If that big guy on the left would sit on the end of the log I bet the front end of that TT would come up 6' off the ground.

It looks foreign maybe English to me. The second one is not a White but has a similar radiator shape.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
That is an unusual one. Nothing looks familiar to me except the muffler is similar to what one-cylinder Cadillacs used. About 1910 and enough room for a four cylinder engine.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Looks like platform rear spring,( one either side and one across the rear)
Muncie trans axle with brakes on the chain sprocket.
Still could be a Two cylinder as the flywheel is close to the front, may be with water and fuel containers under bonnet/hood.
My thoughts....N.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
I believe I have stumbled on to what that truck is. Chase Motor Truck Company (1907-1919) was a manufacturer of trucks in Syracuse, New York. The vehicles were known for their air-cooled two cycle engines. While these could be other models I believe the platform rear springs, the steering configuration and the hood with belt are all features of the car Herb has presented. Also the frame rails seems to be a wooden slab. A shroud under the engine for directing air looks the same too.

By golly I think you are right.
I remember seeing a Chase truck in a museum once. As I recall it was un restored.

Fine for overweight cargo, 1929.
I found this photo first in some random archives, then went looking to see if there was any associated detail. What I found was:
"CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. A motor lorry which, with its load, weighs over ten tons, must, according to regulation, have six wheels. In the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr E. C. Lcvvey, S.M., Nieman Bros. (Mr Smithson) were fined £2 and costs for having a weight of 12 ton llcwt. on four wheels, and £3. and costs for having an unlicensed lorry. Mr H. Macintosh, Chief Traffic Inspector, said that the overweight cargo was the first of its kind in New Zealand."
Although I can't be certain this is the same 'overweight cargo' described in the article it would seem quite possible. Traction engine's aren't the lightest of machine, and I don't expect many were transported this way.
I'd be interested to hear if someone was able to identify the make and/or model of truck?

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
That is quite a load. I think the truck is an international. The nameplate above the louvers is typical. They also used the drum lights on the cowl quite often.

Those are Sterling trucks. Founded in 1907 by William Sternberg as the Sternberg Motor Truck Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Sternberg changed the company name to Sterling at the onset of World War I. The company was bought by White Motor Company on June 1, 1951.

Re: Fine for overweight cargo, 1929.
Thanks for the information everyone.
That it's an International truck makes some sense, given the original source of the photograph. This came from a company that did photography for International here in NZ, evidenced by various other photographs in the collection of agricultural equipment manufactured by International, as well as several of failed components (axles, splines etc).
I agree the subject of this photo seems a fairly unique setup. That and the identification of the truck reminded me that I still own an International (Bulldozer) myself, although I've not seen it for a long time.
Please excuse me for the brief thread drift but if I can take a moment out you may be amused by a photo of me clearing some gorse with the International, note that the smoke was due to oil dripping on the exhaust manifold - not the motor, which runs very sweetly, despite appearances:

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Luke, I thought that was a T6 or a TD6, but what is a BTD6? I've never seen that designation before. Cool Dozer though, what ever it is. I grew up around old 'Dozers and other heavy equipment from back in the mid '50's, still have a lot of interest in all of the old equipment from back then. I used to run a few old Cat dozers and built some timber clearing equipment for them back in a past life in the late '70's/early '80's. Did a lot of welding/repairs/ fabrication on heavy equipment in the late '60's/early '90's time frame, I really enjoyed it. I watch a lot of videos on Youtube, there is a whole lot of stuff on there that I haven't seen and or have forgotten about. Thanks for posting that. Dave

I believe the "B" designation means British Made. We have "BM" tractors as well. We had Inters brought from the US as well as Britain - hence the differentiation.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Adrian's got it.
We have both TD6 and BTD6 here in NZ, my understanding is that the former isn't electric start. I think a neighbour had one once and it had a pony motor, much like the Cat D4U etc.
I've got to be careful what I say here (looking furtively around) but I've been known to watch the odd 'dozer video from the 'tube too. Mostly whenever I'm looking at buying another one that I've not had before and want to know something about them.
Presently I've got a wee Komatsu as well as the Inter, and am trying not to get a Mitsi or Case (both for sale at the moment!).
Anyway here's another photo of the BTD6 (with daughter) a few years ago:
And, as a bonus, here's how I used to get to the farm occasionally (it was a short field and although I had a Cherokee in/out there a few times I preferred this Cessna):

