Non-Tarnishing Coolant

Post by Jugster » Thu Feb 13, 2020 12:53 pm

The neck of my radiator drips anti-freeze and this tarnishes the heck out of my brass radiator. Of course, I need to get that fixed, but in the meanwhile, is there a coolant (besides distilled water) that does not tarnish brass?

I use distilled water with an anti-corrosion additive, I think I used "Water Wetter". I also heard water soluble oil (cutting oil) added to distilled water will retard corrosion. Of course, neither of these is antifreeze, so one must either drain in winter, or store at well above freezing temperatures.

If you don't have cutting oil, you can use water pump lubricant aka "anti-rust" which is also water soluble oil.

The drawback is that it can effect rubber hoses over time.

Water pump lubricant is getting harder to find these days at the auto parts store but NAPA does carry it:

Other brands of water pump lubricant that your local auto parts store might carry are Gunk, Bardahl, or Motor Medic.
