Negotiating the pass between Ouray and Silverton Colorado. Loaded that heavily, I'm guessing the team is hitched on to assist traction. Rich E. can tell us the year and model of the White.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
This happened with a T car. My dad had two brothers. They sat in the back seat and they told me of a trip to Yosemite, probably sometime in the 1920's. When they came to a hill my grandfather said "It's time" and the three boys would get out and push. They were in low gear. I haven't any idea what road they were on, but must have been very steep and probably rocky.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
I am pleased to see that. I have one somewhere at about the same angle but in snow piled that high on each side. Several of the National Parks purchased White Buses during the teens and twenties. Rocky Mountain Park had some painted a dark red or maroon. It looks like a TEB of 1916 or 1917. I believe the plate is a 1923. The Parks auctioned off obsolete buses after replacing them. They had been well maintained and were purchased by all sorts of concerns to use as buses, if the bodies were still reasonably solid, or as chassis for other uses.
They look like tourists or maybe it was a shuttle service between the two towns.
At any rate I think it would have been a blast on that ride. Those buses hold just the right number of people to inspire great conversations or break out in song.

Hauling sheep. Identify the truck ? This may be Australia. That's a TT behind it, though.

I don't know what the big truck is. That looks like a Buick just beyond it. The tag on the TT could be a 1920s Texas tag.

The truck appears to be a mid-'20s International and the car is a Star, not a Buick.

The Star: A poor man's Buick. Star automobiles were sold in at least one sales territory in Texas, FWIW. There used to be the front half of one mounted on a pole along I-20 in west Texas.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Nice photo. The crew got all dressed up.
That appears to be a Mack AB, not the more familiar AC with the "Bulldog" front end. I have seen headlights placed where cowl lights usually are before but it is unusual. Those look like Victors or similar.
I like it.

That arrangement would give the brake some advantage ... until it overheated. I assume the church building is sitting on the ground, and not on the back of the truck.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
It sure looks like the church house could be loaded on the truck, Pat, but I'm pretty sure it's in the background.
Gets my mind wandering to a little booklet put out by Eastman Kodak many many years ago titled "How to Make Good Pictures" which warned against making such photographic gaffes. They're fun, though !
Good thought, tje brake arrangement could definitely fade when overheated. I'd guess the truck was probably geared low enough to avoid such a catastrophe ?
Great photo !

I don't know my Model AA trucks but that looks like a '29 with and extra (dead?) rear axle.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
It's definitely a 28 or 29 AA. I've only seen one set of the wire wheels on an AA. I suspect they were used on the earlier AAs, and that they were soon obsoleted in favor of disc wheels, which were adaptable to dual rear wheel setups. I'd love to have a 1930 AA SRW with the wire wheels and an express type bed.

Neat puzzle. It would help to know something about the photo - name of the hardware company would indicate U. S., Canada or U. K., perhaps Australia. Poses lots of questions, such as, how widely were Renault trucks marketed ?

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
There was a W. A. L. Thompson born near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He moved to Kansas in May 1869. He was the owner of a general store. Then founded the W. A. L. Thompson Hardware Company. He started with a modest stock but built it up to one of the largest retail establishments in Kansas.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
I believe Dennis is right. Very interesting! Both arrangements are similar, possibly four complete chassis amidships ? Four model Ts knocked down wouldn't overload those big trucks. I'd guess three tons at the most. Wonderful photos ! Who knew ? I've seen many pictures of Fords shipped by rail, but this is a first for me !

Yeah, I saw the truck was carrying knocked-down new cars - I was kidding by calling his load "trash" and "scrap metal".
Also, I let myself get talked into making a mess of the spelling of Duey's name. When I was typing, I first spelled it correctly but spellcheck highlighted it. I changed it, trying different versions until spellcheck was happy. Sorry, Duey.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Thanks for posting those. Here is what David Greenless had to say about the last one. Yes, "Who knew?"
"This photo is perhaps one of the most entertaining and interesting pre-1930 car dealership images we have ever seen. The photo was staged to show
the latest shipment of Fords to arrive at Frank Boyd Ford Sales and Service, a small town agency located in Hillsborough, New Hampshire.
After studying a large scale photo of the truck and its cargo being shipped in knocked-down or partially assembled form, we have been able to determine
just what was loaded on it. At least two Ford Model TT Truck and possibly three Model T Car chassis minus wheels are loaded vertically on the sides of
the truck and on the bed in the center.
Crates containing front and rear fenders are mounted on a rack above the cab and the front of the truck. In the middle between the stacked chassis can be
seen the wheels and tires and other parts. The bed and the rack on the rear are carrying both roadster and touring car bodies. The photo appears to date
from the 1917 to 1924 period."