That's an amazing set-up. When G.M.C. develops a modern electric truck, they should use that phot as the center piece of the ad campaign.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
The posting by Mr. Iffrig of 15 May brings to mind one I saw in Cody, Wyoming in the '80's. The oilfield was in one of it's Boom and Bust cycles, and activity was at it's peak, wells were being drilled where they had never thought of drilling before. Anyhow, while standing in front of the old Cody Hotel, here came an oilfield winch truck with the top half of a jack knife rig attached to his fifth wheel. Behind it was the top half itself, 90' at least, the back end was sitting on a tandem trailer, very basic one, a tandem set of wheels and axles with a fifth wheel arrangement on top so the rig or load could swivel. The novel part to me was some poor soul in a very heavy set of coveralls and a pair of goggles that was sitting on this contraption and steering it. That day was a cold one, close to zero or so, light snow, miserable weather to be out in, unprotected from the elements and road splash, and not looking at all happy about it. You do what you have to do, especially in the oilfield, and this worked, saved a lot of time and etc., when rigging down or up. Always wished that I had taken a picture, and I hope they payed that poor soul a little extra.

Hi Rich, I was just watching a youtube clip by "rainhill" from Canada showing one of these LINN crawler based trucks (restored) driving along the road. It is BIIGGG and impressive.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Lots of white tires there. You would think they would mostly be 30" tires for Model Ts etc. They look a little bigger but maybe not.
This is the Conda Bus ("The Galloping Goose") in Soda Springs, ID. It was built from a White truck chassis to transport passengers from Conda to Soda Springs between 1920 and 1936. "The town of Conda was built in 1920 by the Anaconda Copper Mining Company to house the miners and their families engaged in the Company’s new phosphate ore mining operations about eight miles north of Soda..." The town of Conda no longer exists. In 1960 J.R. Simplot (New Mine Owner) gave the bus to the Poulsens, Soda Springs residents, who had lived in Conda. "The Poulsens gifted the bus to the City of Soda Springs in 1982 and it was put in Corrigan Park."

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
This is probably a foolish question, but here goes:
I once read a post on this forum that commented on the chain drives used in old trucks. The comment was something l like, "...and with the chain drive there's no differential to worry about". That doesn't pass the smell test with me. Common sense would indicate there must be a differential on the drive axle. The same "differential" speed dynamic would apply, chain drive or not.
Am I missing anything??

Henry and Charlie, that's kind of like the post a while back on here that a TT worm drive rear end can't be pushed because the wheels will slide. If that was the case, the wheels would slide every time it was shifted from low to high as it went through neutral. Come on people, THINK!!! Sorry for the rant. Dave

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
There have been Linn trucks mentioned but how about Linn AND Lombard trucks. Just a couple of links.
Similar trucks.
See if you can find both of their tube links. The fellows at the Maine Forest and Logging Museum sure love their Lombard trucks and the King of Obsolete WAY up in Canada where the wind doesn't blow uses his Linn for work and play and you can see the unique sleds used behind these trucks if you look. I'll see if I can find KoO's tube clips.
A taste. Interesting people!

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Thanks Duane. This is becoming quite a collection of trucks.
What a great resource. Here is another photo in my file. It reads "Major Laws Pres. W. C. White..." and "built to Army Specifications". I mentioned what a great resource the White Motor Co. was to me in the '60s when I was researching my vehicles. The 4 5¢ stamps are as much a contrast to today as is the interest they took in my project. How many companies would sent their file photos for free to a 18 year old kid. One heavier envelope had a couple dozen stamps on it. When I asked if I could pay the postage or send the photos back Martha wrote "No, this closes out our files". At any rate I am certainly pleased that Herb started this thread and so many are enjoying it.
Thanks
Rich

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
I was curious at to the 40/8. A search on Google turned up this,
The Forty and Eight is an organization of veterans of the United States armed forces. Its official name is "La Société des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux," which is French, and translates as "The Society of Forty Men and Eight Horses."
Is this right or just coincidence?

