In September of 1928, Ford switched from using the Abell Starter Drive to the new Bendix Starter Drive. The Abell drive used a starter armature with a 1/2" diameter shaft. The new Bendix drive used a starter armature with a 5/8" shaft. The Abell drive and the Bendix drive look nothing alike. Shortly after the introduction of the new Bendix drive (and larger armature shaft) they introduced a Service Drive, A-11350-DR. The Service Drive would be a Bendix style drive for a 1/2" shaft and would require a modification of the original 1/2" armature shaft to fit it properly and to make it work. The A-11350-DR Service Drive was a service replacement only for the early starters using the 1/2" armature shaft.

What you are showing in the photos is an aftermarket/replacement service drive. I have about 3 or 4 of them and they look exactly the same. You can generally find the drives, but not the spring. The starter/Bendix spring from the Service Drive to the "modern" 5/8" drives are different.
