Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
The radiator has a Pierce shape, but Pierce didn't have a badge on the top tank of their assembled radiators. And I'm sure their trucks used a cast iron tank that might have had fins in the tank.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
The double row of louvers should be a good clue. Is the thing that looks like a nozzle some sort of shock device for a radiator mount.
It looks like an internally finned brake mounted to the drive sprocket.
I don't recognize this one.
Thanks for posting it.

That is a delightful vehicle. And yes, the brake drum looks very much the same. I don't remember seeing any like that before.

Next few lines are a bit OT to this thread.
Always looking for info about executives Macfarlane & Gelbarth of Minneapolis Steel & Machinery plus more SPECIFIC details about the merger in 1929 between the Moline Plow Company, the Minneapolis Threshing Machine Company and Minneapolis Steel and Machinery Company into the Minneapolis Moline Power Implement Company. Tough going. Not done looking.
Photos in this post are considered public domain in this country apparently.
Tough to get better photos from the historical society and have been bugger$ for other researchers.
Sorry. Trucking.
The search led me to this. Unbeknownst to me before. In the 1880-1920 trade catalogs section.
Oct 1st, 1910. Wilcox Motor Trucks.
Marshall Street, Tenth to Eleventh Avenue Northeast Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Note by this time they were using the word aluminum instead of aluminium for the engine crankcase.
That alum word search/definition/time-line is expansive.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Some have seen this truck before....apologies if this is old news...Much like Jim Kraut's REO Model H shown on page#2, this is my 1912 Model H. Just finished the engine pan, which seems to be a common missing item on many early "Total Oil Loss" vehicles. Could be that it weights 65 lbs. and is such a chore to remove and install it. Many thanks to Vic Macek who helped out with fabrication photos and sketches

Hi Herbie:
It is, at least most of it is. The front poles, slats, frame, and one of the bed mounts were remade.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Now that is a fine looking delivery. I believe it is built on a Flanders 20 chassis. Maybe 1911 or so. The hood shape looked familiar and the hump for the rear spring clearance in the splash apron convinced me.
Here is a 1912 for comparison. This 1911 shows why the hump for the spring is needed.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
There are so many different truck makers each with many different models. It's hard to sort them all out. Packard, GMC, Rapid and several others made ones with big tall radiators like that. However, I believe this one is an Alco. The front spring hanger and controls above it seem to match.

With the louvered side panel removed I see a Buda or very similar engine.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Don't believe everything you see. While looking a little farther I see this photo:
https://www.car-revs-daily.com/2014/04/ ... nce-truck/
and https://shiawasseehistory.com/gmc.html
http://getyourthought.blogspot.com/2009 ... truck.html
Everything below and in front of the seat the seat looks the same as the Alco to me. (OK, different wheels) I get the "GMC from Rapid to ... Reliance" but don't see where Alco comes in.
No big deal. Just difficult to keep up.

Me again. After looking at other Alco trucks I can only conclude that the photo by vanderbuiltcupraces is not really an Alco.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Herb! What a wonderful photo of the Packard truck. Almost sixteen thousand miles, inferred as one "tour". There's got to be a story here - any clues ??
(Four thousand miles on a set of tires doesn't sound too good, but I'd bet it was great mileage in that era !)

And a slightly older Leyland pictured in 1920 being loaded with marble for the New Zealand Parliament buildings then under construction.
Of interest is the trailer in use ! Luckily they did not have to tow that very far, but it was through the city....... They must have had understanding policemen I would think.

Well, Herb, it appears the sign on the truck bed looks more like a Brunswick sign in my imagination than it does in real life! I should have at least pulled out a record and looked at the label, but I thought there was a chance my memory was trustworthy. It double-crossed me.

That is very true Dan. This photo of my YPC Bus chassis only gives a hint of the abuse these fenders saw.
The lumpy texture was not anything I could straighten out. I traded for a better pair that could be used as patterns. They had also welded plates to the frame to mount a snow plow blade. Getting ever ounce of service out of these things was paramount especially during the depression. When did I do that?

Wow !! That takes me back, Rich ! 55 years to be exact !
As a fellow rust and fragment collector back then, frankly,I thought you'd gone too far that time ! You certainly vindicated your choice in subsequent years. Your YP bus is a work of art, and I'll treasure the memory of a ride in it as long as I live !!

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Not only was it an imposing project but expensive. $250 for the pair of trucks. It took 12 years to get into a place I could work on it and 18 years to complete the rebuild. For those who haven't seen the photos of it here is this thread;

I've seen them do that before, putting the cowl lamps out front and the headlamps on the cowl. Whatever works I guess.

FWD built all sizes of trucks. That radiator shape was typical of most of them. This one is about that size.

Thanks Rich. I'm learning some from the identifications on this forum, thanks largely to you ! The driver is bundled up, so it's cold weather. One form above the sideboard looks like a pumpkin, but I can't really tell. I find the loads being hauled in these old photos almost as interesting as the trucks themselves !
And my thanks too, Herb. I really enjoy these photos !!

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
There's a Sandy Creek, New York, Pennsylvania and South Carolina. This is most likely New York, Oswego County. Apparently there was a significant lumber industry in the area. That appears to be a young lady driving the yoke of oxen.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
I agree with the "New York, Oswego County" theory. They had a 1825 to 1925 centennial and that is what I think I read. "The clearing of the forest furnished employment, and the manufacture of potash and the sawing of lumber became a source of income. As late as 1860 there were eleven saw mills and two shingle mills..." according to one account. They certainly were well equipped to haul lumber weren't they?

Then sometimes the truck needs to be used to the haul the engine-powered air compressor to tear up the streets so the trucks can do more.
I'm stuck with a gasoline powered non-rotating jack hammer instead of these handy air operated hammers.

The name Schramm comes up with all sizes of compressors with different motors. This one has similar manifolds and the stack through the hood like the CCBC photo. It may be a Buda motor. Any other guesses?

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
There is an excellent old movie, probably late 1920s, which I think is titled "They Drive By Night". It's B&W, of course, with sound. It's an early trucker drama. It may star Humphrey Bogart, and does feature lots of old trucks.

I believe the plate on the hood says "Federal Six". I'm thinking 1929 or '28.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
In that same photo book was this 1925 HUG truck. I'm not sure we have seen any in this tribute to trucks. This one is shown ready for a forth of July parade which it didn't finish. The Magneto burned out. I had cautioned the owner that magneto plugs should be gapped tighter than distributor plugs. He hadn't and couldn't remember what gap they did have. (not the problem for T plugs)
C.J. Hug was unhappy with performance of trucks for his paving business so he built his own in 1921. Production stopped in the 1940s after 4,000 trucks. This one was restored with it's 34 hp 4cylinder Buda engine. When did I do that?

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Yes, near the grain elevator. Larry P. told Joe about it and claimed it was fair game. Several of us pried it out of the frozen ground and put it on the trailer pictured in the link. Joe managed to get it running. Soon after it was claimed to be another fellows grandfather's truck. He had two of then running on his farm back in the teens. Joe lost out but had the best time spent with it. Later in life someone let the water freeze in it over the winter.
Long story short but some sad events.