I would imagine that it wasn't only the horses who were deeply affrighted by this ghostly, hissing, hearse-like vehicle when it appeared in a 100% horse-powered environment ! It kinda scares me even now !!
(but I gotta love that it's a steamer !!)

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
That is a mighty fine depiction.
In normal driving, the steam cars were for the most part very quiet. At times, they do make some unnerving sounds that would frighten man or beast. Even the gas cars with proper mufflers could be not that loud. The unnatural shape and motion might have been the worst problem for animals. Probably the earliest were the noisiest.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Last word on frightening horses - born and raised with "infernal machines" of every description, our horses have always taken them in stride. On pasture bordering the neighbor's lane, Lizzie gave them a real scare when I drove past them, the first time they ever saw her in motion. I guess there's just "something" about a horseless carriage ? (That was one time only. They'd settled down on my return trip, and have accepted her as common place ever since. )

Great photos, I’ve loved trucks since I was a kid. If you get to the Richmond, VA area the Keystone truck and tractor museum is really worth a visit. I’ve been once, plan to go Back again.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
According to the caption with the photo, Lakewood is a part of Maple bluff, a suburb of Madison Wisconsin. The Wisconsin plate is likely a 1914. In 1914 "Henry Ford raised his workers' pay to $5 a day". " $1 in 1914 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $29.80 today."
$4.47 to the Golf Grounds today?

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
The inflation calculator may not be entirely accurate, but it gives a good perspective on values from then to now. Ford's $5 per day equates to $18.62 per hour, but that was the minimum rate. Guys sweeping the floors made that much. Skilled workers made more. I find it very interesting to compare the value of a dollar in those times with today's purchasing power (or lack thereof )

Some excellent photos!
Really like the parts carrying trucks! Dealerships, aha.
That's A-OK Dan. Quite used to it. A third grade substitute called out for Diane after we handed papers in. Nobody said anything. Diane? Diane?
A shy, now perturbed boy realizes and says "That's me." Guess my penmanship was atrocious then too.
Heck, some Asian countries pronounce it Dwin.
p.s. Now some will think David Dewey posted it. Or one of us won the '48? election...

This is a real puzzler, Duey.
The radiator looks like either a Locomobile or a water-cooled International, but I can't find a contemporary photo or ad for either that decisively confirms it. The flat-fronted and shallower radiator top tank seems to rule out Peerless.
Obviously the truck in your photo is likely a one ton (or more) truck and not the light wagon international in the photo, but it is strikingly similar and not all heavy-duty International trucks had the "shovel nose".

My observations would be that they must have had good sales
representation in the Seattle area, as I have stumbled across a
fair number of them over the last 50-some years. Port Angeles
was just a short hop across the Sound from Seattle.

This is interesting to me. How the dump box works is unusual. I know what brand the truck is since it was made in Omaha, Nebraska. The lumber building in the background was replaced in 1965 by a new factory. I worked there for a few years.

They used trucks like that for picking melons and vegetables when I lived in Arizona. At packing plant, they side dumped the melons onto a sloped ramp to conveyer belt for sorting and packing.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Great Stuff Guys! I always enjoy seeing these. Herb's photo of the Omak baseball team looks like an Alco truck, about 1913. "In addition to automobiles, the American Locomotive Company manufactured over 1,000 Alco trucks from 1909 to 1913. A cab-over-the engine design was universal on the Alco trucks, ranging from 2 to 6 tons. Maximum speed ranged from 8 mph for the heaviest Alco to 17 mph for the 2-ton Alco."
Imagine baseball in the teens.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
That last picture of the ice truck reminds me of when I was a boy. We had an ice box and it had a big block of ice in it. When we needed more ice, my mom would hang a sign in the window and the ice truck would stop and the man would bring a block of ice. Those blocks were about a foot square. Maybe 10 inches? Us kids would hang along in case a few chips of ice fell and we would grab them. Later we got a "Coldspot" refrigerator from Sears.

Rich, I helped Amish neighbors as a kid cut ice and fill the icehouse with a rig that looked like that. Sure was nice in July putting up loose hay to have ice on hand for icecream.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Up to about 1975 we had an "old time" ice house. The old gent who ran it had converted to freezing blocks in steel tanks, tapered to release the blocks which went into a wooden storage building insulated with sawdust. He charged two cents a pound. When asked why he was still charging "Depression" price, he replied, "Ice ain't worth more'n that." He sold the ice plant and his house which were on a frontage property, and of course it was all cleared off for "improvements". We helped them move, and among the artifacts was an ice saw/sled like the one Rich posted - but Cheby powered.

Dan,
No problem I've been called much worse. Thank for the ID on the truck.
Rich,
I'm guessing the winch was used to load cargo.
