Re: Social Distancing
I am glad that you enjoyed the ride! That steering wheel is a "Fat Man Wheel" too. It was in the car when I purchased it 3 years ago. Right after I got it running, the rear end gave out. I finally got time to rebuild it this winter. So, I have been getting it out on nice days. I used my cell phone to film the video. That is a little tricky while driving a T!!

Re: Social Distancing
Ever since I put in the new radiator, new wood blocks under the shelfs and new hood latches, it has a squeak. I am not sure if it is the hood, or the latches rubbing on the wood blocks?

Re: Today's Social Distancing Video
For today's video, I drove a little further southwest. I will post it once it uploads. I cut this one a little shorter because upload times have been in the 12-14 hour time frame. In this video, some of you will see a familiar sight. Does anyone have guess where I ended up?

Scott, what speed are you doing, and watching that left fender follow the yellow line she don't wander, real nice, liked the walk around too, very nice car..

Re: Today's Social Distancing Video
I am not sure of the speed? Just going with the feel and sound, probably 30-35 on the highway? The front end is pretty loose. I am in the process of rebuilding another front axle to swap it out with. Here are a couple of photos of the front axle. If you look closely, you can see all of the period correction devices in place to stabilize it. I have to say, they do work pretty well!!

Re: Today's Social Distancing Video
Ok, I took another long drive today and filmed over an hour of video. So, more to come! I brought along a GPS. My speed on the country roads is 28-32 MPH. On the highways about 35 MPH, any faster and it shakes and rattles quite a bit. I think once I get the front axle rebuilt and replace the loose wood spoked wheels, it might cruise decently at 40 MPH on the highway.

Steve, you are spot on again! It's back to work this afternoon for me, after our 1 week layoff! So, videos will have to take a back seat. Unless some one else has some to share? I did take an extra long drive yesterday, that way I still have more footage to work with.
Here is the sequel to yesterday's video.

Re: Today's Social Distancing Video
I have noticed that the coupe has been a little harder to start the past couple of days and it has a miss, until it warms up. I found the problem pretty quick. The porcelain is broken on #3 spark plug. It ran fine once it warmed up.

Re: Today's Social Distancing Video
That is so strange to see gravel roads in Indiana. You would think by now they would be paved. Here in Wisconsin you have to really look to find a gravel road, and that is mostly in the state and national forests.
Enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work.

Re: Today's Social Distancing Video
Dave: Take a look at the 'country' roads in Clark, Jackson, and Wood counties WI for starters. Every time I come 'home' to those places in WI I marvel that the dirt roads we drove in the 50's are now improved with some surface gravel, but still very little asphalt pavement. Drive careful, stay safe. jb

Re: Today's Social Distancing Video
There are actually a lot of gravel roads here in Indiana. Some of the more populated ones have been chip and sealed, but are not actually paved. There are even a few wet bridges.

I took this picture near Alamo because the sign is a joke. Going 35 mph on this road would jar your teeth loose. That is so strange to see gravel roads in Indiana.

I believe it's 400 South, just east of County Line/Mountain, heading for 825 West at Alamo. I came across on IN 234 from Cayuga.

Steve, I think I figured it out. You turned off of Mountain Rd/ Countyline Rd onto CR300S. You were just east of T&S Trash Service. On my next drive, I will confirm.

Re: Today's Social Distancing Video
Looking at the satellite view, I think you're right.
The counties complicate the geography by using different names for the same road, and the same name for different roads. The 300S in the last video is not the same 300S in my photo. Google adds another wrinkle by not showing counties at all.
While I'm griping I'll take a shot at INDOT too. Many state DOT websites provide excellent county maps. Wisconsin, Kansas, and Montana are excellent, and there are many others that are pretty good. Indiana has no county maps at all. But it's not alone. Some of the most tourist-oriented states are in the same basket. DOT websites for Wyoming, Colorado, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona have no county maps.

Steve, The 300S in your picture is in Montgomery County. The 300S in the video is in Fountain County. It is about 5-6 miles north and a about 3-4 miles west of there.

No, sometimes I have to go back and look at the map to remind myself where I was. I do a lot of my navigation by county road maps. A lot of state DOT websites have county maps that range from adequate to excellent. I consider the Kansas, Iowa, and Wisconsin maps very good. Unfortunately some states (Wyoming, Colorado, Indiana, New Mexico, and others) fail to provide any detailed maps. In those cases I turn to Google.
Iowa
Kansas
Wisconsin

Re: Today's Social Distancing Video
I have been asked about my speed a few times. I have just been driving by feel and sound, letting the car tell me where it is comfortable. So, I took along a GPS on my next drive. My speed averages about 30 MPH, give or take a couple. A little bit faster on the highway. My front end is pretty loose, so anything above 35 MPH, it shakes and rattles pretty bad. I am in the process of rebuilding another front axle to put in it. Then I think that 40 MPH might be possible on the highway?

Re: Today's Social Distancing Video
Thanks, Are the videos played in real time? Seems faster than ~30 mph. Of course I haven't driven anything is 2 weeks so my perspective may need recalibrating. Take care, jb

Re: Today's Social Distancing Video
Yes, it is real time video. I do agree it appears faster than 30 MPH. I have been using Linear field of view. I did one of the earlier videos on Wide Angle. It was video #2 from 4/2. In that one you can see the sun visor and part of the dash. I was also holding the camera after it fell of the windshield.
Here is episode #9.
Enjoy!

Re: Today's Social Distancing Video
Scott,
I have been watching and listening to your video's. You mentioned that your front end needs some work, but I have noticed every time you come upon a round red sign your car only slows down enough to wave. That tells me your front is working well. However, you might want to check your back wheels and your brakes. I have yet to see your car stop for ice cream!

