Help to identify make and year of car

Post by DLodge » Sun Feb 02, 2020 11:42 pm

A good friend of mine just received a huge envelope of family photos that included this picture of her uncle as a young man. She asked me to identify the make and year of the car and I had no idea. I told her that I had access to an amazing source of automotive historical knowledge and that I would see what I could find out. I'm thinking that there are people here who can identify the car.

Anyone?

Those headlights are a dead giveaway. If you go to Google images and enter 1920 Pierce, 1921 Pierce, 1922 Pierce, etc., I expect you'll find a match.

I'm guessing this car is closer to a 1925.

Perhaps the license plate might give a clue as to “no newer than” ? I have a feeling Larry is right, although Pierce never changed much year to year, you’d have to be a “Pierce Guy” to pin down slight changes. The tubular bumper gave way to a more conventional style in ‘29.

Oddly, those hallmark headlamps were illegal in New York State, cars sold there had to be fitted with “normal” lamps and fenders.

It is a series 80, 1925 or '26. I had a '25 series 80 sedan for a few years. Wonderful cars! The series 80 continued into '27 with some detail changes, and was replaced by a similar series 81 for '28. The series 81 was similar mechanically, but considerably different in trim and details.

You can find out what city it came from and look up the car dealerships and home in on the most probable dealerships.

Thanks to everyone for your help.

He was born in 1904, so he was in his twenties in the picture. It was taken somewhere in or near St. Louis, MO.
