Question about hardware for brass Rands windshield hinges

Post by Tbird » Tue Jul 05, 2022 6:01 pm

So I have a original brass Rands windshield with its hinges. I believe this was original because of the plate glass that was still in the frame and the windshield Rands tag. I noticed that the 4 screws that held the hinges to the top and bottom of the frame have bolt heads. I then noticed that the vendors sell round head slotted machine screws for the hinges. Another brass Rands windshield that I live looked at that has original hinges also have the bolt heads for the hardware. I might also add that the frames are the later style meaning the upper half is smaller than the bottom for use with the one piece dash. I’m working on a 12 with the two piece dash and want to use the correct hardware for the hinges. I will not be using the windshield frame with the unequal halves but one with equal halves. Can anyone verify if the bolt heads or the slotted round head is correct.
Thanks
Mike Bird

The bolts are correct for earlier in 1911. By 1912 the slot heads replaced them. All were brass or brass plated.

Did the 10-11 windshields have unequal halves? I thought the earlier windshields had equal halves with the two piece dash… could be wrong, I’m just not sure.

My 09 has unequal halves as does the 10.

In my ignorance at the time I pieced together my 1912 van, I used brass dome nuts with short lengths of all-thread to make "bolts'. They look the part, so I'm not about to fret over them.

Allan does you can have two piece dash or single?
Is your windshield equal panes? I read that cars with fixed roof heights used equal panes with the two piece dash and later unequal halves with the one piece dash. I’m using a two piece dash with a windshield with equal halves. I just want to use the correct era hardware on the windshield, whether that be the round head slotted or the bolt heads.

I see this add for a "Rands" windshield. It is a different hinge but it has hex bolts. That suggests to me that hex may have been used by Rands.

Other than that I have seen no evidence in other than round head slotted bolts in my limited experience. I doubt that few would argue about using round heads but some might disagree with hex heads.
This is just my take on the matter.

When did I do that?

Mike, the dash on my van is one piece. I was fortunate to be able to make an exact copy of an original, right down to the unevely spaced screw holes for the brass edge trim. The windscreen has two same sized panes.

I have seen both even and uneven size windshield panes on either single or two piece firewalls. I gave up trying to figure out which was correct for my 1910 and 1912 and assumed either was correct.. I finally chose which style to use according to whether or not the center channels were in my line of vision.
On my 1910 (two piece firewall) a windshield with uneven size panes placed the center channels in the wrong place for me.

my 1910 has a Rand windshield (oringal to the car) with even halfs. An original 1912 i once had, the bottom half was wider.

Richard,
What hardware on the hinges? Round head slotted or hex head bolts?

Brass plated bolts on the 1910, screws on the 1912. Both Rands windshields. Photo shows the 1912.

I have a late 1911. ( Nov ). It has a Rands windshield. The bolts are Brass plated with square heads. I'm not sure that a Rands windshield even had screws with slots.
