While we are sheltering in place, I thought an "Audience Participation" activity might offer some distraction. Get off the couch and post a photo of your antique, Model T era (1908-1927) license plate. Let's see how many years, states, and countries we can post.
Here is an Illinois license plate from 1915:

That’s neat Wayne. I’m assuming the slots are for the front plate held on the radiator?

Yes the slots are for mounting in front of the radiator. The plates themselves are huge: 7.25" H x 14.25" W.

1912 California plate on my '12 Touring. This is no doubt supposed to be on the front with a solid plate on the rear. But I only have the one plate, so on the rear it goes. DMV doesn't seem to know the difference.

Not a T but I'm proud of it. I think it was 1956 North Dakota issued pioneer plates. This is a 1912 Hudson that has #12 on it. This plate was issued to this car. Also have a standard ND plate for 1912.

"BERTS" was purchased new by my Grandfather, Bert Savage, in November 1925. This touring car has always been in our family and I am now the present caretaker. This picture was taken durning the filming of a movie "Just Like the Men" which is soon to be released and was originally written in 1912. The license plate is to honor the first owner.

Michael Peternell, that's a 1916 plate. Any chance the former owner thought the car was a '16?

Steve Jelf, actually Kansas didn't start dating plates until 1921. All from 1913-20 were undated.

Before 1913, many towns and cities issued their own plates. Here's a porcelain McPherson city plate I have registered on our 1910 touring.

This is the 1928 plate on the back of my 1913 touring. The car had the same number plate attached to the wood firewall and it had been there so long it had damaged the wood behind it. I have no reason not to believe this was the last year this car was registered and more than possible it has not run since 1928 also.

My Betsy is a 1924, but she was titled as a 1923 by the previous owner. I chose not to correct the year when I applied for a new title (one less thing to explain to the DMV).

I toyed with the idea of replacing my Missouri antique plate with an original year of manufacture plate, but which year? To cover both bases, I bought both a 1923 and a 1924 plate. Right now they are just hanging on my garage wall. :)

Leo, Anja's dad saved that one, she inherited it and so I now have it. I never knew the car it was on (a 1950-something Mercedes, I think), but the number looks like it was not long after the provincial letter designations were replaced with the two-letter, four-number plates.

There is a story about that car. The family was camping in Cornwall (caravan behind the car, tents for the kids). They had just pulled into the campground and the woman running it was looking at the license plate and said to Papa, "I'm trying to place your accent. Is it Dutch?" Her English accent caused "Dutch" to sound more or less like "Dotch." Papa saw her looking at the car and understood her to have said, "Is it a Dodge?" He answered, "No, it's a Mercedes." I think she was confused by the conversation. :D

I learned that when I bought and restored a tag when registering our 21 touring. The 1915 Kansas tag for our runabout restoration is currently on a book shelf waiting to be installed on the car. I'm hoping that the car will be all back together and back on the road in a month or so.

In Califunny the only plate that matter is the rear one, so you really don't need anything on the front...which was good for me, I couldn't keep my front plate on the front, it always no matter what I tried kept coming lose and falling off on one side (and always the same side too). I even tried tie wraps and it still came off on that same one side....the tie wrap wasn't broken or anything, just the plate wasn't on it, yet it was the night before when I put it on. :?

EDIT: 1919-1920 Colorado License Plate.

In 1920 Colorado had a welded plate the same as 1919 with a different "Seal" on it. Later in the year, the welded plates were running out and expensive to purchase (by the State) so they returned to stamping the plates as was done by most other states. The welded plates were an attempt to manufacture the plates by the State of Colorado instead of purchasing them from outside vendors.

Dale,
Arizona issued solid copper plates in 1932, 1933, and 1934. There were several years that plates were painted a copper color (1916, 1925, 1927, 1928, 1936, etc.). Today, Arizona issues solid copper plates for Horseless Carriage, Classic and Historical vehicles. The 1915 plate on my coupelet is only the second year that Arizona issued a license plate.

Most Texas license plate collectors will swear that 1924 is the first full size Texas plate with the year on it. I have original small size Texas plates dated 1921 and 1922. But also have this rare 1923 set (rare because state issued to owners weren’t dated) The Key is the first letter ‘D’ for dealer.

The picture of the car shows the original plate first used by my family in 1934. We also have the title, registration and window stickers from 1934.

The new plates are Illinois personalized plates. Each year classic car owners can get a custom plate that is good from July 1 until the Illinois state car show in September.
