I am replacing a top on a 1920 touring. The kit talks about placing the back straps from the car to the last bow. The car did not have the straps previously so I was wondering if someone could tell me exactly where to attach the straps? I know that it is the rear bow and back of car but is there a particular place along the back of the car and the back bow that I should place it. If a picture is available that would be great too. Thanks

This sketch is from Feb. 1922 Ford Owner Dealer, so likely a sketch of the touring tops of 1920-1922 so it should be helpful. Dimensions from center lines.

I believe you attach footman loops to the rear bow.

Dan and David's information is spot on. The strap on a '20 are made of woven cotton, front and rear, dyed black, and all hardware used on them is also a gloss black.

Thanks, about all to add is the fabric woven cotton straps you make have the proper buckle and the D-ring.

This install, by a previous forum post, shows that D-ring on the rear top L prop rod, anchoring the end of the strap, the other end is looped thru that footman loop on the wood bow.


And comparison to factory top install, with the usual winkles of the typical new top on a new T

I couldn't tell from the diagram (probably me) but about how far from the curve or the center do you attach the footman loops?

The drawing that Dan posted shows 20-1/2" from the centerline of the top to the center of the footman loop. That is confirmed by the factory drawing of the top.

No exact measurement is given, but the factory drawing clearly shows the loop approximately centered top to bottom on the inside surface of the rear bow.

Incidentally, the screws used to hold the footman loop are a #9 x 1" blued steel French (oval) head wood screw. These are included with the straps that I make, as Dan pointed out.