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
That is as I was told Jim.
I was up near Cedar Falls Iowa a couple of years ago visiting a friend. They were getting ready for an Old Time engine and farm show. One of the things on display was a rail car from France that was used to haul the forty men and eight horses. The man there said that as a sign of appreciation the country of France gave one of those rail cars to each state in America. I think the one I saw was quite old but was being preserved under a pavilion.

Herb the article I found the information in mentioned the rail cars as one of their symbols. I want to thank you for the clue that sent me that way. A neat piece of history I never knew before. The old trucking-old thread is by far one of my favorites, so many truck I've never seen before. Thank you

We know how to have fun, don't we?
By quite old for the rail car I meant it was pre WWI. Maybe 1880's.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Yes Duane, things were very different in the '60s yet I see that same generosity and willingness to help here on the forum so often. It's a wonderful thing.
Martha also took the time to copy the entire 15-45 Instructions and Parts Book for me. She didn't want to let the original go. I don't blame her. I have passed copies on to a few other owners and shared the photos where I can in gratitude for her help. I thought it might be interesting to show a bit of it. It was invaluable in the restoration of the Bus.
Martha also took the time to copy the entire 15-45 Instructions and Parts Book for me. She didn't want to let the original go. I don't blame her. Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Well Rich the generosity of White reminded me of John Deere sending me things (all the way to New Zealand no less) in the 1970's. I received original owners manuals and parts books and even a full set of original slide water decals for the family 1936 JD 'AR'.
The JD folk then were very helpful indeed. Digital archives are great for information, but just not the same for a young lad as getting a bulky envelope in the 'snail mail'
Cheers
Adrian
Picture of my father on the old JD back in the 40's (my grandfather bought it new probably less than 10yrs before - she had a real hard life that is for sure, there does not seem to be too much wear on the lugs at that point in time). Dad is passing the old girl on to me now:

This is a very interesting thread.
Just dawned on me Herb! The International truck of Lammert's Furniture on May 21st is what the chassis of my '28 used to/is supposed to look like! SF-24 or something... Very cool!
Adrian: Cool (AR) and Hehehe (F-14)!

That is a Federal I believe. They must have made millions of those Goodyear Diamond treads, mostly in 24" size. The Parks services used them on their trucks. White rubber was used first and then black. Again, acetylene lights were used throughout the '20s on a lot of trucks.
Great Photo.

Rich, regarding companys helping you...
I bought a South Bend mill in about 1995 for the price of scrap. Very nice machine but the quill bearings were rumbling and tight. So I called South Bend for help:
*ring-ring*
Hello, this is South Bend Machine, how may I help you?
Hi, I've purchased an old South Bend Mill and have a couple of questions and wondered if you had any parts drawings or could sell parts?
You need to talk to Bill...

Hello, this is South Bend Machine, how may I help you?
Hi I just called and talked to Bill
He cut you off, didn't he?
yep
OK, what's your contact info?
1 week later I got 3 "D" size old blueprints of the entire head assembly, original like new sales literature, an original lubrication chart and an original Parts List with all South Bend, Timken and National Seal parts info. The machine runs flawlessly to this day. Bill, as you may have guessed, must never have worn hearing protection as was typical of his generation and was deaf as a post, and I half suspect he watched my machine go out the door when it was new.
Fond memory of an era which won't be repeated.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Absolutely cool story Scott!
I'll bet I talked to Bill real close to then also.
Had to call back twice and assure him my new lathe only had a three digit serial.
Helen must've been at the front or parts desk too as she's on a note.
Second call: A book was pulled out, the pages turned and he found my serial.
#926 was sold in June of 1911 to F. E. Satterlee in Minneapolis.
Satterlee was a machinery sales outfit and a few pieces are still around.

Duane
that's really neat, and very similar stories, huh?
BTW, vintagemachinery.org has photos and SN of lots of these lathes and sometimes you can find lathes near your SN and just look at them
It's nice that South Bend lives on as a name, but you'll never replicate what I imagine to be a place with a wood floor, reeking with the wonderful aroma of cutting fluid and hot oil. Here's to old timers, everywhere.
