Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Dan, your glib comment points to the "lag time" necessary for a Stanley vehicle to fire up a head of steam before getting under way. I wonder how long that really is ?
On the other hand, I believe the term "fire engine" originated in horse-drawn days, reference to the mobile steam engines that were used to pump water for the fire hoses. If I recall correctly, that equipment was kept "simmering" in the fire stations so as to shorten the time required to power up the pumps if an alarm was called in. Firemen would stoke the boilers en route to a fire, oftimes arriving at the scene with a full head of steam, ready to go. Perhaps the Stanley was managed in similar fashion so that the Chief and the fire marshal would arrive at a conflagration in timely manner ?

It takes long enough to blow up in your face! Electric cars take a long time to charge too. The old gasoline cars are still the most reliable and one like a Model T can be crank started even if the battery is dead. Keep them running and full of gas. Never know when you will need one in an emergency!

Rich -
I've always heard steam pumpers were connected by umbilicals to the stationary boiler in the firehouse, so the water in the pumper boiler was scalding hot but not under pressure. A healthy charge of kindling, wood and coal were laid in the firebox waiting for a match to be tossed in while the horses were brought forward and hitched up.
I always tell people who ask that it takes about a half hour to raise steam in the Stanleys unless you're in a hurry - then it takes an hour and a half. I know a guy who would put only a couple of inches of water in his boiler to fire up so he could get underway in eight minutes. That's hard on stuff, though. The superheaters really don't like that, they turn red hot and sag; not to mention the dry upper ends of the copper boiler tubes. It's easier on everything if the boiler is full and you just learn to love the half-hour process.

Dan, thank you for the insight on steam ! Much appreciated. Though fascinated with all aspects of steam, my few experiences have been very rewarding, though.

Rich, I honestly have to check myself, otherwise I would blather on about steam forever. I love it. I know it's hijacking the trucking thread, but I'm still waiting for the burner for the sedan. It is a 1923 and completely unrestored. I can't wait to have it back on the road.
I finished getting the engine back in the 30 hp Mountain Wagon on Saturday. It may be back on the road before the sedan.

Dan, there will be plenty of opportunities to continue the truck thread. Meanwhile, you can blather on to your heart's content far as I'm concerned !
20 years ago or more, I had the good fortune at a car show to be next to a gent with a 1910 White steamer, I don't know which model, it was a touring, about Model T size. He enthused that it was affordable to get into steam; he had mortgaged his house ! (He was single)
I really appreciate seeing the pics of your cars ! And I recall my Dad (b. 1920) told me when he was a small boy, and the kids played a game where they picked their favorite make of car, he always picked Stanley Steamer !

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
There is a loophole, Rich -
This is the truck thread, so I can post legitimate photos of Stanley trucks LOL. Drivers of Stanley Mountain Wagons from Estes Park, Colorado, would meet trains at the station in Loveland and drive loads of guests up the Big Thompson River canyon to the Stanley Hotel. The Mountain Wagons were the largest and most robust car ever made by Stanley Motor Carriage Company and were an offshoot of the 1906 "Rocket", which set the World Land Speed Record of 127.659 mph. The power plant design was repurposed for the 30 hp Model K roadster and, later still, was re-geared for power and less speed in the early Mountain Wagon design.

The first Mountain Wagons were built to carry nine passengers or, if desired, the rear seats could be removed to convert them into an express wagon.

Dan, thanks for the Steam talk. Feel free to add to the steam car thread any time also.

Many of us enjoy steam cars that don't even have one. Some of the steamers seem more truck than car anyhow.
I believe the Off Topic side carries some of us through between the fantastic model T topics. We offer a wide variety of subjects and cover them better than most other sites that I have looked at.
I can't thank the administrators and other members enough for making it possible.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Oh, I agree, Rich, about being grateful for the forum! I love my Model T Fords and will probably always have at least one underfoot. Steamers, though - and Stanleys in particular - are so... I don't know - unlikely? Can you imagine trying to sell such a thing today? Honestly, can you imagine spending $5,700 for a Stanley sedan in 1923 dollars? You could buy a Pierce-Arrow for that price. You could buy a Lincoln for that price! But some people (hapless dupes?) laid their cash on the counter for a steam car when you could buy a Ford touring for $295.
Before the big 30 hp Mountain Wagons made their debut, fleets of 20 hp Model F Stanley touring cars did the grunt work of hauling passengers up to the park and back down to catch their train. That depot as it exists today: 20 hp Model F Stanley touring car headed up Big Thompson Canyon to the Hotel

Mr Stanley! You have hi-jacked a thread on Trucks. Start a thread on Stanleys if you want to post here. If you aren't careful I am going to report you to the administrator. Jay Leno has proven to me that Stanley's are very dangerous vehicles!

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Speaking of milk trucks, here is a White model 20 with DC/Maryland dual plates (1921) like we were mentioning the other day on the Dodge Coupe thread.
This photo has appeared a number of places. The Shorpy version is such nice quality that we can see lots of detail. The hydraulic radiator shocks, the Adlake side lights and even the compression release lever, by the red dot, are clearly seen.

