New Style Clutch Pedal Shaft
I've been working on T's all of my adult life, over 60 years to be exact, and have never run across a T with the early style clutch pedal shaft! According to the 1927 parts book, this style was used up through 1925. Every T I've ever owned has had the late style. It seems most of them must have been converted. I have two 13's and both had the late style shaft when I got them. It must have been a popular change over. I'm thinking of cutting off the end of the early shaft like it says to do in the service book. Next question is, if the early style shaft is to be used, it appears the band spring must be on the shaft before the hogs head is lowered onto the crankcase.

If I remember rightly. the only reason to cut a early one or fit the late one was if you are fitting removable ear bands.

Yes, with non-demountable bands, the hogshead comes off. The pedal shaft and springs stay on, even the nuts and washers for the brake and reverse, only the low speed adj. screw comes out.
That way, easy to put back on, the pedal shafts fall into the band lugs, assuming you wrap twine or wire around them first

More fun to do if the hogshead is the lighter alum casting!

My 23 runabout had its original non demountable bands and long low pedal shaft when I bought it. I like using cotton bands so, I'm changing it over to the later style set up.

There have been some post of late talking about leaving the long shaft as it provides better support. Yes it would mean pulling the hogs head, but in reality how often do we change bands?
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

My question still hasn't been completely answered! I have the bands in the engine, and the aluminum hogs head is off the car at the moment. Assuming I put the hogshead back on, what is the sequence of putting the clutch shaft band spring in? Should I have it on the clutch shaft when I lower the hogs head onto the crank case, or do I insert the spring through the adjusting hole? If so, I'm going to have to rotate the band clockwise a bit to get the right ear clear of the band, and then push it in bringing the band back up to it's operating position. I can't believe the Ford Service book says nothing about this operation!

Reading chapter 518 in the Ford Service might give a clue. If I read it right, the springs as well as the washers and nuts are left in place when the cover is set into place. No worries about lost parts!

Reading the Ford Service book gives no clue what so ever! That is why I posted this. I've re read the service book many times, and it doesn't say a thing about the spring being on the clutch shaft before lowering the hogs head onto the crankcase! I would like to hear from someone who has done this, as my experience is only with the late style clutch shafts.

The way I understand the service book it’s “understood “ or “assumed “ the reader would know the springs, washers and nuts are pre assembled in transmission cover.
The picture shows it put together before it’s lowered. Or that’s the way I understand it.
You may have to use a screwdriver to move the springs over a bit if you have to.
I think using a string or floss to hold the bands together works better than a clip.