#9 is a turn south on CR 650 W, then west on Division Road. The first mile runs 2:28. If my arithmetic is right, that's an average of about 24 mph.

Re: Today's Social Distancing Video
That would be assuming that all of the roads are intersecting at 1 mile increments? That could be shorter, or longer, depending on all of the curves in all of the roads? I think you are pretty close. I do wonder if the focus setting of the lens makes it appear faster. There are 3 options, Linear, Wide Angle and Super View. These are filmed in Linear and might be tilted slightly down focusing more on the front of the car and the road, and not on the surroundings? I may do a little experimenting on that?

Re: Today's Social Distancing Video
I noticed that the first video has over 1000 views!! Oddly, the rest not many? It was done with my cell phone, held by hand while driving, not very good footage. I wonder if people are not scrolling down to find the other videos? Another thing that I am wondering is, since my mount vibrates a good bit and with the digital image stabilization in the camera, if it is cutting out frames thus causing it appear faster than real time?
Any now, for your entertainment, here is a little intermission video while I prepare the next "social distancing" video. In this upcoming video, we will cover some new territory!

Re: Today's Social Distancing Video
That is a neat trick you got there Scott. I thought you were using a GoPro for all these videos. Now you admit that you were driving with only one hand. That is not easy to do and still keep the picture steady even with image stabilization. Even harder when you are facing reverse. I hope you are able to get out tomorrow. Suppose to be a nice day - no snow.

Re: Today's Social Distancing Video
The first 2 videos were done on my iPhone. The iPhone records at 1080P 30. The third video started of with the GoPro set to 1080P 60 and mounted to the windshield set on wide angle. It fell off right at the start of the drive. So, I held it by hand for that video. By the fourth video, I had the mount holding on pretty good and changed the setting to linear. I am working on last Sundays drive now. I have about 1 hour of footage. I have to keep the time frame down to 5-7 minutes in order to be able to upload them to YouTube, in a reasonable amount of time. I did figure out that you have to click on the little gear at the bottom of the screen on YouTube to get the videos to play in 1080P.
The weather has been cold, windy and rainy here this week. Hopefully that is over and it should start warming back up this weekend. If it does, then I can get out on the road again.

It was very windy today and I forgot to hold the phone horizontally. Looks OK on phone, but I have blinders on when shown here. It is about 4 minutes long and there is a surprise at the end, about 3:35 mark.

Re: Today's Social Distancing Video
I did get the coupe out today for a short drive, but, no video to report. I did take the GoPro along and do some testing. I set it on Wide Angle then Super View and then Linear. I drove the same route each time. Then put them on the computer and edited them into one video to compare the results. The Linear setting appears to show the best picture. On Wide Angle and Super View you get a wider view, but the further from center you look, the more distortion you see. For example, the utility poles look bent instead of straight as you go by and the sun visor appears curved instaed of straight. I also tried 120FPS instead of 60FPS to see if it would appear slower. The result was that the speed still appeared fast and you saw more vibration, plus, the file size was twice as large. So my test results show that of these settings that 1080P 60FPS, is probably the best for the type of filming that I am doing. I may try dropping to 30FPS and see how that works. That would reduce the file size by 50% plus, match the iPhone settings for editing purposes, but it might reduce the quality?

Re: Today's Social Distancing Video
The yard art is Paul Wilcox in Germantown. I was driving about 25mph. Based on what I see in my video vs what I see in your video's the speed is correct. I do not think your camera is dropping enough frames to make a difference. That is just what it looks like when it is recorded. I was hoping the trains were running at the engineering society down the road, but there was no one there. I think their track is 7 1/2 inch. They always offer me a ride when I stop by.

Re: Today's Social Distancing Video
Standard speed in silent movies was 16 fps. When talkies came in and a photo sound track was added along the edge of the film, the standard was 24 fps for better sound fidelity. (That's why silent movies look fast on a sound projector.) I expect you won't be able to see any difference between 30 fps and higher speeds.
The new Part 1 was a little tricky with the editing, but it's south on County Line/1000 W, West on Ingersoll, south on CR 850 E/Crooked Road across IN 32, and west on CR 700 S. At least that's what Google says. Their names for things don't always match what's on the ground.

Re: Today's Social Distancing Video
I did another test today at 30FPS and you are correct, I can not see a difference. However, the file size of a 5 minute video at 60FPS and 30FPS are both 1.58 GB. So, I see no savings of upload time between the two? I did find an adjustment for speed in the video editor. When I slowed the speed down to .8, it did look more realistic, however the sound was not right? So, for now, I will continue as is. Maybe I just need to drive a little bit slower?
For the next ride, I skipped the roads that we have been down a few times, but left bread crumbs, just for you Steve, so that you could track our route!

This ride starts at the curve from CR 700 S onto CR 800 W, past Sugar Mill Lake to CR 800 S, and east to Mountain/County Line Road. Going by the satellite view and the scale, I get an average speed of 24 mph. Why not 30? Because of slowing down for turns.

Yes, the rear wheels are the one that I bought from you. I replaced that welded hub and both brake drums. I put new bearings and races in the front wheels and will install them along with the front axle that I bought from you, once I finish the rebuild. I have the king pin holes all done with Stevens bushings, the spindle bushings and king pins fit. I have replaced and fit the perch bushings to new shackles. I installed new bushings in the steering arms. I am waiting on the steel that I ordered to make gage rods for checking and straightening the front axle . Then I will go through the tie rod and drag link. It will all be good as new when finished.