Wonderful pix ! In later years, who would have thought a Cadillac would be a milk truck ? Thanks for pointing out the details on the White, Rich. Looks like brick and cobble stone were pretty hard on tires !

While I'm at it I thought I would show the workings of those radiator shocks.
Rich
The manual shows some heavy springs, but on disassembly for cleaning I had found the springs replaced by several different diameter, short pieces of pipe and flat washers that the grease was forced through with any vertical movement of the radiator. I suspect this was a later improvement or cure for weakened springs. I can't think of any other make that used these, but the radiator has remained in wonderful condition after 100 years.Rich

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Jerry, the Goodyear tires that were on my bus when I got it didn't need air. They were so stiff they stood up by themselves.
Goodyear carved serial numbers into each tire, and I believe they kept track of the milage. The numerals were about an inch high.
I spent several months carving the tires from the rims. The rubber had bonded better than welding. If you worry about tire prices, price 36 x 6 tires today. More than 4 times what I paid in 1982. Double that for All-White
Rich
They were likely 10 ply. We counted the layers of cord and rubber but didn't get to 10. The Shorpy photo suggests they are about to change the tire. "Skagway character, Martin Itjen, came looking for Klondike gold in 1898 and became the local undertaker, Ford dealer, coal deliveryman, and the town's most celebrated storyteller. I believe you are correct, Mr. Glahn, about the Olds truck. the Beverly Hillbillies drove a 1921 Oldsmobile Model 46. Very similar front end.

Several nice photos of this 1923 Packard Model EC Fire Engine are on the Classic Driver site. I enjoy seeing well preserved machines so this caught my eye. Perhaps others will too.

Look Out Below. Fast exposure if real, likely not. Cute old photograph tho!

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
I can only imagine descending those hills with a heavy load. Brakes burn out fast in those trucks so gearing and steering was vital to surviving.
It looks like the hood has wire mesh rather than louvers. That is delightful and one can see the engine through it.
Wonderful photos.

I think this picture has been posted here before and a cable was visible going back from the truck uphill probably to a winch of some kind. It is highly unlikely that the drivers relied on the brakes for this picture to be taken

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
The U.S. produced so many trucks mobilizing for WW I the market was saturated with surplus units well into the 1920s. I always found it amusing that Packard and Pierce, the prominent luxury car makers were foremost among the builders of big trucks. Great photo !!

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
It is a Garford Turck. Garford made cars for a short time and were in cahoots with Studebaker. It didn't last, but they made trucks for some time including ones for the WW1 effort. I could see the ?ord in the bumper and went to a list in "This Was Trucking" which Herb mentioned when starting this thread. I am lucky to have many books from the dark ages and sometimes can actually find information in them. "Sanford" was the other guess.

It is pretty wonderful. It's a 1911 Kelly-Springfield limousine-bus. The company was located in Springfield, Ohio, and the coachbuilder in Indianapolis, Indiana. The chassis is a K-30 one-ton model.
Thanks for the treat of seeing it.

That may be a Model F. There were 3 other Models:” E”, one-ton, $1275:” A”, two-ton, $1675”, and "T", three-ton, $2550 according to this ad. A cast iron radiator with bolt on top tank was used on bigger ones.

I see a nice OSHA hazard there; you come in from the light into the dim of the garage, step into the hole in the plank floor, sprain your ankle, stumble and step on the edge of the board fixing that other hole, sprain your other ankle and spend the next three weeks on the porch eating up your small savings
Nice truck by the way !

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Thanks Rich for that link to all those trucks. The Kenworth in the first pic from the Tv Show Movin on is the second season truck. The first season truck was lost in a fire. I was lucky enough in 1975 or 6,can't remember which, to be able to go the old Southern 500 Truck stop right off I85 in Charlotte to see them filming parts of a episode there,I have a photo of me standing beside the first season truck. Had 1 of me and my mother with Claude Akin but it has been lost when she left many moons ago.
I was able to talk to the owner of the truck in the photo at a show in Concord back several years ago. I got my picture took then with the second season truck so I have both! A slight difference in both the truck and me.
Until that time ,there was never any sleepers that large on semi's. They had that 1 made for the camera and operator to be able to ride in the truck and it kinda took hold and they became popular. Claude actually took time to learn to drive the truck some as well so they didn't have to use a double.

If you can't help em, don't hinder em'

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Lange is a new one on me. I can't find much on the net except this, but it is listed in the "Trucking" book. Wikipedia lists it as Lange Motor Truck (1911–1931) A faint PENNA keystone appears on the license plate which agrees with the Carnegie, PA on the sideboard.

Nothing but real truck right there. No comfort just made for hauling heavy loads.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
I don't think it is a REO. Most ones I see of that era had High-wheeler wheels and smaller hubs (caps). The drive sprocket is similar but larger. I may be wrong. I don't know what it might be but there are some here who might.

I'm not sure what make the truck is. I believe this is the same one.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
It's a great truck! That reminds me, I need to get new wood and hard rubber for my Maxwell rear wheels.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
I don't understand why this load doesn't fall off the back - unless the metal item at rear is part of this load of wool bags ?? The sheepherders have a soft ride and a fine view. What make of truck ?
