Re: Is The Date Accurate?
That can't be right, although it is an early car with tiller steering, 1889 would be very early ! probably around 1904ish ?
When in trouble, do not fear, blame the second engineer !

Re: Is The Date Accurate?
It’s either a 1900 Locomobile steamer or 01-02 CDO...but I can and have been proven wrong
I don’t know why I turned out this way. My parents were decent people.

Re: Is The Date Accurate?
I agree George on Stanley or Locomobile. The first Stanley was 1897 so 1889 could be transposed meaning 1898. I do that sort of thing all the time.
It is a delightful photo never-the -less.

Re: Is The Date Accurate?
If I may offer some information on this:
"Seeing a need for the services of a blacksmith, German Immigrant Folkert Sudenga opened the doors of his blacksmith shop in the summer of 1888 on main street George, IA. Calling his small shop the George Iron and Woodworks, Sudenga provided area farmers with shoes for their horses and replacement parts for their wagons. The business took hold and Sudenga’s sons Philip and George eventually joined their father in the shop in the early 1890’s. With the addition of the sons, the business grew. The Sudengas became know for reliable solutions to the inevitable equipment problems that arose for early area farmers. In 1898, the Sudengas produced a trip hammer, which was the first item to ever be manufactured in George."

It say's the photo was taken in 1944 but I disagree with that also.

Re: Is The Date Accurate?
While1889 is possible (three years after the Benz motorwagen), 1898 or 1899 is much more likely, especially if the car is a known make like Loco.
The inevitable often happens.

Re: Is The Date Accurate?
I believe it is a steam car. I couldn't find a Stanley with the sloping front floor. Now my guess is it may be a White. They started in 1900 I believe. However there were dozens of others that may have looked similar.
