Speedster modifications contest

Post by AndyClary » Wed Feb 19, 2020 2:42 pm

I'm about ready to assemble my Mercury. Another thread is talking about how stock their speedsters are, so I thought I'd give you a chance to guess what is not modified on mine. If you guess right it will give me a chance to change it. Little things like fasteners and shackles don't count. I don't have a photo to post now, but the before is in my profile.

I’ll take the first shot, and say that yur front axle is not modified...!

Cuz there is no way yur goin to modify the special Mercury dropped axle! But I guess the aftermarket axle is kind of a modification to the original chassis...? So guess I’ll keep noodling...

No I'm not going to modify that axle, but like you said, it's not stock.

Here is one from the REMTC website. Others are in my dead phone. I'll try to find more.

Andy,
What is a “stock speedster”.... other than an oxymoron ?
I don’t know why I turned out this way. My parents were decent people 🤪

There are a couple of threads going about using stock drivetrain in a speedster. Not a practice I support.

A Ford at full throttle going down hill with a stiff tailwind, no brake band, and the Weight Watchers' Convention "Before" models on board.

Would you call this a speedster if all it had was that great looking exhaust?

Yes Frank I would, infact I got to drive it. It's a real nice piece, ran & drove very nice, some one spent a lot of time on it.

Speedsters are very individual. If you want to run with no modifications that's fine. I would rather have all the cool period speed parts taken off shelves and run. Way too many good pieces languish because, for some people, it is enough to say they have them. Example, there are just over 70 Mercury Speedsters left, but how many get driven? When my restoration is finished i intend to drive mine everywhere.

I’m with you Andy...! No matter how many thousands of hours (and dollars) it might take to bring some these really neat accessories back to life😉

Some of the original era accessories on my Model T speedster:
Mercury Body #140
Mercury dropped front axle/rear 'kick-ups'
Mercury fenders/mounts
Mercury cast aluminum step plates, steering wheel & windshield
Mercury German nickel-silver radiator shell/Fedders radiator/Boyce Motometer
Mercury 5-piece hood
Drum headlights
Cowl lights
Frontenac OHV
Zenith HP5a side draft carb
Bosch 'front plate' distributor
Rocky Mountain "Six Speed" transmission
NuTone electric "aoogha" horn
Apco horn button on steering wheel
and a few more waiting on the shelf to be installed

My grandson-in-law Nick and I agree, Model T accessories are a lot more fun seen and used on a speedster. Andy, I'm sure you have much more accessories for your Mercury Speedster! I hope to see it some day.

Ken

Nice car Ken. I'll start posting photos when I start reassembly. My radiator was painted. I stripped it to plate and found out why it was painted. It had too much damage to reasonably repair and plate, so it got repainted.

The answer to the original question is the front wishbone, it has not been modified. Yet.
