prices of gas vary so much from one brand to another and with the location of the station. We live in a smaller town about 10 miles from a larger city. Our gas is usually about 25 cents a gallon higher than it is in the city. Also the two stations at the highway interchange are about 10 cents higher than on our main street only about one mile away.
Another thing I notice when down in the city is that one particular name brand is always about 15 cents lower in cost than the other name brands and even though the stations might be on opposite corners of the same intersection, both have customers pumping gas!
It would seem to me that if people would stop buying the more expensive brands the companies would lower the price. I have not found any difference in how my cars, including the modern ones, run on any of the gas brands.

In my town our gas prices are usually 10 cents higher then at the interstate that's a few miles up the road so I try to get gas when I'm up there. I got gas yesterday it was $2.35 a gallon at all the stations.

Supposedly.... the distance the delivery trucks have to drive to deliver fuel has a little to do with area prices. But I don’t really buy that crap.
Often prices are cheaper about 10 miles away closer to town and sometimes it’s reversed.
Wife got it for $2.17 with her $0.06 discount yesterday on the other side of our small town and it was $0.12 higher around the corner from here.
At least we don’t pay them Commiefornia prices !

Gas prices here change like the wind. Goes up 40 cents in ten minutes. Takes ten days to drop 30 cents?

Boy! I thought our gas here was a good deal when it dropped from $4.29.9 to $3.79.9 this last month at the Chevron station for regular.

Price went down the last few days, most town places are at $3.859, but the casino is at $3.709, your prices haven't been seen in these parts for over a year.
T'ake care,

Re: Price comparison of Gas
Fewer people would mean less in sales, thus raise the price. Higher population = economy of scale, make it up in volume. Also, what do you think they make more money on, the gas or coffee and fountain drinks?Norman Kling wrote: ↑Fri Nov 22, 2019 11:11 amWe live in a smaller town about 10 miles from a larger city. Stations closer to the highway charge more because they can because of the economy of convenience. Closer to the on/off ramps they charge more for the simple convenience of you being able to do so. Why drive that extra 1 mile when what you want is right here.
As for being able to save 3-5 dollars by going across the street, who can say? It could be brand loyalty or that person just does not want to be bothered with making a left turn.
I don't believe the myth of higher transportation cost either, they are just charging what they can get. For the most part I buy 90% of my gas at the local Kroger grocery store. You buy gift cards in the store for whatever purchases you want to make outside of the store (Lowes, Target, Amazon, restaurants, Ebay, etc.) and whatever you spend you get double the "fuel points", $100 dollars equals 200 fuel points. You can get 0.10 cents off a gallon for 100 points, up to $1 off a gallon (total of 35 gallons). Doing this has saved me about $500 - $600 a year. If I am going out-of-town or on any type of a road trip I always check the route with gasbuddy.com as it shows current station prices along my route.

Re: Price comparison of Gas
In Michigan I try to buy from stations associated with Meijer's stores. Use their credit card and get 10 cents off per gallon from what is already a good price. I paid $2.22 yesterday. California prices are what we pay for aviation gas back here.

Re: Price comparison of Gas
I agree with everything that Pep just said.
It's all about location, location, location.
When driving down the highway, the passerby does not know about the pump just a mile or two down the road. It might cost the saving for the extra miles.
The big difference between the prices across the street is because the person in charge of the pricing has not given the order for the change.
We would change our price up or down depending on the station across the street.

Re: Price comparison of Gas
In our town there are two major brand stations across the street from each other located right at the off ramp from the highway. The Shell is always 2 cents less than the Chevron. Always, regardless of the price of either! I think I know the reason, because this is the first gas station along the highway for about 30 miles coming from the east. If you go about 8 miles farther you will find one about 15 cents less.

Re: Price comparison of Gas
I talked to my brother on Christmas day, he lives in Florida said regular gas is $2.07 a gallon there. I paid $3.49 a few days ago here in northern California.
