Rough on Magneto - Found This

Hi Folks,

Everything new (engine and coils rebuilt, kevlar bands, oil, magneto terminal, etc.) with 500 miles/six months on my ‘25 RPU. Started running rough on magneto. Checking simple things first, I pulled the magneto terminal.

I removed the little toupee and found I could pick it up off the workbench with a magnet. Seems the bits of kevlar picked up some metal filings. Reassembled and it runs great again on magneto.

Sometimes it is the simple thing.

I would immediately be removing the inspection plate on the top of the hogshead and be looking for anything untoward. I wouldn't expect to be finding fluff from the bands if everything is right. Hope it's OK but I'd be checking.

Redleg- check regularly- if it happens again, then carefully inspect the three drums for a crack. But, if everything is new, as stated, probably not a problem. Maybe it's just one of the Kevlar bands that may not have gotten sealed good on the end and is un-raveling.

Hope you have an oil screen in your tranny, and if not might be time to put one in.

Thanks, folks. I changed the oil, cleaned the filter, and examined the drums. All looks good and running great.

‘Toupee’- that’s funny... you’ve received good advice John. Let me add my belief in the best accessory a Model T can have: outside oil line. I get plenty of flow from the mag terminal oil line to the front main bearing. You may have another design
